Scott Olson | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesFormer President Donald Trump is building a second-term economic agenda that analysts say could reheat the very inflation that he has slammed President Joe Biden for creating. We have a ring around the country," Trump said in a TIME interview released Tuesday, referring to aggressive tariffs he has promised to impose in a second term. Yet economists and Wall Street analysts agree that these plans would likely drive consumer prices higher. "A second Trump term could bring higher tariffs, attempts to weaken the dollar, even higher deficits, deportation of illegal immigrants, and other policies that could put upward pressure on inflation," Piper Sandler analysts wrote last week. Reached for comment, the Trump campaign said, "under President Trump, inflation was non-existent, gasoline was cheap, groceries were affordable, and the American Dream was alive and well."

The stock market ended the volatile week lower, but there could still be opportunities for plenty of companies' shares to rebound. CNBC Pro used its stock screener tool to find the most overbought and oversold stocks on Wall Street as measured by their 14-day relative strength index, or RSI. Stocks with a 14-day RSI above 70 are considered overbought, which indicates that shares might soon turn lower. Devon Energy made the list of overbought stocks, dominated by oil and gas producers, with an RSI of 82. On the other hand, Texas-based life insurer Globe Life , with an RSI of just 3, is among the most oversold stocks on Wall Street.

But the possible downside of the better forecast: less Fed easing with the possibility that officials at their meeting this week forecast fewer rate cuts in 2024 they did in December. The CNBC Fed Survey respondents include economists, strategists and fund managers. And while the average recession probability is down, about 20% of respondents still say there's an even money chance or greater of a downturn in the next 12 months. "The larger-than-consensus reduction in the federal funds rate in my forecast is contingent on a recession that brings inflation down," said Robert Fry, of Robert Fry Economics. He has a 60% recession probability and sees the Fed slashing rates to 3.6% by year end from the current level of 5.38%.

Nvidia shares dipped 3% on Tuesday morning after the company unveiled its new generation of artificial intelligence chips, called Blackwell. The company also announced a new enterprise software product known as Nvidia Inference Microservice, which makes it easier to run older generations of Nvidia GPUs. Still, the Wells Fargo analysts wrote the news reinforced their "long-standing positive thesis" on Nvidia's technology and monetization opportunities. "Based on our recent industry conversations, we expect Blackwell to be the fastest ramping product in Nvidia's history," the analysts wrote in a note to investors. It may seem counterintuitive for Wall Street to reward companies for letting people go. After all, layoffs are usually thought to be a sign that the business isn’t doing so hot. And while a lot of the layoff talk is concentrated in tech, investors were also quite pleased about job cuts at Estée Lauder . Many companies took an aggressive approach to hiring during the pandemic, particularly tech companies whose engagement boomed while everyone was stuck at home. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A Texas company has reached a multimillion-dollar settlement with the federal government and the state of New Mexico to address air pollution concerns in the largest oil and gas producing region in the United States. New Mexico Environment Secretary James Kenney said he's concerned about the compliance rate for companies operating in New Mexico, describing it as terrible. The civil complaint targeting Apache comes nearly a year after federal and state officials announced a similar agreement with another producer in the Permian Basin over violations. In 2022, an investigation by The Associated Press showed 533 oil and gas facilities in the region were emitting excessive amounts of methane. In all, state officials said the recent consent decrees with energy companies cover about 15% of oil and gas production in New Mexico and about 9% of the wells.

Hackash said the team mostly worked through Swift’s family, including her parents Scott and Andrea, to snag an appearance. MOSCOW (Reuters) - U.N. nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi visited the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine on Wednesday and said there were enough wells on site to supply cooling pools, Russian news agencies reported. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also rotated its team of observers who are permanently stationed at Zaporizhzhia, the agencies reported. Russia seized control of Europe's largest nuclear power plant after launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and its six nuclear reactors are now idled. Nuclear plants need enough water to cool their reactors and to help prevent a nuclear meltdown. Grossi was accompanied on his visit by Russian soldiers who have occupied the territory in southeastern Ukraine where the nuclear plant is located since soon after the 2022 invasion.

The study found military personnel stationed at U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune were at higher risk for some types of leukemia and lymphoma and cancers of the lung, breast, throat, esophagus and thyroid. Camp Lejeune was built in a sandy pine forest along the North Carolina coast in the early 1940s. People who got sick after being at Camp Lejeune also have criticized the federal government for being slow to investigate. Frank Bove, a senior epidemiologist, has led the agency's Camp Lejeune research for many years and was in charge of the latest study. (AP) — Residents of an east Arkansas town have been without running water for the past two weeks after the state was hit by below-freezing temperatures, and the outage has forced them to line up for bottled water, fill up jugs or take showers at a truck brought in by the state. The town faced a similar crisis last summer, when the same part of the city was without water in June. The outages are affecting one of two water systems for Helena-West Helena, which was two separate cities until 2006. Each day, distribution sites for the water have seen a steady line of people filling up on water to use for their homes. He said citizens in general have been understanding of the emergency water distribution process.

NEW YORK (AP) — N. Scott Momaday, a Pulitzer Prize-winning storyteller, poet, educator and folklorist whose debut novel "House Made of Dawn" is widely credited as the starting point for contemporary Native American literature, has died. “His Kiowa heritage was deeply meaningful to him and he devoted much of his life to celebrating and preserving Native American culture, especially the oral tradition." Like Joseph Heller’s “Catch-22,” Momaday’s novel was a World War II story that resonated with a generation protesting the Vietnam War. Addressing a gathering of American Indian scholars in 1970, Momaday said, “Our very existence consists in our imagination of ourselves.” He championed Natives' reverence for nature, writing that "the American Indian has a unique investment in the American landscape." Audio guides to tours of the Smithsonian Institution's Museum of the American Indian featured Momaday's avuncular baritone.

Goldman Sachs"We expect price increases to be driven by modest earnings growth and well-supported price-to-earnings multiples," wrote Austin Pickle, a strategist at WFII, in a January 16 note. Stucky continued: "I've never seen a re-acceleration in earnings growth — which is what the baseline expectation is for earnings — absent some sort of economic recovery or an acceleration in economic growth. He noted that many factors influence profits, but added that his forward model suggests there's earnings risk ahead. Bianco said he expects flat or mid-single-digit earnings growth for stocks in most sectors. However, he said that during expansions, GDP growth is a poor predictor of earnings growth.

The Wells Fargo report, entitled “FAA audit opens up a whole new can of worms,” noted that Boeing’s quality control and engineering problems have been ongoing for years. After part of an Alaska Airlines] 737 Max 9 jet fell off the plane mid-flight, the likelihood of the US Federal Aviation Administration coming out of its investigation without significant findings was very low. The FAA last week opened an investigation into Boeing’s quality control after the Alaska Airlines incident. He also said Boeing is now more closely monitoring the work of a key supplier that builds the 737 Max fuselage. Wells Fargo analysts noted in their report that the FAA investigation could take some time to complete, noting many of its probes remain “under investigation” months after the original incidents.
