New York CNN —For over a year, the red-hot housing market has been at the mercy of the Federal Reserve’s rate hikes, which have driven mortgage rates to sky-high levels. Mortgage rates have hovered above 7% since August, according to Freddie Mac data. Both those factors have helped create a scorching-hot housing market and a boom in homebuilder stocks, as Americans turned to building as a buying alternative. Moderating bond yields could change the narrative for the housing market. Tight supply and elevated mortgage rates this year made home purchases the least affordable they’ve been since 1984.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday gave his take on earnings as the season draws to a close, saying that sectors as a whole managed to perform fairly well. "When you look at all the groups, this was not a disappointing earnings season at all," he said. He argued that Alphabet also reported positive results, he said, adding the stock may have "roared" if management had better explained issues with the company's cloud business. He also said that companies in the utilities sector reported positive figures, but were hurt primarily because of the bond market. "Aside from Whirlpool and drug company Pfizer, I've been very impressed with pretty much every company that's reported so far," Cramer said.

The way Boomers and Millennials are spending can inform investment decisions, Bank of America analysts say. In a note published Friday, BofA analysts wrote that investors should go "long Boomer stocks" and "short Millennial stocks." Specifically, they're spending a lot on health care, entertainment, and home improvement. When they are shelling out, they're spending more on housing and apparel, but are generally more strapped for cash. Millennials, meanwhile, are skint as borrowing costs shoot up and wealth accumulation gets stymied by a historically unaffordable housing market.

Boomers have cash and appear to be weathering rising interest rates better than other generations, according to Bank of America. Because of this, the bank sees stocks particularly exposed to the well-off group that investors of all ages should buy. In contrast, Bank of America found millennials are the only generation with a meaningful amount of mortgage debt incurred after 2021, according to Bank of America. Bank data shows boomers have yet to feel the pinch from higher rates — and the wealthy subsection of the generation is actually benefitting from them. Given apparel is more prominent among millennials, Kwon pointed to Revolve as a short play.

CNN —Home builder stocks are on a tear, boosted by a jump in demand as some Americans shun the historically tight and unaffordable market for existing housing. The Federal Reserve’s bid to bring down inflation by raising interest rates has sent US mortgage rates soaring over the past year. That’s been a boon to home builder stocks. That helped lift some home builder stocks, though many still slipped in August along with the broader market. It is thereby squeezing the pool of existing homes, which are typically more affordable than new construction. Public homebuilders on average have raised prices in about two-thirds of their communities, said BTIG analyst Carl Reichardt. This comes as the pricing gap between existing and new homes has narrowed, following a price appreciation in the resale market. "When the existing home market is seeing a price appreciation, it supports pricing power for new construction." However, as a consequence of recovery in new construction prices since last year, "affordability is close to its worst levels in at least the last three decades," said James Egan, Morgan Stanley housing strategist.

CNBC's Jim Cramer told investors on Monday not to solely rely on analysts' top-down, broad market assessments. According to Cramer, it's imperative to also pay attention to micro-analysis of a company's performance when buying individual stocks. "After all these years, I've come to know one immutable truth: There's no monopoly on stock market knowledge," Cramer said. Top-down analysts, Cramer said, might fixate on how the Federal Reserve's rate hikes might affect the company. Cramer stressed that he is not just "cherry-picking" names and instead said there are many companies that often defy macro expectations.

When a bagel with cream cheese doubles in cost the taste is tainted. So, 'getting there, going in the right direction' is the language we will hear about the state of inflation Wednesday morning. But it's not just about the cost of a block of cream cheese. Whether it's a block of cream cheese going for $150 or a Toll Brothers (TOL) home selling for $1 million, with multiple bidders, we are all bewildered. The longer a block of cream cheese stays at $150, the more ingrained it gets.

RBC Capital Markets thinks strong gains are in store for Toll Brothers as demand improves. The firm thinks sentiment surrounding the luxury homebuilder's shares have been "overly negative." Analyst Mike Dahl said "given TOL's high-end, West Coast and build-to-order exposures," recent trends show the company has experienced improvement similar to its peers. With the end of another earnings season in sight, Wall Street's attention has turned to Washington and the debt ceiling deadline. Republican negotiators on Friday walked out of talks on raising the debt limit , abruptly ending a positive week of discussions that appeared to be leading toward a deal. Democrats and the White House have been pushing for a "clean" hike to the debt limit that would push the next deadline past the 2024 presidential election, while Republicans are pressing for spending cuts. Many investors believe this ongoing game of chicken over the debt limit is largely for show, since the U.S. has never defaulted on its debt obligations. U.S. President Joe Biden hosts debt limit talks with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and other congressional leaders in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington, U.S., May 9, 2023.
At least that's the thinking of a small but growing chorus of voices on Wall Street who outline the case for further stock market gains after both the S & P 500 and Nasdaq Composite touched nine-month highs this past week. The VIX was trading around 16-17 late this week, signaling no great fear among professional traders. Walmart and other retailers this week highlighted consumers are spending less freely, but they're still spending , and that drives two thirds of the economy. Even Mark Haefele, chief investment officer at UBS Global Wealth Management, wrote late this week that he has to entertain what could go right in markets, despite the fact his own view is fundamentally bearish. If that "upside scenario" happens, UBS sees global stocks moving 13% higher by the end of December, and the S & P 500 surging another 6% — to north of 4,400.

I have not been bombarded with as many warnings about how we are about to embark upon a wave of failures of all sorts — shadow banks, regional banks, commercial real estate lenders, real estate investment trusts — at any time since 2007. Let's take commercial real estate. I mention SL Green because it may be the most challenged of the REITs, real estate investment trusts, other than Vornado Realty Trust (VNO), a historically fine New York real estate concern, which just delayed its dividend. Chartmaster David Keller shared the three biggest risks facing the market right now. The S&P 500 may struggle to break past technical resistance of 4,200 and 4,300. He predicted that if the VIX rises to 20, the S&P 500 would fall to a vital support level of 3,800. The percentage of S&P 500 stocks trading above their 50-day moving average (in green) has fallen below 50% recently. David Keller, StockCharts.comPoor market breadth should be a serious concern for investors, Keller said.
