Ismail Kadare, the Albanian novelist and poet who single-handedly wrote his isolated Balkan homeland onto the map of world literature, creating often dark, allegorical works that obliquely criticized the country’s totalitarian state, died in Tirana, Albania, on Monday. In a literary career that spanned half a century, Mr. Kadare (pronounced kah-dah-RAY) wrote scores of books, including novels and collections of poems, short stories and essays. He shot to international fame in 1970 when his first novel, “The General of the Dead Army,” was translated into French. Mr. Kadare’s name was floated several times for the Nobel Prize, but the honor eluded him. In 2005, he received the inaugural Man Booker International Prize (now the International Booker Prize), awarded to a living writer of any nationality for overall achievement in fiction.

The same could not be said for their sprawling entertainment businesses. The three men meet occasionally to discuss the state of the industry, and lively disagreements have a been a staple of their discussions. But by the time they met on the yacht, they had all agreed that the money-losing status quo in the streaming business was unsustainable. “There was peace in the valley for a period of time,” Mr. Malone mused in a rare recent interview, recalling the days before video-streaming upended the lucrative cable business. Disney laid off thousands of workers and pushed out its chief executive as streaming losses mounted, and had to fend off a proxy contest from the activist investor Nelson Peltz.

AdvertisementHowever, Nvidia's run faces one big risk: it depends on the generative AI boom lasting. Though tech giants, including Apple, Google, Meta, and Microsoft, now appear to have made generative AI their priority, there appears to be awareness of the technology's weaknesses. Google, for instance, was forced to apologize earlier this year after its generative AI image generator created historically incorrect images in response to user requests. For now, though, the industry seems intent on moving ahead with LLM-enabled generative AI. That should keep Nvidia in the race with Microsoft and Apple to a $4 trillion valuation.

Meetings between Spain and Italy rarely disappoint and this one was no exception — even if it was an own goal that decided the contest. Victory sees Spain progress to the knockout stage as group winners, while for Italy it’s all to play for against Croatia on Monday. The one-way traffic continued after half-time, and Spain got to 11 efforts at goal without finding the net. Some will focus on Donnarumma pushing Morata’s header into a helpless Calafiori’s path for Spain’s goal. Here's what five forecasters have to say about the latest rally — and why they think the stock market is headed for a fall. In 2009, he wrote a book predicting a stock market crash and ensuing economic depression, which he said could last for 10 years or more. The research firm is predicting the S&P 500 could see a steep correction following a rally to 6,500. Yet, that could end up being an excellent opportunity for investors who are diversified in other areas of the market, Bernstein said. CNN —For more than a century, scientists have been unsuccessfully hunting for skull fossils for the thunder bird species Genyornis newtoni. Now, the discovery of a complete G. newtoni skull has resolved this longstanding mystery, giving scientists their first face-to-face encounter with the massive mihirung. The illustration also highlights how G. newtoni stacks up sizewise to its closest relative, Anhima cornuta (nearest to G. newtoni) and the cassowary (not related). But Salesforce is the most glaring of the enterprise software behemoths, which include ServiceNow , Adobe , Workday , SAP , Intuit , and fallen star MongoDB .
