Mr. Manchin has said he will not run for re-election to the Senate or for governor — a role he previously held for two terms — but rumors persist on Capitol Hill that he could change his mind. West Virginia’s deadline for independent candidates to declare their candidacies is not until Aug. 1. Since Mr. Manchin said he would not run again, Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York and the majority leader, has been pleading with him to formally leave the Democratic Party and seek re-election as an independent. If he did so, Mr. Manchin would face Jim Justice, a Democrat-turned-Republican second-term governor with whom he has a storied rivalry. Mr. Justice is popular in the state, and his decision to enter the Senate race was seen as a key factor in Mr. Manchin’s decision not to seek re-election.

Since May 2022, homeownership costs have grown twice as fast as incomes, putting the dream of owning property out of reach for many Americans. During that time, median mortgage payments rose from $2,319 to $2,835, per data provided by Redfin. To get a better sense of how rising prices have affected different markets, Redfin compared mortgage payments for 50 of the largest U.S. cities in May 2022 with May 2024. The city has a rich cultural history and is near Boston and New York, making it a popular market for second homes. Monthly payments increased in places like Ohio and Wisconsin, but are still well below the 2024 national median of $2,835.

When we don't get enough sleep, it can influence everything from how much money we make to our likelihood of developing dementia, heart disease, and diabetes. Researchers have found that stress is one of the strongest indicators of poor sleep. On top of that, the county struggles with poor health, another major contributor to poor sleep. In our analysis, we overlaid the CDC's sleep data with a CDC survey on mental health and found a 79% correlation between mental-health problems and poor sleep. In the food-services industry, people juggle inconsistent shifts and low pay that often requires taking on multiple jobs, and 40% of workers don't get enough sleep.

CNN —Chief Justice John Roberts on Thursday rejected a meeting request from Democratic lawmakers who wanted to discuss two provocative flags hoisted at Justice Samuel Alito’s properties. “Separation of powers concerns and the importance of preserving judicial independence counsel against such appearances,” Roberts wrote in a letter released by the Supreme Court. “My wife is fond of flying flags,” Alito wrote. The Supreme Court is considering two appeals tied to the 2020 election and the attack on the US Capitol. “I had nothing whatsoever to do with the flying of the flag,” Justice Alito wrote. “My wife and I own our Virginia home jointly,” the justice wrote. “She therefore has the legal right to use the property as she sees fit, and there were no additional steps that I could have taken to have the flag taken down more promptly." Justice Alito added that the “Appeal to Heaven” flag at his New Jersey beach house did not convey the meaning critics ascribed to it. “I was not aware of any connection between that historic flag and the ‘Stop the Steal Movement,’ and neither was my wife,” he wrote.

Dollar Tree announced Wednesday it acquired leases for 170 of 99 Cents Only’s stores out of bankruptcy in Arizona, California, Nevada and Texas. Dollar Tree was the last dollar store chain to sell everything for $1 before raising prices in 2021 to $1.25 and above. Family Dollar has underperformed Dollar Tree and other discount chains in recent years, and it’s closing 975 stores. One challenge for Dollar Tree could be the size of 99 Cents Only stores. 99 Cents Only stores are on average approximately 20,000 square feet, more than double the size of a typical dollar store chain.

Several stocks are well-positioned to benefit from any power supply bottlenecks resulting from rapid growth in data centers, according to 11 analysts at TD Cowen who compiled a 169-page report. As a result, they're building data centers where power is available, investing in transmission lines and exploring the use of nuclear energy . Brookfield Renewable Partners , an international renewable power producer and developer, is another beneficiary of the data center boom. "The recently signed framework agreement... is a clear example of BEP's exposure to corporate [power purchase agreement] momentum associated with data center demand. That will contribute to the energy supply needed to power data centers.

A second flagAlito's explanation for why his wife raised the upside-down flag in January 2021 also doesn't account for the second controversial flag now tied to the couple. Many people have gloomily accepted the conventional wisdom that because there is no binding Supreme Court ethics code, there is no way to force Associate Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas to recuse themselves from the Jan. 6 cases that are before the court. Justices Alito and Thomas are probably making the same assumption. Justice Thomas’s wife, Ginni Thomas, was deeply involved in the Jan. 6 “stop the steal” movement. Above the Virginia home of Justice Alito and his wife, Martha-Ann Alito, flew an upside-down American flag — a strong political statement among the people who stormed the Capitol.
