The controversial plan to regreen a desert

The Dutch engineer wants to transform a huge stretch of inhospitable desert into green, fertile land teeming with wildlife. “The only holistic way out of this situation is with large-scale ecological regeneration”So-called desert regreening projects are not new, and this is one of a number around the world seeking to transform arid landscapes. Costfoto/NurPhoto/Getty ImagesFor van der Hoeven, it was further proof his plan could work. “The scale reaches a level that helps prove that restoration can be done on a planetary scale.”It would add to other huge desert regreening projects also underway. The project was scheduled to kick off this December, but conflict has slowed everything down, van der Hoeven said.

Not everyone who attempts suicide has a mental health conditionOne of many common myths about suicide is that only people with mental health conditions have suicidal thoughts or attempt suicide. Describing a suicide attempt as “successful” is also problematic, as taking one’s life is not a positive achievement. “Failed suicide attempt” can suggest that surviving isn’t the best outcome or that there’s something lacking in the character or willpower of the attempter. Given these factors, when referring to suicide, appropriate language includes “died by suicide,” “fatal suicide attempt,” “killed herself” or “took his own life,” experts said. Acceptable shorthand ways to communicate not dying from an attempt include “nonfatal suicide attempt” or simply “suicide attempt.”Using more compassionate language to discuss suicide can also improve empathy and strategies for reducing suicide risk, experts said.

Trump's lawyers are expected to argue that, for decades, Grant somehow neglected to copyright the sound recording, or "master," for "Electric Avenue." Trump's lawyers acknowledge that Grant copyrighted the sheet music 40 years ago. Trump's side may argue that even Grant has tacitly acknowledged that the sound-recording copyright for "Electric Avenue" was never properly nailed down. Two weeks ago, on August 15, Grant applied to the US Copyright Office "for a sound-recording copyright registration of Electric Avenue," a court filing says. So it might surprise investors that the automaker believes its new path to profitability for electric vehicles will first be led by smaller, more affordable vehicles. “We’re quite convinced that the highest adoption rates for electric vehicles will be in the affordable segment on the lower size-end of the range,” he told CNBC on Thursday. Gjaja’s comments came a day after the automaker announced updates to its EV strategy that will cost up to $1.9 billion. Gjaja said the decision wasn’t taken lightly, especially the cancellation of the upcoming three-row vehicle, which Ford CEO Jim Farley and other executives had been touting as a game changer for several years. He said the Ford, in part, developed the skunkworks team to prove that Ford can compete against the Chinese automakers.

But the Llanez family never learned whether Gonzalez had followed ICE training protocols, because the way ICE agents are trained has been largely hidden from the public. For years, civil-rights groups have sought to obtain, with limited success, complete ICE training documents to understand how that training affects use of force by agents in the field. And they also appear to place an emphasis on teaching ICE agents how to justify the use of force. Among the most important lessons ICE agents receive is when and how to use deadly force. One of the questions asks which steps an officer must take before initiating deadly force; the answer is "None, deadly force can be initiated immediately."

DETROIT — The case against a man accused of killing of a Detroit synagogue leader collapsed Friday as a judge dismissed a remaining murder charge, three weeks after a jury cleared him of a similar but separate charge. Prosecutors acknowledged that the pending murder charge probably had to be dismissed, but it still was a blow in the highly publicized case. But it couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict on a separate charge of felony murder, which in Michigan is murder committed during another crime. The judge ruled out a second trial Friday, based on a 2009 U.S. Supreme Court decision involving partial jury verdicts. The U.S. is in what may end up being its biggest summer wave of Covid, with no end yet in sight. This year’s summer wave also began earlier than last year’s, Jha said. “Besides that, there’s not much that we can sort of put our finger on to say this is what’s driving this summer surge," Pekosz said. Jha said that what happens this winter is impossible to predict but that there could be a silver lining to a large summer wave. “A big summer wave tends to lead to a little bit of a smaller winter wave and vice versa, just because there’s a little bit more immunity in the population,” he said.
