While Woody Allen's film may be a reference point to “American Fiction,” direct comparisons are harder to come by for such a breezy but biting commentary. Directing a film, Jefferson says, wasn't necessarily a lifelong ambition. That “American Fiction” is hard to categorize, he says, might mean he's on the right track. “This being my first movie, I’m eager to find what my voice is,” Jefferson says. ___Follow AP Film Writer Jake Coyle on Twitter at: http://twitter.com/jakecoyleAP

CNN —Lil Nas X’s Toronto International Film Festival premiere for his documentary “Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero” was delayed Saturday while police investigated a threat in the area, officials confirmed to CNN on Sunday. “Yesterday, at the TIFF, a passerby uttered a threat towards private security. Out of an abundance of caution, the Toronto Police and the private security swept the scene and cleared within 20 minutes. To our knowledge, this was a general threat and not directed at the film or the artist,” the statement continued. Directed by Carlos López Estrada and Zac Manuel, “Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero” features footage of Lil Nas X “as he navigated the whirlwind of fame, creativity, and growing responsibility that came with his meteoric success,” according to an official synopsis.

TORONTO (AP) — The premiere of the documentary “Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero” was delayed after a bomb threat was called in at the Toronto International Film Festival. The Saturday night premiere of the film at Toronto's Roy Thomson Hall was delayed by about 20 minutes while authorities verified that the threat wasn't credible. Lil Nas X was kept off the red carpet during that time. Judy Lung, vice president of public affairs and communications for TIFF, said in a statement that Toronto police investigated the vicinity of the red carpet ahead of the screening. “Our standard security measures remained in place during this time and the screening commenced with a slight delay,” Lung said.

TORONTO (AP) — After a three-and-a-half-hour documentary on his life, Paul Simon had only sympathy for the audience. The 81-year-old Simon, himself, hadn't watched the film before its debut, and he didn't watch it Sunday, either. “In Restless Dreams,” which takes its name from a lyric in “The Sound of Silence” ("In restless dreams I walked alone"), also intimately captures Simon painstakingly assembling his latest album, “Seven Psalms," which was released in May. “I haven’t accepted it entirely, but I’m beginning to,” Simon told the audience of his hearing loss in a post-screening Q&A. “Having the truth about me depicted by an observer is very interesting to me," Simon said.

Canada created 39,900 jobs, Statistics Canada said, compared with a median forecast for a gain of 15,000. The labor market has been resilient even as the Bank of Canada (BoC) raised its key overnight rate 10 times since March 2022 to cool the economy. Money markets see a 44% chance of another BoC rate hike by year-end, up from 36% before the data were published. "This report alone won't make the Bank of Canada regret holding rates steady earlier this week. Derek Holt, vice president of capital markets economics at Scotiabank, noted a gain of 49,500 people in self-employed jobs.

[1/3] Director Craig Gillespie poses during the gala presentation of "Dumb Money" at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada September 8, 2023. Dumb Money captures the behind-the-scenes of one of the biggest Wall Street stories of COVID that hooked retail investors and created a mutiny by grabbing the attention of professional investors on social media. It chronicles the battle between institutional and retail investors when Reddit-inspired small traders rose up against Wall Street by buying shares of GameStop (GME.N) en masse, creating large losses for short sellers. With the tagline "Dear Wall Street ...," the movie is "very front and center" and is timely in discussing the topic of wealth disparity in America, Gillespie said. Teddy Schwarzman declined to comment on how his familial ties to Wall Street affected the production of "Dumb Money."

Their response lies in their new documentary "Love to Hate: Nickelback." The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on Friday, a fitting homecoming for the Canadian band. Starring band members Chad Kroeger, Michael Kroeger, Ryan Peake and Daniel Adair, the film takes both haters and fans on a journey through the group's "rollercoaster career." "We thought this was a chance for us to hold the narrative," said Ryan Peake, Nickelback's guitarist and backing vocalist. Frontman Chad Kroeger no longer rocks his iconic long hair, but his blonde frosted tips brought a hint of nostalgia from the band's original look.

For Miyazaki, who painstakingly crafts thousands of hand drawings for a film, it's a long and laborious process. Several of Miyazaki's films rank among the biggest box-office hits ever in Japan; there are few other filmmakers today as revered — and fiercely beloved — as Miyazaki. “I am making this movie because I do not have the answer," Miyazaki told The New York Times in 2021. We are again, invited into a dizzyingly colorful otherworldly fantasy of Miyazaki's making. If this is to be the last Miyazaki movie (it would be unwise to ever really count him out), it's a tremendously moving goodbye.

REUTERS/Thomas White/Illustration Acquire Licensing RightsSept 6 (Reuters) - Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland defended the central bank's independence on Wednesday after her comments welcoming the Bank of Canada's decision not to increase its key interest rate raised concerns to the contrary. In a widely expected decision, the Bank of Canada held interest rates steady at a 22-year high of 5%. It is rare for Canadian government ministers to publicly back or criticize central bank policies. Like many developed economies, the Bank of Canada makes its monetary policy decisions independent of the federal government. In June, when the central bank raised rates for the first time after a four-month pause, Freeland stressed that she respected the independence of the central bank, a sentiment she repeated in a press conference later in the day.

The central bank hiked rates by a quarter point in both June and July in a bid to tame stubbornly high inflation. "We don't want to raise our policy rate more than we have to," Macklem said, adding that persistently high inflation would be worse for Canadians than high borrowing costs. Macklem came under a rare attack last year from opposition politicians for misjudging inflation and locking in to a rigid forward guidance. "We are turning the corner on inflation," Macklem told reporters in January when the BoC became the first major central bank to announce a pause. The central bank's tightening campaign is a major concern for Canadians who loaded up on cheap mortgages and took on credit card and other debt in recent years. "Now maybe you're getting a certain maturity of the central bank that says, 'We're not going to do that again,'" Holt said. He assured Canadians during the pandemic that rates would rise only in 2023 when it expected the economic slack to be absorbed, but the central bank began hiking rates in March 2022 as inflation spiked.

July 15 (Reuters) - Rare twin strikes by Hollywood actors and film and television writers are casting a pall over British Columbia's creative industry, which has become a hub for American film and TV production. Film production in British Columbia is down to "a trickle," said Gemma Martini, Chair of the Motion Picture Production Industry Association and CEO of Martini Film Studios. TAKING A TOLLReverberations that started on May 2 with the writers' strike grew in British Columbia, where most productions have American components. First the business was hit by the writers' strike: "Because no scripts are being written, people aren't coming to scout our locations."
