A THUNDERSTORM spoiled my plan to head straight for the beach after dropping my bags in my room at the Lodge at Gulf State Park. Instead, I grabbed a book and sat alongside other hotel guests on a porch facing the Gulf of Mexico. Soon I was paying more attention to the slow-moving, violet clouds than my reading. When rain blew on us, we scooted back our rocking chairs and enjoyed the show.

U.S., Dutch set to hit China's chipmakers with one-two punch

Japan, home to chip equipment makers Nikon and Tokyo Electron , has since adopted rules to restrict exports of 23 types of semiconductor manufacturing equipment that will take effect July 23. ASML said in March it expects the Dutch regulations to affect its TWINSCAN NXT:2000i and more sophisticated models. But the company's older DUV models, like one called the TWINSCAN NXT:1980Di, could also be kept from about six Chinese facilities by the U.S. The new Dutch regulations will not take effect immediately, sources said, with one person expecting the effective date to be September, two months after publication. ASML is Europe's largest chip equipment company due to its dominance in lithography, one of the central steps in the computer chip making process.

The secret queer history of flowers
  + stars: | 2023-06-25 | by ( Aj Willingham | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
Many of these flowers have deep connections to queer icons or are echoed in other queer symbols. (Even more complex emotions like, say, bashfulness, were associated with their own flowers, which surely wasn’t confusing at all.) It makes sense, then, that queer communities would find both beauty and belonging by continuing this interesting tradition. Today, the lavender flower still appears in newer symbols of queerness. The Japanese word for rose is pronounced “bara,” and experienced a resurgence in queer media in the 1960s and 1970s.

The recent flight of Chinese spy balloon over the US highlighted a new kind of overhead snooper. These "pseudo-satellites" fly lower than satellites but higher than most planes and are hard to spot. Camera-equipped reconnaissance planes proved crucial in World Wars I and II, followed by the ever-watchful spy satellites of the Cold War. High-altitude platforms fly above bad weather but have a limited payload, while lower-altitude platforms can carry more sensors but are hampered by weather effects.

LUCKY DOGS, by Helen SchulmanThat Harvey Weinstein hired a private international spy agency called Black Cube to help squash stories about his sex crimes always seemed stranger than fiction. In an author’s note, Helen Schulman states explicitly that her seventh novel, “Lucky Dogs,” was inspired by two players in this globe-spanning chapter of the Weinstein saga. “How could one woman do this to another woman?” Schulman had wondered, reading ragefully about the case. The question might sound naïve: Has she not seen the foundational Hollywood text “All About Eve”? But her imagined answer, in the form of this book, is deeply knowing, properly indignant and — maybe the best revenge — very funny.

“But Here We Are” has a back-to-basics immediacy and intensity that was missing from the last few Foo Fighters albums. (As a companion piece, they also released a cheeky collection of Bee Gees covers.) The undercurrent holding all of “But Here We Are” together is not an idea so much as raw emotion. Grohl’s melodies are as soaring and anthemic as they’ve sounded in years; his vocals are freshly impassioned and heartfelt. The towering title track layers intricate guitar work atop skittering percussion before a chorus comes along and sweeps everything into a tidal wave of sound.

CNN —Translucent, fragile marine creatures that drift through the sea are riding the motion of the ocean to a destination that’s infamous as a home for trash: the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. A surprising number of delicate, floating invertebrates, called neustons, are making the Great Pacific Garbage Patch home, according to data from a new study. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch and the Sargasso Sea are both oceanic gyres — marine zones where multiple ocean currents converge to form a vortex (though the Sargasso Sea is known for its floating algae rather than drifting garbage). There are five main oceanic gyres, and the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre is where the best-known garbage patch lies. But when long-distance swimmer and environmental activist Benoît Lecomte swam through the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in 2019, he and his crew gathered data on floating life as well as drifting litter.

IT WAS BOUND to happen at some point. Along with low-rise jeans, the recent Y2K-style renaissance has resurrected going-out tops. If you’re over 30, you no doubt remember them—those sexy, strappy, sometimes bedazzled and always bordering-on-bad-taste camisoles that Paris Hilton and her ilk wore while cavorting at night clubs. Now they’ve reappeared, most notably at Celine’s recent Los Angeles show (in shimmering gold) and on Versace’s spring runway (in sheer, beaded violet). But as Gen Z and the TikTok set embrace this dubious early-2000s look, women who wore it the first time are wondering what to sport for a stylish night out that doesn’t channel Tara Reid circa 2003.
Claire Ptak first learned about Meghan Markle through Ms. Markle’s former lifestyle blog, The Tig, a so-called hub for the discerning palette that she started in 2014. After Ms. Ptak, the owner of Violet, a cafe and bakery in London, published “The Violet Bakery Cookbook” in 2015, she sent a copy to Ms. Markle, who later asked to interview her. “Great questions,” Ms. Ptak, 48, said of that conversation. Ms. Ptak had by then been living in London for about a decade. Last year, Ms. Ptak made a version of the cake for a birthday party for the couple’s daughter, Princess Lilibet Diana.

Why sex workers are protesting in Amsterdam

The reduced hours come amid an ongoing campaign by the city council to move sex workers into an “erotic center” outside the heart of the city. She also spoke about welfare concerns for all sex workers, explaining how it could impact their ability to get home safely. A protest organized by sex workers interrupted a city council meeting on Thursday that was discussing location options for the proposed erotic center. Sex workers disagree, with Red Light United arguing that the erotic center could create an environment for more crime and “shady” behavior.
