Beirut, Lebanon CNN —When our plane finally took off from Beirut, it was nearly an hour late. Before departing for the airport, we held each other extra tight, not sure when we would see each other again. Moments later, the Israeli military carried out a “targeted strike” in southern Beirut, roughly 10 minutes’ drive away. The next day, the hills shook with the sound of sonic booms as Israeli war planes broke the sound barrier overhead. The CNN team in Beirut later confirmed reports that Israeli warplanes had broken the sound barrier in skies over Lebanon.

Two Katyusha rockets were fired at al Asad airbase in western Iraq, two Iraqi security sources said. One Iraqi security source said the rockets fell inside the base. The U.S. officials, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said one of the wounded Americans was seriously injured. "Base personnel are conducting a post-attack damage assessment," one of the officials added. A rare ally of both the U.S. and Iran, Iraq hosts 2,500 U.S. troops and has Iran-backed militias linked to its security forces.

CNN —Several US personnel were injured in a suspected rocket attack Monday against US and coalition forces at Al-Asad Airbase in Iraq, a US defense official said. “We can confirm that there was a suspected rocket attack today against US and Coalition forces at Al-Asad Airbase, Iraq,” the official said. While it’s unclear who carried out the rocket attack on Monday, US officials have long blamed attacks on troops in Iraq and Syria on Iran-backed militia groups. Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said last month after a drone attack on Al-Asad that it was “most likely” carried out by Iranian-supported groups. Between October 17 and January 29, there were more than 150 attacks on US personnel in Iraq and Syria.
