He can be certain of one thing, however: many patients he meets will be suffering from high blood pressure after living for months under Russian occupation near the frontlines. "Patients who we chat to say there was a considerable number of deaths because of the lack of medical help." The World Health Organization estimates that the overall damage to the system could cost more than $15 billion to repair. For months, he said, he lived in a metro station and worked as a volunteer distributing food in the subway. One visitor to the cafe, Anna Tovstopyatova, said she had come to make a donation. Kharkiv held off Russian forces and Ukrainian forces then pushed Russian troops back towards the border.

Kyiv has ruled out any peace talks with Moscow until Russian troops leave all occupied territories, including Crimea. As part of the plan, he also called for dismantling a 19-kilometer (12-mile) bridge that Russia built to Crimea. Moscow blamed Ukrainian military intelligence for the attack. Russia's latest rocket and artillery attacks killed 4 civilians and wounded 15 others since Saturday, according to the Ukrainian military. Ukrainian Sports Minister Vadym Huttsait said the death toll included 262 Ukrainian athletes, reaffirming Kyiv's call to bar Russia from the Olympics.

The 'Art Weapon' event - which opened at Berlin's sprawling Alte Muenze complex on Saturday - also featured live painting by Ukrainian artists, Ukrainian-language theatre and the chance to sit for a Ukrainian tattoo artist. He decided to apply for funding through a German organisation supporting cultural initiatives, allowing him to organise "Art Weapon" in Berlin. "The invasion has definitely changed art in Ukraine," he added.

KHARKIV, Ukraine, Feb 22 (Reuters) - For months, Natalia Honcharenko had clung to the hope that her son, a Ukrainian soldier who helped defend the Mariupol steelworks against relentless Russian attack, might still be alive. But DNA tests proved that the remains of a body brought back to Ukraine in September as part of a POW exchange were his. And on a cold late January day, Natalia finally laid him to rest, among a sea of Ukrainian flags set on hundreds of other graves of fallen Kharkiv soldiers. "Despite everything, we expect a possible Russian offensive in February. This is only from the point of view of symbolism; it's not logical from a military view. REUTERS/Vitalii HnidyiJan 29 (Reuters) - A missile hit an apartment building on Sunday in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, killing one person, injuring at least three and causing widespread damage, regional governor Oleh Synehubov said. A Reuters picture from the scene showed fire engulfing part of a residential building in the country's second most-populous city. Synehubov said the strike took place in the city's central Kyiv district. Anatoly Torianyk, deputy head of Kharkiv rescue services, said the building was made of wood.
REUTERS/Vitalii HnidyiHONTARIVKA, Ukraine, Jan 24 (Reuters) - At the only place in their village where they could find a strong mobile internet signal - a windswept hill on the barren steppe - Ukrainian fifth-grader Mykola Dziuba and his friends have built makeshift tent to serve as a remote classroom. "We sit here for around two or three hours, sometimes just for an hour," said Dziuba as the wind rattled the rickety structure. He said they collected the materials - plastic sheeting, wooden poles, bricks and sand - from around their homes. In the shadow of a water tower on a low hill they discovered the mobile coverage was good enough for a stable internet connection. Repeated Russian missile strikes on critical infrastructure since last October have also plunged large parts of the country into periodic power outages.
Earlier this month, France said it would send AMX-10 RC armored combat vehicles to Ukraine, designated “light tanks” in French. Sunak’s announcement came as Russian forces fired missiles at Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine on Saturday in the first major barrage in days. In the northeastern Kharkiv region, Gov. On Saturday morning, two Russian missiles hit Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. But that cuts both ways, as Ukraine says its fierce defense of the eastern strongholds has helped tie up Russian forces.

The Kremlin and Russia's defence ministry did not immediately respond to questions about Serdiuk's account or that of others Reuters spoke to in Kherson. 'PURE SADISM'Grim recollections of life under occupation in Kherson have followed the unbridled joy and relief when Ukrainian soldiers retook the city on Friday after Russian troops withdrew across the Dnipro River. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said two days later that investigators had uncovered more than 400 Russian war crimes and found the bodies of both servicemen and civilians in areas of Kherson region freed from Russian occupation. Vitaliy had been an underground resistance fighter since Russian troops seized Kherson on March 2, according to Lapchuk, and she became worried when he did not answer her phone calls. The soldiers, who identified themselves as Russian troops, threatened to smash out her teeth when she tried to berate them.

The most severe fighting in eastern Ukraine was taking place near Avdiivka, outside Donetsk, and Bakhmut, Zelenskyy said. Russian forces have repeatedly tried to seize Bakhmut, which sits on a main road leading to the Ukrainian-held cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. Efrem Lukatsky / APThe looming battle for Kherson city at the mouth of the Dnipro River will determine whether Ukraine can loosen Russia’s grip on the south. Radio intercepts indicated freshly mobilized recruits had been sent to the front and Russian forces were firmly dug in. Ukrainian forces advanced along the Dnipro in a dramatic push in the south at the start of this month, but progress appears to have slowed.
Kherson's capture could leave thousands of Russian troops trapped on the Dnipro's western bank unable to cross easily to the east. Expectations rose last week that Russian forces were girding to relinquish Kherson, when Moscow-appointed occupation authorities began evacuating tens of thousands of residents by ferries to the Dnipro's east bank. Kherson is the only regional capital Russian forces have taken in the "special military operation" Putin launched in February. But the commander of the Ukrainian unit visited by Reuters on Wednesday saw no sign of Russians leaving. Rusting hulks of Russian armored vehicles marked confrontations with Ukrainian troops who advanced last month some 20 km (12.4 miles) in two days to their current lines.

Local people fill up bottles with fresh drinking water, as the main supply pipeline for drinking water for the city was damaged in Kherson region at the beginning of Russia's attack on Ukraine, in Mykolaiv, Ukraine October 16, 2022. The attacks have disrupted electricity across large parts of Ukraine, killing dozens of people and leaving other places without access to clean water. "Ukraine's water infrastructure, from dams to water treatment and wastewater systems, has been extensively targeted by Russia," Gleick wrote in an email. After nearly a month without water, city officials were forced to begin pumping yellowish, salty water from the Southern Buh River estuary to clear sewers and let residents flush toilets and wash. Bottles of water are available in stores, but many residents, impoverished by war, depend on bottled water donations from abroad, even as pools of water snake onto streets from leaking mains.
Firefighters help a local woman evacuate from a residential building destroyed by a Russian drone strike, which local authorities consider to be Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) Shahed-136, amid Russia's attack on Ukraine, in Kyiv, Ukraine October 17, 2022. 'SUICIDE DRONES'Ukraine said the attacks were carried out by Iran-made "suicide drones", which fly to their target and detonate. The White House accused Iran of lying when it says Iranian drones were not being used by Russia in Ukraine. Ukraine's military said it had destroyed 37 Russian drones since Sunday evening, or around 85% of those used in attacks. Yeysk is separated from occupied Russian territory in southern Ukraine by a narrow stretch of the Sea of Azov.
The central Shevchenkivskyi district of Ukraine's capital was rocked by blasts early on Monday for the second time in a week, with Mayor Vitalii Klitshchko saying several residential buildings were damaged. "Rescuers are on the site," Klitshchko said on the Telegram messaging service, adding that as a result of what he said was a drone attack, a fire also broke out in a non-residential building. Shevchenkivskiy district, a busy hub with universities, student bars and restaurants, was hit by several explosions on Monday last week when Russia ordered the biggest aerial offensive against Ukrainian cities in retaliation for a blast on a bridge linking mainland Russia to Crimea. Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian president's staff, said the attacks were carried out with so-called suicide drones. "Russians think this will help them, but such actions are just their convulsions," Yermak said on the Telegram messaging app.

They shattered months of relative calm in Kyiv and other areas far from the front lines. Across the country, at least 11 people were dead and 64 injured, according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. A number of blasts were heard in the center of Kyiv early Monday by NBC News. He later said that some of the city’s critical infrastructure was hit and that the the threat of new strikes remained. Kyiv's authorities also warned of possible power and water supply interruptions, and urged people to charge their phones and stock up on water.
