Syngenta IPO delay rekindles past China fears

LONDON, March 28 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Syngenta’s bumpy relisting path in the People’s Republic brings back unpleasant investor memories. The Shanghai Stock Exchange had scheduled this week a hearing, one of the last steps before listing. The exchange’s rules vaguely mandate that any “major issue” affecting an IPO would justify the postponement. It’s unclear how long a drag this would cause, but Shenzhen VMAX New Energy had been on a similar boat: its IPO hearing was abruptly cancelled in January, only to be rescheduled two months later. Ant’s $37 billion Shanghai IPO was pulled in 2020 shortly before its shares were due to start trading.

Photo illustration by Bráulio Amado Talk Can the U.S. See the Truth About China? To see China solely as trying to displace the United States is only going to stoke more fears. The Chinese people believe that a substantially weakened Russia might not be in the interest of China, because if there were the sense that the United States needed to seek out an opponent, China would be next. And then also, the United States thinks that China wants to displace it. The industrial espionage stems from a lack of appreciation from the start of intellectual property, and the United States, by pushing China to do more intellectual-property protection, is actually good for China.
TikTok officially has 150 million monthly active users in the US, the company says. The user figures come as TikTok CEO Shou Chew is set to testify in front of Congress on Thursday. It's still not to the threshold of Facebook, which logs 266 million monthly active users in the US, but it's not far behind. (Facebook parent Meta doesn't break out Instagram's monthly active users in the US.) That number also includes about 5 million businesses that use TikTok as a way to reach customers, he said in a TikTok video on Tuesday.

Trumzz | Istock | Getty ImagesOver the past two years, millions of low-income U.S. households have received broadband internet at a discount through two consecutive government programs. "Millions could be left in the dark without broadband service for the very same reasons they didn't have it in the first place." The Emergency Broadband Benefit, or EBB, which was approved by then-President Donald Trump in late 2020 and launched in February 2021, provided a $50 subsidy. That's considered an accomplishment, said Ken Garnett, chief strategy officer at Cal.net, a small internet service provider that serves rural inland areas of California. As of January, about $6.1 billion of the funds had been claimed by broadband service providers as reimbursement for discounting their services and products.

New York City is hiring a leader to fight against residents' common enemy: rats. New York is the country's "second-rattiest" city, according to pest control company Orkin's most recent annual rankings. One performance actor, Jonothon Lyons, patrols the city's subway stations and park trash cans wearing a latex rat head. On Thursday, he tweeted an article about the position, writing: "If you have the drive, determination, and killer instinct needed to fight New York City's relentless rat population — then your dream job awaits." In October, the New York Sanitation Department announced that New Yorkers will be fined for putting trash on the curb before 8 p.m. starting in April 2023.

Rat sightings on the streets, in subways and even homes have jumped 71% over in the past two years, according to the city's sanitation department. "There’s NOTHING I hate more than rats," Mayor Eric Adams said in a tweet on Thursday in announcing the job posting. "If you have the drive, determination, and killer instinct needed to fight New York City’s relentless rat population - then your dream job awaits." The trash has encouraged the explosive growth of the city's rat population. Urban legend says there is one rat for each of New York City's 8.8 million residents.
Microsoft Corp. President Brad Smith says there are plenty of emerging opportunities for business leaders to take climate action. The executive who has helped spearhead the tech giant’s sustainability efforts says companies need to step up and do their part. I thought some of the European companies were present but not with senior leadership, not with as many senior leaders as a year ago. But I think if you look over the next 30 years, companies are going to locate manufacturing where there is green energy. It really does serve the world well and our individual companies well if we can standardize some aspects of this.

The data center industry is booming and eager for land, which can push up property prices in residential areas. The partnership aims to develop a proof-of-concept for how low-carbon fuel cells can provide green power for data centers. Fuel cells are recognized as a cleaner and quieter power solution that can reduce the strain on urban power grids. Fuel cells can help reduce the data center industry's reliance on natural gas and diesel-powered generators, he added. In the webinar, Summers emphasized how important it is that any solution for low-carbon fuel cells turns into an "open standard."
JAKARTA, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Indonesia plans to move the regulation, supervision and oversight of cryptocurrency investments to the Financial Service Authority (OJK) to better protect investors, its finance minister said on Thursday. The new plan, laid out by Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, is part of financial sector legislation that is being debated in parliament. Sri Mulyani said as of June, there were 15.1 million cryptocurrency investors in the country, an exponential rise from just 4 million in 2020. That compared with 9.1 million investors in the stock market as of June. The new bill would empower OJK to regulate and supervise "digital asset activities, including crypto assets and financial sector technology innovation," Sri Mulyani added.

SHANGHAI, Nov 2 (Reuters) - China will seek high-tech solutions to resolve its complex environmental challenges and make use of innovations in big data, biotech and artificial intelligence to tackle pollution, habitat loss and climate change, it said on Wednesday. The system will be backed by tax incentives and new "green technology banks", and China will also encourage enterprises and financial institutions to provide more support to innovative green technologies, the plan said. China has cut CO2 emissions per unit of economic growth by a third in the last decade, but overall volumes continue to rise. It promised more research to support large-scale demonstration projects and the use of aquifers and oil-bearing formations to contain sequestered CO2. The government will also support research into "deep decarbonisation technologies" in a variety of industrial sectors, including steel, cement, thermal power and agriculture, it said.
It's long been a dream of satellite communications visionaries, but bulky, specialized and typically expensive satellite phones fell short of mass appeal. While SpaceX has launched more than 3,000 first generation satellites so far, adding a direct-to-phone service will require thousands more. Private venture Lynk Global likewise aims to provide a cell tower in space from satellites, with plans for a constellation of several thousand in a few years. And while some build out satellite networks, other major players are eyeing Earth-bound innovations, with systems dependent on a specialized antenna in phones. In partnership with Globalstar , the feature allows users to send compressed text messages from iPhone 14s via satellites.
HERNDON, Va., Oct 21 (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Friday that domestic investments in semiconductors and research would help reverse a longstanding innovation deficit and increase the productive capacity of the U.S. economy. Yellen, speaking at a business incubator in the Washington, D.C. area's Dulles technology corridor, said that the U.S. lead in technology innovation has increasingly come under threat from China and other competitors. "Our government's failure to invest in innovation has had wide-ranging impacts on our long-term economic well-being. Mobilizing capital toward semiconductors and clean energy, through a recently enacted climate and drugs package and boosting research and development will raise the U.S. economy's aggregate production capacity. "And in turn, we are raising America's long-term economic outlook," Yellen said.
The term "technology" was referred to 40 times, up from 17 times in the report from the 2017 congress. watch nowThe Inflation Reduction Act signed into law by President Joe Biden in August includes historic investments to combat climate change. It may also open new avenues for fraud by expanding a program that has given federal authorities fits for years. That allowed them to rake in millions of dollars in incentives, even though they were producing very little fuel. Reining in fraudThe EPA says it has continued to beef up its enforcement as it learns more about implementing the program — and as incentives expand under the Inflation Reduction Act. "So, you're just spending money to take advantage of the Inflation Reduction Act."
Ford Motor Co.’s moves to overhaul its supply-chain leadership reflect the increasingly crucial role technology is playing as the development of electric vehicles is transforming the way cars are produced. Ford said the company is seeking to align operations from sourcing and assembly to distribution with a goal of transitioning to EVs. Ford also plans to name its first chief supply-chain officer. It had sold more than 36,500 electric vehicles year-to-date through August. Ford has been working on building closer ties with its suppliers for years, but pandemic-related supply-chain snarls have made it a more urgent priority, the company spokesman said.
