CHICAGO (AP) — Former Northwestern University football coach Pat Fitzgerald is suing the school for $130 million, saying his alma mater wrongfully fired him in the wake of a hazing and abuse scandal that has engulfed the athletic department. The $130 million includes $68 million remaining in owed salary plus $62 million in future lost income, Webb added. “If there was ever a coach at Northwestern University who should have not been terminated, it’s Coach Fitzgerald," Webb said. Missouri and Texas A&M were the first teams to join the SEC in 20 years. Financial benefits and concerns about conference stability lured Boston College to become the A.C.C.’s 12th member in 2005. Penn State, one of the last major programs to remain independent, became the Big Ten’s 11th member in 1993, setting off a wave of realignment across college football. The Missouri Valley Conference stopped sponsoring football after the 1985 season. But further scrutiny revealed distinctive features: legs slightly longer than those of most domestic cats, and a striking black-tipped tail. I explored this question in my book "The Cat's Meow: How Cats Evolved from the Savanna to Your Sofa." But tomb paintings and sculptures show that by 3,500 years ago, domestic cats lived in Egypt. Or you can measure the length of its intestines – longer in domestic cats to digest vegetable-based food provided by or scavenged from humans. The common view that domestic cats are aloof loners couldn't be further from the truth.

CNN —The student newspaper for Northwestern University said at least three former students of its football program detailed what it described as a pattern of racism from coaches and players. “I didn’t feel like I could be anything other than White,” former player Ramon Diaz Jr. said, according to the paper. Northwestern University on Monday fired Pat Fitzgerald, its longtime head football coach, after an investigation found that his players had participated in widespread hazing, including forced nudity and sexualized acts. His firing came three days after the university said that Fitzgerald, who had been head coach of the Wildcats since 2006, would be suspended for two weeks without pay after the investigation found the hazing allegations to be credible. Michael Schill, the president of Northwestern, said in a statement that the decision to fire Fitzgerald, 48, came “after a difficult and complex evaluation” of his earlier discipline and after discussions with the board of trustees, students, alumni and Fitzgerald. “The decision to originally suspend Coach Fitzgerald was mine and mine alone, as is the decision to part ways with him,” Schill said.

Hong Kong CNN —It’s dusk in Hong Kong Park. On a sweltering summer day in Hong Kong Park, nestled between skyscrapers in the urban center of the Asian metropolis, a yellow-crested cockatoo perches on a branch. Noemi Cassanelli/CNN Yellow-crested cockatoos nest in old trees, typically more than 100 years old, which form cavities in the trunk. Hong Kong, despite its urban sprawl and concrete veneer, is a stronghold for several endangered species, including Chinese pangolins, Hong Kong groupers, and the black-faced spoonbill. (According to the AFCD, it has “not received any report related to poaching of yellow-crested cockatoos in the past three years.”)Extremely picky about where they roost, the yellow-crested cockatoos use cavities that form in the trunks of trees that are typically older than 100 years.

The cats were bred and released by Saving Wildcats, a European project led by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) in partnership with a group of conservation and governmental organizations. “It’s a really exciting milestone,” says Dr. Helen Senn, project lead for Saving Wildcats and head of conservation and science programs at RZSS. Saving Wildcats has taken every effort to ensure the captive-bred cats will have the instincts and hunting skills needed for survival in the wild. Saving Wildcats hopes to keep breeding and releasing around 20 kittens annually over the next few years to give the wild population the best chance of getting established. Wildcats could be drivers for healthier ecosystems because creating better habitat for them will benefit many other species, says Senn.

These adorable sand cats could be under threat

The sand cat has been observed hunting the venomous Saharan horned viper, pictured here buried in the sand. This elusive nature is no doubt one of the reasons sand cats have been so under-reported, says Breton. The report notes that sand cats appear to travel greater distances than any other cat of their size, including black-footed cats and African wildcats. Sand cats in dangerThe report’s findings could have serious implications for the sand cat’s conservation status. There are also local threats from shepherd dogs that sometimes kill sand cats; domestic cats carrying diseases that are dangerous for the wild species; and there have also been cases of sand cats being captured for the illegal pet trade, he adds.
For John Calipari, recruiting season doubles as reunion season. The Kentucky men’s basketball head coach has been on the road lately, telling some of the country’s tallest and most dexterous teenagers about the charms of Lexington—a job that lands him in some useful ZIP Codes, during an NBA postseason well-stocked with former Wildcats. Calipari recently touched down in Philadelphia, where he saw Tyrese Maxey, his one-time point guard, score 33 points in a Game 2 win in the 76ers’ first-round series against the Brooklyn Nets. He has designs to get to Phoenix and Los Angeles, where he hopes to catch Devin Booker and Anthony Davis, whose Suns and Lakers hold leads in their own playoff openers.
