But Wells Fargo cautioned that the pop is detached from reality. However, the benefits of easing policy may not be truly felt until next year due to the uncertainty surrounding the presidential election, Wells said. The Wall Street bank said the S & P 500 is likely to be range bound in the coming months and it is already trading toward the top of the range. Wells sees the S & P 500 finishing 2024 at 5,200, 7% below Wednesday's closing level. Its target is one of the lowest forecasts among Wall Street strategists, who on average project the benchmark ending the year at 5,571, according to CNBC Pro's market strategist survey.

The market had become all but impenetrable after mortgage rates went from historic lows in 2020 to their highest levels in a generation last year. “And I think if we even go down to 5.9%, that would be really psychologically impactful to the housing market. The current 6.2% mortgage rate average is, of course, preferable to last year’s peak of 7.8% — a difference that could translate to hundreds of dollars in monthly payments. As my colleague Samantha Delouya wrote this week, a drop in mortgage rates could be a double-edged sword. “A further drop in mortgage rates could bring a surge of demand that makes it tougher to actually buy a house.”

JPMorgan Chase has created a new global role overseeing all junior bankers in an effort to better manage their workload after the death of a Bank of America associate in May forced Wall Street to examine how it treats its youngest employees. The firm named Ryland McClendon its global investment banking associate and analyst leader in a memo sent this month, CNBC has learned. The move shows how JPMorgan, the biggest American investment bank by revenue, is responding to the latest untimely death on Wall Street. Later that month, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon said his bank was examining what it could learn from the tragedy. Exceptions can be made for live deals, said the person, who declined to be identified speaking about the internal policy.

The Federal Reserve is poised to make its first interest rate cut in years on Wednesday. While mortgage rates are partly influenced by the Fed's policy, they are also tied to Treasury yields and the economy. Home loan rates have already started to come down in recent weeks, slightly induced in part by favorable economic data and indications the Fed could cut rates. As of Thursday, Sept. 12, the average 30-year fixed rate mortgage in the U.S. was 6.20%, according to Freddie Mac data via the Fed. "It's almost impossible to figure out what mortgage rates are going to do from week to week or month to month," Ostrowski said.

How to make the Fed rate cut work for you

In its August survey of car shoppers, a majority (64%) said a Fed rate cut likely would affect the timing of their purchase. But here’s the thing: Car loan rates are pretty high — the average is 7.1% for new cars and 11.3% for used cars, according to Edmunds. If you do buy a home this year and are considering buying down points to reduce your mortgage rate, crunch some numbers first, Diodato advised. That’s because you will pay thousands of dollars to buy down your mortgage rate now, and then thousands more in fees to refinance. What to do if you’re not near retirement: Reconsider how much money you’re keeping in cash or cash-equivalent investments.

The Fed was widely expected to lower short-term interest rates, but the 25 basis points versus 50 debate raged right up until the announcement. Mortgage rates: We talked last week during our September Monthly Meeting about how housing activity can start to pick up when mortgage rates fall off their cycle highs to somewhere in the range between 5% and 6.5%. However, what the data shows is how sensitive activity is to every dip in mortgage rates. The University of Tennessee is raising its season ticket prices by 10% across all its sports to prepare for athletes to start to get a cut of the school's sports revenue, according to an email sent to football season ticket holders on Tuesday. Tennessee is calling its hike a "talent fee," and said it "will help fund the proposed revenue share for our student-athletes," according to the email. Athletic departments have been gearing up for revenue sharing after a proposed settlement involving three cases the NCAA is named in. "As the collegiate model changes, we have to remain flexible," Tennessee Athletic Director Danny White said in a video included in the email. Star athletes have been able to sign big endorsement deals, but universities have not started direct revenue sharing, which would benefit more student-athletes.

Concerns about iPhone 16 lead times could send Apple shares lower in the near term, according to Morgan Stanley. This has led to the stock underperforming by an average of five points in the three months following an iPhone launch. "What will matter most over the next 10 days is the trajectory of iPhone 16 lead times, as historically iPhone lead times elongate through the first in-store availability date (Friday, September 20th) before gradually trending lower in the weeks thereafter," the analyst wrote in a Wednesday note to clients. "Therefore, a more sustained elongation in iPhone 16 lead times from today should be viewed positively, while a sharp reversal in iPhone 16 lead times after Friday would likely indicate a greater risk of negative iPhone build revisions." With 48 analysts covering the stock, 36 of them have a strong buy or buy rating, while 11 are neutral.

AdvertisementStill, Hamrick said within a day of the Fed's rate cuts, banks will likely adjust their prime lending rates, which will be noticed in credit-card rates "immediately." The Fed rate cuts indirectly affect mortgages, which are generally based on other interest rates that are loosely tied to the Fed funds rate. And when it comes to businesses, rate cuts will have a positive impact on their operations, making it cheaper to take out loans. Are you planning to make any big purchases now that the Fed has cut interest rates?

CNN —United Nations members voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to demand that Israel end its occupation of Palestinian territories within 12 months. Fourteen countries voted against, including the United States, Hungary, Israel, Argentina, Czechia, Fiji, Malawi, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Tonga, and Tuvalu. In its advisory opinion, the ICJ said Israel should end its occupation “as rapidly as possible.” The UN’s resolution gives a 12-month timeline. During the 1967 war, Israel captured the West Bank, East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and the Golan heights from neighboring Arab states. The Palestinians want the West Bank and Gaza for a future state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

But a series of data points showing worsening economic conditions has made some analysts believe a 0.5% cut is more likely — and perhaps even necessary. “We do not seek or welcome further cooling in labor market conditions,” Fed Chair Jay Powell said in a speech last month. “A (0.5%) cut is usually done in emergencies,” like the Covid-19 pandemic, said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s financial group. Mortgage interest rates have hit their lowest level since February 2023, while auto loan rates are also falling. A 0.5% cut would more directly affect rates tied to the fed funds rate, including credit cards, home equity lines of credit and small-business loans.

In recent weeks, more stocks are participating in the market's move to record or near-record highs. "Market breadth breakouts support the bullish case," Bank of America technical analyst Stephen Suttmeier said in a 29-page report Monday. Suttmeier relied on the advance/decline line , a measure of the number of stocks rising in price on a given day versus the number of stocks that have fallen in price, for his analysis. Advancers also beat decliners on the Nasdaq Stock Market by about 2,500 to 1,000, or a ratio of 2.5 to 1.
