The consumer goods giant said it would take a $1.3 billion non-cash impairment charge before tax in the current quarter ending Dec. 31 on its Gillette business. P&G, which bought Gillette for $57 billion in 2005, gets about 8% of its total sales from the grooming business. "It's very difficult for us as a U.S. dollar-denominated company to create value (in these markets)," Schulten said. Total charges will be between $2 billion and $2.5 billion after tax and will be recognized in fiscal years 2024 and 2025. Net earnings attributable to the company was $14.7 billion for fiscal 2023.

Following Monday's trade, Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust will no longer own a position in Emerson Electric. Even with the market overbought all last week, the S & P 500 squeezed out a gain of nearly 1% — its fifth straight weekly advance. For reference, any reading of 4% or more means the market is technically overbought (a reading of less than minus 4% means oversold). To help figure out the market's pulse, we like to refer to the Oscillator as our guidepost for buying or selling stocks. Whenever the market is overbought to this degree, our discipline is to look at areas to raise extra cash.

We are making a small sale Monday and staying true to the S & P Oscillator, a technical indicator we monitor for oversold and overbought conditions in the market. Conversely, an overbought reading suggests the market rally has gotten a little extended in the immediate term, and some time is needed to digest those gains. Thanks to the roughly 7% rally in the S & P 500 since the end of October, the S & P Oscillator has flipped from oversold to overbought. That's the assessment of a new report released on Thursday by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS). There is growing concern about a contradiction in the U.S. economy: jobs are plentiful and economic growth is strong, especially compared with other advanced economies, but surveys show many Americans are sour about the outlook. A key part of the report is a new tool developed to measure the well-being of Americans, which combines 11 different measures. Researchers around the world have long sought to find better ways to gauge the well-being of people that look beyond measures such as economic growth or unemployment. Reuters GraphicsOne unique part of the measure is an attempt to quantify the "political voice" of Americans.

But the mood of Vermeer and many other global producers has turned sour on China. REUTERS/Timothy Aeppel/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 18 (Reuters) - Procter & Gamble (PG.N) topped market expectations for quarterly sales and profit on Wednesday, benefiting from higher prices as well as steady demand for its personal care products and cleaning supplies. While P&G's moves to consistently raise prices over the past several months have dented sales volumes with some cost-conscious shoppers turning to cheaper alternatives, the benefits from higher prices have helped bolster its profits. Gross margin improved 460 basis points to 52% in the quarter ended Sept. 30 and the company kept its annual profit outlook despite expectations for a $1 billion after-tax impact from unfavorable foreign exchange rates. P&G now expects sales growth to be in the range of 2%-4% for fiscal 2024, compared to its prior estimate of a 3%-4% rise, owing to currency fluctuations. Per-share profit of $1.83 per share also beat expectations of $1.72.

Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman plans to retire by May 2024. "Cross-pollinating key leaders across our major businesses further knits the Morgan Stanley culture," Gorman wrote in a memo at the time. Morgan Stanley, which was the lead underwriter, had to step in to prop up the stock. If the strike expands, it would only be a matter of weeks before some smaller suppliers faltered, said Marick Masters, a professor of business at Wayne State University.
