August's half-percentage point drop to 5.3% came as the rates for whites, Hispanics and Asian Americans all rose. The overall U.S. jobless rate rose to 3.8% from 3.5%, but that was the result of growth in the workforce. The unemployment rate gap between Black and white Americans fell back to 1.9 percentage points, just 0.3 percentage points shy of the record 1.6-point gap in April.

The National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition released a new list of Indigenous boarding schools Wednesday that surpasses the number of previously reported institutions. The list of Indigenous boarding schools in the United States includes many that have closed and some that are still in operation today. It found the federal government ran or supported 408 boarding schools that forced assimilation between 1819 and 1969. The list also includes 125 schools that are currently open and that were or are considered Indigenous boarding schools. The legislation provided religious organizations with the resources to run more than a hundred schools for Native American children.

"It seems like they do a lot to try to make it seem like they are the party for young Black men or Black men as a whole, but they don't back it with anything. The vast majority of Black voters, including men, are still expected to choose Biden over a Republican. Black men and women under the age of 50 voted Republican in similar numbers, the poll showed. The poll found that 74% of Black Americans favor reparations compared to just 26% of white Americans. A divided America Views on whether the U.S. government should provide some form of reparations for slavery and its legacy are split along party and racial lines. They also say it’s wrong to have taxpayers finance reparations, given that no one alive today is responsible for slavery. In April 2021, Gohmert went on the attack by proposing an amendment calling for the Democratic Party to pay for reparations. In the slavery era, the Democratic Party supported slavery; the Republican Party, led by Abraham Lincoln, called for slavery’s restriction and eventually abolished it.

Although white people enslaved Black people in Northern states in early America, by the eve of the Civil War, slavery was almost entirely a Southern enterprise. South Carolina, where the Civil War began, illustrates the familial ties between lawmakers and the nation’s history of slavery. Each of the seven white lawmakers who served in the 117th Congress is a direct descendant of a slaveholder, Reuters found. In researching America’s political elite, Reuters found names – almost always just a first name – of 712 people enslaved by the ancestors of the political elite.
