Until then, the front is being called Tropical Depression Four, with the name Debby available should it graduate to tropical storm. Maximum sustained winds of 30 mph kept it below the 39 mph threshold for tropical storm status late Friday, but the National Hurricane Center said it would continue to strengthen. The front graduated from Potential Tropical Depression Four to Tropical Depression Four on Friday night as it gained strength over warm Caribbean waters. It was "expected to become a tropical storm over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico by late Saturday," the hurricane center said in an update late Friday. A tropical storm watch is also in effect for some areas, including the Florida Keys south of the Card Sound Bridge.

CNN —A tropical depression making its way towards the Florida coast is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Debby Saturday before delivering heavy, flooding rainfall and dangerous storm surge to the state starting this weekend. The storm is expected to enter the eastern Gulf of Mexico on Saturday and become Tropical Storm Debby, according to the hurricane center. Tropical storm conditions could begin Saturday night in parts of southwest Florida. Tropical storm warnings are in effect for the Dry Tortugas and the west coast of the Florida peninsula from East Cape Sable to Boca Grande. Parts of the Florida Keys and parts of the Central Florida coast are also under a tropical storm watch, with officials urging residents there to prepare for tropical storm conditions within the next 48 hours.

Marc Serota for ReutersA tropical depression strengthened into Tropical Storm Debby north of Cuba on Saturday and was predicted to become a hurricane as it moves through the Gulf of Mexico on a collision course with the Florida coast. A hurricane warning was in effect for sections of the state's coast with tropical storm warnings for the Florida Keys. Debby is the fourth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season after Tropical Storm Alberto, Hurricane Beryl and Tropical Storm Chris, all of which formed in June. We're doing everything that we need to be prepared to face a tropical storm," Tampa Mayor Jane Castor said. "We've been in Florida our whole lives, in South Florida, so hurricanes are not really a big, big thing," Silverman said.

Other areas of the southern and western coasts of the peninsula, as well as parts of the Florida Keys, were under a tropical storm watch, forecasters said. The case returns to Judge Tanya Chutkan one month after the Supreme Court issued a game-changing ruling on presidential power. But the Supreme Court interceded earlier this year and put the case on pause to consider Trump’s claims of presidential immunity. Attorneys working on the case believe that Chutkan will move quickly with the case back in her jurisdiction, according to sources familiar with their thinking. Any move she makes will be under extreme scrutiny, given that it’s the only remining federal case against Trump after the Florida federal judge overseeing his classified documents case, Aileen Cannon, dismissed those criminal charges against Trump and his two co-defendants. Cannon appeared to hold hearings on nearly every motion in the Trump case before her, but Chutkan often rules without hearing from the parties in person.

Behind the scenes, the conservative justice sought to put a thumb on the scale for states trying to restrict how social media companies filter content. The states enacted their laws in 2021 and, with variations, restricted the ability of social media platforms to filter third-party messages, videos and other content. Greg Abbott signed that state’s measure, he said, “there is a dangerous movement by social media companies to silence conservative viewpoints and ideas.” In Florida, Gov. Kagan added a footnote to her majority opinion buttressing that point and reinforcing Barrett’s view. But, despite Alito’s protest, Kagan had a majority signing her decision, which, at minimum, offers lower court judges a strong indication of the framework the high court majority would use in future online challenges.

Why orange juice is so expensive

U.S. orange production has plummeted as the industry faces volatile threats from extreme weather events, an incurable disease and economic pressures. At the same time, orange juice futures have hit record highs. Florida has seen a dramatic orange production decline in recent years. Invaio is one of the companies researching and developing treatments for citrus greening. The volatility of these threats may cut into citrus harvest expectations, which leads experts to believe that higher prices for orange juice are likely to remain, at least in the short term.

He's not doing all this out of the kindness of his heart; he's doing it because he wants the credit-card rewards. In a recent poll from Ipsos, 71% of Americans surveyed said they had some sort of rewards, points, or cash-back card, and 80% of those with such a card said they valued their rewards. But maybe we love our credit-card rewards too much, to the point that it's making us act in less-than-ideal ways toward those we hold near and dear. Fort Lauderdale, Florida (AP) — A judge says controversial social media personality Andrew Tate’s defamation lawsuit against a Florida woman who accused him of imprisoning her in Romania can move forward, but he threw out Tate’s allegations against her parents and some allegations against the woman. Romanian officials indicted the Tates last year, saying the brothers forced seven victims into pornography and subjected them to physical violence. Her attorneys say the lawsuit is in retribution for her reporting him to authorities. Curley dismissed the Tates’ accusations that the woman’s parents defamed them when they told American diplomatic officials about their daughter’s allegations. Attorneys for the Tates and the woman each said Curley’s decision was a win for their side.

A federal judge in Florida on Wednesday allowed former President Donald J. Trump’s defamation suit against ABC News to move forward, rejecting an effort by the television network to dismiss the litigation as spurious. The lawsuit, filed in March, argued that ABC’s star anchor, George Stephanopoulos, defamed Mr. Trump by saying on-air numerous times, in a March 10 segment on “This Week,” that the former president had been found liable for raping the writer E. Jean Carroll. Mr. Trump was found liable last year in a Manhattan civil case for sexually abusing and defaming Ms. Carroll. The jury did not find Mr. Trump liable on a technical charge of rape, which is narrowly defined in New York State law. “But a reasonable jury could conclude Plaintiff was defamed and, as a result, dismissal is inappropriate.”
