TLAXCALA, Mexico — An explosion at a Simec-owned steel plant in Mexico’s central Tlaxcala state in the early hours of Wednesday killed at least 12 people, state authorities said. “At the plant of the steel complex located in the city of Apizaco, Tlaxcala, a liquid steel spill occurred with the loss of human lives, temporarily paralyzing operations,” the firm said in a statement. The state civil protection office said in a social media post that the blast was likely caused after smelting apparatus collapsed. Those killed were workers at the plant, the state prosecutor’s office told Reuters. However, molten steel, when it comes into contact with water, causes an explosion.

A New York woman and two children, including an infant, died after going over Niagara Falls this week, state police said. The incident occurred about 9 p.m. Monday, near Goat Island, state police said in a statement. The 33-year-old woman and the two children, a 9-year-old and a 5-month-old, were all from Niagara Falls, state police said. State police did not specify in the statement the relationship between the woman and the children. An investigation determined the woman and children crossed over a safety guard rail and went over Niagara Falls on Luna Island, which is attached to Goat Island, according to state police.

Groups in favor of the ballot measure are making a final push as early voting is underway, with hundreds of thousands of ballots already cast. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued an El Paso doctor on Tuesday, accusing him of providing transition-related medical care to nearly two dozen minors in violation of state law. Texas enacted a law, Senate Bill 14, last year banning gender-affirming care for anyone under 18. WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed Republican officials in Virginia to revive a plan aimed at removing noncitizen voters from the rolls ahead of next week’s election. Virginia has same-day voter registration, meaning that any eligible voter who was removed from the rolls should still be able to vote. The Justice Department said that while states can review its voter rolls, it cannot do so right before an election. States are barred from systematically removing people from voters rolls within 90 days of an election under the National Voter Registration Act. In court papers, the groups said that "the record makes clear that citizens are being removed from the voter rolls."

A Russian court fined Google for not restoring YouTube accounts linked to Russian TV channels. Ivan Morozov, a Moscow-based lawyer, told the state-run TASS newswire that a Russian court ordered the tech giant to restore Russian media accounts on YouTube, a Google-owned company. To put this into perspective, the world's GDP is equivalent to about $105 trillion, a minuscule fraction of the fine. In 2022, Google's Russian legal arm, Google LLC, filed for bankruptcy, and authorities seized its bank accounts, though free services continue to operate in the country.
