“Once prey is within view, the Drop Bear will drop as much as eight meters to pounce on top of the unsuspecting victim. When CNN Travel asked Australian film star Chris Hemsworth for advice on avoiding drop bears in 2018, he said: “Bring an umbrella.”The origins of the drop bearDespite the drop bear’s popularity and growing international reputation, its actual origins are unknown. Not every Australian grew up with stories of drop bears, but those who do remember being told about drop bears by their parents, especially people who grew up in the country or in farming communities. The Drop BearsThere is, however, one clear marker of when the mythical drop bears began to enter Australian pop culture. Tell them you’ve got to be wary or (the drop bears) will drop down and take you,” Batchelor said.

Large portions of England and Wales braced for considerable heat on Tuesday, with government officials issuing an alert for vulnerable people and meteorologists warning it would be hottest day of the year so far. The heat in Britain may also stir up sweaty memories of a string of brutally hot days across the country in July 2022, when schools, doctors’ offices and museums shut their doors while the government urged people to work from home. In Britain, few people have air conditioning at home, and much of the country’s housing stock was built to retain heat. Transport delays in very hot or very cold weather are not uncommon. “Much of the U.K. is entering a warm or even hot interlude of weather, with some places in England and Wales likely to meet heat-wave criteria in the coming days,” Frank Saunders, the chief meteorologist at the Met Office, Britain’s national weather service, said in a news release on Tuesday.

UK: Assisted dying bill introduced in House of Lords
  + stars: | 2024-07-26 | by ( Rob Picheta | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
London CNN —An emotional, accelerating campaign to allow assisted dying for terminally ill adults in Britain has reached parliament, with activists hoping the country will become one of few to legalize the process. Opponents of legalization have argued that those small figures represent a limited appetite for assisted dying in the UK, but there are other pressures at play too. But some among the country’s lawmakers, who will ultimately decide the fate of the assisted dying law, say there is more to consider. For Starmer, the assisted dying bill has the potential to disrupt those intentions. But legalizing assisted dying wasn’t in Labour’s manifesto or in its King’s Speech, limiting the opportunities for it to ever reach MPs.

Giant pink man causes stir in small Welsh town

CNN —A large, pink, inflatable man, created by the Chinese contemporary artist Yue Minjun, has divided opinion in a small town in Wales. “The image represents the boredom of Chinese society during the rise of consumerism and economic reform in the early 1990s,” the centuries-old Ruthin School said in a post on Facebook. Yue’s work, in particular his many grinning self-portraits, have become among the most recognizable pieces of Chinese contemporary art. She said the school’s students “love it” are “really quite fond” of the large inflatable man. Another local resident told CNN the inflatable is “a bit odd for an art installation,” while a local barber aid opinions differed, explaining that he had heard both positive and negative reaction.

And, fittingly, in the first full year of his reign, the British monarchy introduced a slew of measures to tackle its rising carbon emissions. The King’s two Bentleys will also be modified within the next year to run on biofuel, according to Britain’s PA Media. The Royal Household aims to transition to an “almost fully electric” fleet of vehicles eventually, the accounts said, without providing a target date. Whether biofuels used for vehicles reduce carbon emissions is contentious and depends on many factors, including their source. Crown Estate profits soared in the 2023-24 financial year to a record £1.1 billion ($1.4 billion), boosted by revenue from offshore wind projects.

Vaughan Gething, the first minister of Wales, announced his resignation on Tuesday after less than four months in the region’s top job, amid a controversy over campaign donations that prompted a vote of no confidence in his leadership. Mr. Gething, a Labour Party politician who became the first Black person to lead a national government in Europe when he became the head of the Welsh Parliament, known as the Senedd, in March, denied any wrongdoing as he announced in a written statement that he was stepping down. “A growing assertion that some kind of wrongdoing has taken place has been pernicious, politically motivated and patently untrue,” Mr. Gething wrote, adding that in his 11 years as a lawmaker, he had “never ever made a decision for personal gain.”Wales, like Scotland and Northern Ireland, is part of the United Kingdom but also has its own devolved government, which makes local laws and enacts national legislation and policies. Mr. Gething became the first minister after the resignation of a long-serving predecessor, Mark Drakeford, winning a tight leadership election within the governing Labour Party.

Craig Wright, self-declared inventor of Bitcoin, arrives at federal court in West Palm Beach, Florida, U.S., on Friday, June 28, 2019. LONDON — Craig Wright, an Australian man who claimed to be the inventor of bitcoin , was on Tuesday referred to British prosecutors for committing alleged perjury. On Tuesday, British High Court Judge James Mellor decided to refer a case against Wright's claim to be the inventor of bitcoin to the Crown Prosecution Service — which is the organization that prosecutes criminal cases investigated by the police in England and Wales. The CPS will now consider whether Wright should be prosecuted for what Mellor called "wholescale perjury and forgery of documents," and decide on whether a warrant for arrest and possible extradition is needed. Wright has remained mostly silent since a High Court ruling was issued claiming that he had lied "extensively and repeatedly" in his evidence attempting to prove the case that he was bitcoin's inventor, Satoshi Nakamoto.

First Minister of Wales Vaughan Gething gives a speech during King Charles III and Queen Camilla visit to the Senedd in Cardiff, to mark its 25th anniversary on July 11, 2024 in Cardiff, Wales. Vaughan Gething said on Tuesday he would step down as first minister of Wales, after four ministers resigned from the devolved Welsh government in protest over his leadership. "Having been elected as leader of my party in March, I had hoped that over the summer a period of reflection, rebuilding and renewal could take place under my leadership," Gething said in a statement. Four Welsh ministers - Counsel General Mick Antoniw, housing minister Julie James, economy and energy secretary Jeremy Miles and culture minister Lesley Griffiths resigned earlier in the day. Gething has been criticized over the source of a political donation, the transparency of his disclosures to the COVID-19 inquiry from his time as health minister, and his decision to dismiss a minister after accusing her of leaking to the media.

The paintings had been at the center of a gender battle that broke out after a man from the Australian state of New South Wales took legal action against the gallery after being refused entry to the museum's "Ladies Lounge" exhibition. The exhibition contained some of the museum's most notable artworks, including some said to have been produced by the Spanish Cubist Pablo Picasso. "I knew of a number of Picasso paintings I could borrow from friends, but none of them were green and I wished for the Lounge to be monochrome.
