West Papua, Indonesia — New Zealand pilot Phillip Mehrtens has been freed from more than 18 months in captivity in Indonesia’s Papua, the Indonesian police said in a statement on Saturday. An armed faction of the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB), led by Egianus Kogoya, kidnapped Mehrtens on Feb. 7, 2023, after he landed a small commercial plane in the remote, mountainous area of Nduga. “We are prioritising approach through religious leaders, church leaders, traditional leaders and Egianus Kogoya’s close family to minimise casualties and maintain the safety of the pilot,” said the chief of Cartenz 2024 Peace Operations, Brigadier General Faizal Ramadhani. Mehrtens was freed and picked up by a joint team in Nduga Regency and is undergoing health check-ups and a physiological examination in Timika regency, the police said. CNN —Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told CNN that Ukraine’s request to use long-range missiles on targets inside Russia is part of his “victory plan,” that he is due to present to US officials next week. Zelensky added that, besides Biden, he would also meet the Democratic presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris. Zelensky is expected to visit the US next week, taking part at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. On Wednesday, Ukraine claimed it destroyed a large Russian ammunition depot in the western Russian region of Tver. Israeli soldiers can be seen throwing apparently lifeless bodies from a rooftop during a raid in the occupied West Bank, videos geolocated by NBC News show — an incident the Israeli military said Friday was under review and did not align with its values. The videos first emerged on social media Thursday and show Israeli soldiers on a rooftop near the town of Qabatiya, west of Jenin, in the north of the West Bank. Another video showing more of the incident from a different angle shows three men throwing three bodies from the rooftop, one by one. A dozen sanctioned ships were known to load Russian crude and crude products in August and September, up from just one sanctioned ship recorded in April, the outlet reported. Another 20 sanctioned tankers are known to be idling near Russia's coasts or anchored at Russian ports, the report added. Falling crude prices also appear to be hitting Russia's oil trade.

WASHINGTON — As president, Donald Trump slashed a lucrative tax break enjoyed by coastal donors and suburban swing-state voters. Authorities say Ryan Wesley Routh was lying in wait for former President Donald Trump at the West Palm Beach golf course on Sunday with a semi-automatic rifle. Another business owner who was visited by the FBI believed their business may have had surveillance video of Routh leaving the scene, and that business owner says the FBI copied the file containing the video. A third business said that agents visited them for surveillance video after the shooting. Federal charging documents allege that Routh arrived at the golf course at 1:59 a.m. ET the day he was allegedly spotted with a weapon near the course, based on FBI cell phone analysis.

The St. Ann Police Department received a tip around 1 p.m. Tuesday through the Courage2Report tip line about a threat to Ritenour High School in St. Louis. Police found the teen sitting in a car in the parking lot of Husky Academy, about a mile away from the high school with a fully loaded gun. The video the teen posted to social media panned to show an unoccupied police vehicle parked next to the teen’s car. The teen, a former student with the Ritenour School District, was charged with first-degree terrorist threat, resisting arrest, and unlawful use of weapons. The chief said the police department has already investigated seven unsubstantiated school shooting threats since the beginning of the school year.

CNN —United Nations members voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to demand that Israel end its occupation of Palestinian territories within 12 months. Fourteen countries voted against, including the United States, Hungary, Israel, Argentina, Czechia, Fiji, Malawi, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Tonga, and Tuvalu. In its advisory opinion, the ICJ said Israel should end its occupation “as rapidly as possible.” The UN’s resolution gives a 12-month timeline. During the 1967 war, Israel captured the West Bank, East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and the Golan heights from neighboring Arab states.
