The city of Minneapolis agreed Thursday to pay $950,000 to settle a lawsuit alleging that journalists were subjected to police harassment and even hurt while covering protests over the police killings of George Floyd. Several journalists reported being struck by less-lethal munitions and being herded and detained while covering protests. And the ACLU added the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office to the suit then. The lawsuit continues against the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and its former sheriff, Dave Hutchinson. The city, as well as the sheriff's office, did not immediately respond to requests Thursday afternoon for comment from The Associated Press.

ESPN will launch its flagship direct-to-consumer service in either August or the fall of 2025, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced during an interview Wednesday with CNBC's Julia Boorstin. The service will include all of ESPN's programming and feature new personalization and integration with ESPN's fantasy platforms and ESPN Bet. The direct-to-consumer service would have been the first time noncable subscribers could access ESPN outside of the traditional cable bundle. ESPN didn't announce a price for the flagship direct-to-consumer service. Disney already has a sports streaming service in ESPN+, which ended the quarter with 25.2 million subscribers, down from 26 million a quarter ago.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Philadelphia Eagles will be the host team for the NFL's first regular-season game in Brazil on Friday, Sept. 6 — a day after the 2024 season opener, Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday. Goodell made news when he said the Eagles will play in Sao Paolo against a to-be-named opponent. It’ll be the first time in 54 years the NFL has played a game on Friday night of its opening weekend. The game will be played at the Corinthians Arena, home to Brazilian soccer team SC Corinthians. The Eagles’ opponent, along with the kickoff time, will be announced closer to when the 2024 schedule is revealed this spring.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Supreme Court on Wednesday reversed the murder and kidnapping convictions of a former probation officer who was sentenced to life without parole for her role in the death of a Minneapolis real estate agent. In the early hours of 2020, Baugh was found shot to death in a Minneapolis alley. The state Supreme Court affirmed the convictions of two of the other defendants earlier while its ruling on Wiggins, the alleged leader of the plot, remains pending. But they said the evidence was not strong enough to convict her of aiding and abetting first-degree premeditated murder, or premeditated attempted murder. So the high court threw out her convictions and sent the case back to the lower court for further proceedings on the remaining kidnapping and felony murder charges.

Walz thanked the state’s snowplow drivers for braving dangerous conditions, working 12-hour shifts and clearing 200 miles (322 kilometers) or more at a time. Ten states and the District of Columbia already allow some form of physician-assisted suicide, while proponents are planning fresh pushes to pass it this year in several other states. Patients would have to have the mental capacity to make their own health care decisions and provide informed consent, so those with dementia would not qualify. “Suicide is not health care. Current law already gives people the right to make legally binding end-of-care health care directives, the right to hospice and palliative care, and the right to refuse care, she said.

He will be the first former Chargers player to return to the team as head coach.
