Ted Purdom, from San Anselmo, California, graduated in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in English and enrolled in an overseas language program, aiming to learn Spanish. He ended up in Mallorca, the capital of the Balearic islands off the east coast of Spain, for the nine-month program. A friend told him about another program that placed American “language coaches” in Spain, called “Auxiliares de Conversación,” (conversation assistants), run by the Spanish Ministry of Education. So that November he opened The Bridge English Academy in Manacor, converting a former wine store into classrooms to give English language courses to locals. Then there’s the fact that the islanders’ first language isn’t Spanish, but Mallorquin, a dialect of Catalan.

Conakry, Guinea Reuters —People living near a chimpanzee research center in Guinea attacked the facility on Friday after a woman said one of the animals had killed her infant, the center’s managers said. Eyewitnesses said the crowd was reacting to the news that the mutilated body of an infant had been found 3 km (1.9 miles) from the Nimba Mountains Nature Reserve, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The research center said it had recorded six chimpanzee attacks on humans within the reserve since the start of the year. There are just seven left in Guinea’s Bossou forest, which forms part of the Nimba Mountains Nature Reserve, and is close to subsistence farming communities of the Nzerekore Region. The Nimba Mountains are also home to one of Guinea’s largest iron ore reserves, which has raised concern among environmentalists about the impact of mining on chimpanzees.

But one employee — or "partner," as Starbucks calls them — at a store that adopted the Siren Craft System earlier this year told Business Insider that the system isn't as effective as Starbucks has portrayed. The Siren Craft System is supposed to free up time that partners can devote to customer service and improving their coffee-making skills, Starbucks said in July. "Unless it's insanely slow, there's no time at any time of day to practice latte art or make samples for customers," the employee who has used the Siren Craft System said. The Siren Craft System is just Starbucks' latest effort to shorten wait times and improve operations at its stores. But now, the Siren System reserves one blender for frappuccinos and the other for Refreshers.

That’s why Maricopa County has spent over $864,000 in federal funds and more than $3 million in county funds to bolster its election security and processes over the past four years. Officials readily shared their worries with CNN, citing death threats, harassment, baseless lawsuits, onerous public-records requests and various security threats spurred by false claims about voter fraud. Amid these challenges, budgets for election security have been squeezed in several ways. Thousands of election workers across the country have reported receiving harassing, offensive or hostile communications, including since the 2022 midterms, according to the Department of Justice’s Election Threats Task Force. As recently as Tuesday, Trump threatened to prosecute and imprison election officials if he wins in November, as he cast doubt on the integrity of the upcoming election.

Men have been steadily dropping out of the workforce, especially men ages 25 to 54, who are considered to be in their prime working years. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for prime-age working men was 3.4% in August 2024. But about 10.5% of men in their prime working years, or roughly 6.8 million men nationwide, are neither working nor looking for employment, compared with just 2.5% in 1954. The 2024 White House race remains too close to call, but Vice President Kamala Harris' momentum is evident when you look just a little past the horse race. “There’s only one explanation for this staggering difference in maternal mortality,” said Nancy L. Among Hispanic women, the rate of women dying while pregnant, during childbirth or soon after increased from 14.5% in 2019 to 18.9% in 2022. While maternal mortality spiked overall during the pandemic, women dying while pregnant or during childbirth rose consistently in Texas following the state’s ban on abortion, according to the Gender Equity Policy Institute.
