BRUSSELS, Jan 9 (Reuters) - EU antitrust regulators will decide by Feb. 13 whether to clear U.S. company Viasat's (VSAT.O) $7.3 billion takeover of satellite rival Inmarsat, a European Commission filing showed on Monday. The EU antitrust enforcer can either clear the deal with or without remedies or it can open a full-scale investigation if it has serious concerns about the tie-up. The companies compete with market leaders Panasonic (6752.T) and Intelsat in the market for in-flight Wi-Fi on long-haul flights. Viasat offers connectivity services to residential, aviation and defence customers in North America while Inmarsat's clients include the shipping and aviation sectors as well as government departments. Delta plans to offer free Wi-Fi starting Feb. 1

Delta Air Lines will offer travelers free Wi-Fi starting Feb. 1, after years of studying the possibility. Travelers will access the free internet service by logging in with their Delta SkyMiles frequent flyer account information, Bastian added. It's free on JetBlue , which has some corporate sponsorships for the service, and Hawaiian Airlines is planning to offer free internet with SpaceX's Starlink this year. American Airlines ' Wi-Fi service starts at $10 and varies depending on the route, though last April, the carrier and its provider Viasat, started trialing free Wi-Fi for some customers. Airline executives have been hesitant to offer free Wi-Fi service until it is more reliable.
Delta Air Lines will be the first US global carrier to offer free Wi-Fi on most domestic mainline flights. JetBlue Airways, which is considered a low-cost airline, already offers free Wi-Fi on all of its planes. As of now, only Delta-operated aircraft will offer free Wi-Fi — this does not apply to its codeshare or regional partners. The new offering is in partnership with T-Mobile, which already offers free internet onboard many Delta flights to users of its cellular network. Delta, which has been regularly praised for its on-time performance, safety record, and cabin products, is bringing more than just free Wi-Fi to its planes this year.
Dec 17 (Reuters) - L3Harris Technologies Inc (LHX.N) is nearing a $4.7 billion deal to acquire U.S. rocket maker Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings Inc (AJRD.N), 10 months after the latter's $4.4 billion sale to Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N) fell through, people familiar with the matter said on Saturday. L3Harris is a defense contractor that is mostly a competitor rather than a customer of Aerojet. Aerojet's solid fuel rocket motors and other propulsion systems would help L3Harris expand its space defense systems and precision munitions businesses. Spokespeople for Aerojet, L3Harris and General Electric did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Its customers include the Pentagon, Boeing (BA.N), Lockheed Martin and Raytheon Technologies Corp (RTX.N).
Thankfully, there are a few ways to get around those extra fees, with more airlines offering passengers access to free Wi-Fi than ever before. Hawaiian Airlines is also planning to launch free in-flight Wi-Fi in 2023 thanks to its partnership with SpaceX's SkyLink. American Airlines also seems to be testing out free Wi-Fi on many of its aircraft that are equipped with Viasat — as part of an ongoing trial, passengers who opt to watch a sponsored video can access 30 minutes of Wi-Fi free of charge. Some international carriers offer free Wi-Fi, but with certain stipulations. Then, choose the airline's Wi-Fi network and login on the Wi-Fi homepage using your T-Mobile or Sprint phone number.
The Federal Communications Commission issued a key authorization to Elon Musk's SpaceX on Thursday, granting approval for the company to move forward with launching up to 7,500 next-generation satellites in its Starlink internet network. "Our action will allow SpaceX to begin deployment of Gen 2 Starlink," the FCC wrote in the order. The FCC did not grant SpaceX's full application, which included deployment of nearly 30,000 satellites in low Earth orbit, and it placed some conditions on the company's plan to deploy the satellites. The FCC imposed a limit on the number of satellites in SpaceX's second-generation of the Starlink constellation, also known as Gen2, in order "to address concerns about orbital debris and space safety." To date SpaceX has launched about 3,500 first-generation Starlink satellites into orbit.

California’s Viasat and British company Inmarsat are about to launch new large satellites. For stock investors, a new risk is orbiting the satellite market: By trying to preserve competition, antitrust regulators could end up placing even more power in the hands of a privately-owned behemoth—Elon Musk‘s Starlink. On Monday, British satellite telecommunications company Inmarsat reported that earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or Ebitda, grew 17% in the third quarter relative to the same period of 2021. Between January and September, the free-cash flow margin was a fat 22%.

At Viasat, Biden said the government's latest jobs report showing the U.S. economy added 261,000 jobs last month was a sign of progress. "Folks, our economy continues to grow and add jobs even as gasoline prices continue to come down," he said. The party in the White House historically loses control of Congress during the first half of a new president's term. I feel really good about our chances," he said, adding Democrats have a good chance of winning the House of Representatives. Biden has also warned of what Democrats say are the dangers that Republicans backed by former President Donald Trump pose to U.S. democracy.
Biden to tout semiconductor bill with Democratic congressman in tight California racePresident Joe Biden on Friday is set to tour a southern California communications company that is expected to benefit from his legislative push to bolster American semiconductor manufacturing — and he’s taking a vulnerable Democratic congressman with him. Biden will be joined by Rep. Mike Levin for the visit to Carlsbad-headquartered Viasat as he looks to highlight the CHIPS and Science Act, a $280 billion legislative package, ahead of Tuesday’s midterm elections. The bill is one of the Biden administration’s most significant legislative achievements. Levin, a two-term congressman representing a San Diego-area district that was once a GOP stronghold, is locked in a tight race with former San Juan Capistrano Mayor Brian Maryott. Biden headlined a rally Thursday night in Oceanside, California, for Levin.
Biden will laud "the resurgence of American manufacturing" enabled by passage of three key pieces of his signature legislation - the Chips and Science Act, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and the Inflation Reduction Act, the White House said in a preview of his visit. Holding onto the swing seat could help Democrats hang onto their slim lead in the House. On Friday, at Viasat's headquarters in Carlsbad, near San Diego, he will laud the company's hiring of more than 700 veterans - about 10% of its workforce - across the country, the White House said. Viasat is a Carlsbad-headquartered communications company that provides satellite and fixed and mobile broadband internet. WASHINGTON, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Elon Musk's SpaceX is expanding its satellite internet unit's foray into in-flight WiFi services with the rollout on Wednesday of Starlink Aviation, offering customers a $150,000 airplane antenna amid mounting competition for airborne connectivity. Starlink, SpaceX's growing network of thousands of internet satellites, will charge customers seeking broadband internet on private jets between $12,500 to $25,000 a month for the service, on top of a one-time $150,000 hardware cost, the company said on its website. Starlink Aviation will begin delivering terminals in mid-2023, it said on its website, with reservations requiring a $5,000 payment. OneWeb on Tuesday announced an agreement with in-flight broadband giant Panasonic Avionics, which offers service to some 70 airlines, to market and sell OneWeb's broadband service to airlines by mid-2023. SpaceX plans to offer Starlink internet connectivity to Hawaiian Airlines planes next year.
Starlink Aviation will be available next year for $12,500-$25,000 per month. Starlink Aviation promises to bring impressive speeds, up to 350 megabytes-per-second, to the skies starting in 2023. Starlink Aviation positions itself as a superior alternative to notoriously subpar in-flight internet. Today planes get internet service from cell towers they fly over or from satellite-based services like Viasat. Cruise giant Royal Caribbean in August tapped Starlink to add internet service to its fleet.
The U.K.'s competition regulator launched an in-depth probe into American satellite internet company Viasat's $7.3 billion deal to buy British rival Inmarsat. Specifically, the CMA is worried the deal would lead to higher prices for onboard Wi-Fi on plane flights. The watchdog has said Viasat and Inmarsat "compete closely in the aviation sector, particularly for the supply of onboard wifi for passenger use." The merger of Viasat and Inmarsat could therefore "lock in a large part of the customer base" before rival suppliers emerge. Combined, Intelsat and rival Panasonic represent more than 75% of the long-haul IFC market, the regulator stated.
UK regulator refers Viasat-Inmarsat merger for in-depth probe

LONDON, Oct 14 (Reuters) - Britain's competition regulator said on Friday that it had referred Viasat's (VSAT.O) $7.3 billion takeover of satellite rival Inmarsat for an in-depth investigation, raising chances of the deal getting delayed. The decision comes a week after the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) raised concerns that the merger between the American company and Britain-based Inmarsat could hamper competition and lead to airlines facing higher prices for on-board wifi. The watchdog said it referred the deal for further investigation because the merger has resulted or might be expected to result in a "substantial lessening of competition within a market or markets" in the UK, based on the information it currently has. Oct 3 (Reuters) - Defense contractor L3Harris Technologies (LHX.N) said on Monday it would buy satellite specialist Viasat Inc's (VSAT.O) military communication unit for about $1.96 billion to better align with U.S. defense spending priorities like cybersecurity and sensors. The government systems unit, known as Link 16 Tactical Data Links, includes 450 employees and has an annual sales of about $400 million. It enables secured sharing of voice and data and is integrated on military aircraft, ground vehicles, surface vessels and operating bases. With the deal, L3Harris aims to expand communication and networking capabilities to a larger user base. SpaceX hosted a demo of its Starlink satellite internet service on a JSX jet last week. The event was held on a JSX jet, a regional carrier that describes itself as a "hop-on jet service." Since SpaceX entered the satellite internet market it has been vying with more established providers, including Viasat and Intelsat. What's more, regulators have expressed doubt in SpaceX's satellite internet service. Last month, Royal Caribbean announced it had launched the satellite internet service across its fleet of ships.
