Von der Leyen names European Commission's new top team

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen attends a press conference, on the day of a European Union leaders summit, in Brussels, Belgium March 22, 2024. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday named Spain's ecological transition minister Teresa Ribera as the bloc's next antitrust commissioner while Estonia's Kaja Kallas will be in charge of foreign policy. All commissioners will report to German conservative von der Leyen, who this summer was handed a second term as EU chief executive by member states after her political camp won the most votes in EU elections. A second Trump presidency could sharply alter Western unity on supporting Ukraine against Russia's invasion and up-end EU trade relations with the world's biggest economy. There was some drama on Monday on the next Commission's line-up, when France picked Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne as its new candidate after the incumbent, Thierry Breton, abruptly quit with tough words for von der Leyen.

Apple is in discussions with JPMorgan Chase for the bank to take over the tech giant's flagship credit card program from Goldman Sachs , a person with knowledge of the negotiations said. But the move shows the extent to which Apple's choices were limited when Goldman Sachs decided to pivot from its ill-fated retail banking strategy. There are only a few card issuers in the U.S. with the scale and appetite to take over the Apple Card program, which had saddled Goldman with losses and regulatory scrutiny. JPMorgan is the country's biggest credit card issuer by purchase volume, according to the Nilson Report, an industry newsletter. Apple and JPMorgan declined to comment on the negotiations, which were reported earlier by the Wall Street Journal.

CNBC's Jim Cramer said Monday that investors shouldn't panic over the size of the Federal Reserve's expected interest rate cut this week. Instead, they should focus on the stocks that will benefit from the easing monetary policy. He stressed, "What matters is we're in a rate cut cycle. In a rate cut cycle, you buy a lot of stocks that … should really start accelerating because they've been hurt." When central bankers announce their next policy move, Cramer said that there will likely be some market volatility regardless of the size of the reduction.

If you're looking to build wealth, traditional forms of investment aren't going to get you there — at least according to young, rich people. For younger wealthy investors, though, stocks come in behind seven other types of investments, including real estate, cryptocurrency, private equity and direct investment into companies. Klontz says that younger wealthy investors may be falling victim to some of the same cognitive biases that regular investors do — and it may be holding them back from maximizing their returns. Even with recent rotation away from megacap tech stocks, there may still be a case for investing in thematic tech exchange-traded funds. Roundhill Investments runs the Roundhill Generative AI & Technology ETF (CHAT), which is up 13.8% year to date as of Friday's market close. But despite recent volatility in the group, the firm's CEO Dave Mazza thinks the investment thesis is still intact. Pointing to some of CHAT's under-the-radar artificial intelligence plays, Mazza waived off concerns that thematic ETFs may be too narrow in scope. "There are companies like Dell in the portfolio and others, ServiceNow and Salesforce , who are using AI and integrating AI," he said.

Lower interest rates may impact your investment portfolio following the Fed's first rate cut. "They get spooked by something like policy changes and sell out of a diversified investment portfolio. "Generally, lower interest rates boost the economy as lending gets cheaper for consumers and businesses, " says Eckles. However, as interest rates fall, the attractiveness of these cash investments declines. The inverse relationship between bond prices and interest rates means that as rates fall, bond prices rise, providing another return component.
