Sleep supplements: Can they help me sleep?
  + stars: | 2024-04-25 | by ( Katia Hetter | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
Some 18% of American adults take a form of medication to help them sleep, including over-the-counter pills and prescription medications, according to a 2023 US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report. Some 6.3% said that they take sleep medications every day and 2.1% took medication most days. While medical treatments can help with sleep, are some forms more effective than others? Melatonin supplements are lab-made versions of this hormone. There is some evidence that melatonin supplements can help with jet lag.

Last year was called the year of Ozempic, though it was also a year of Ozempic backlash and Ozempic shortages, which could persist for years. Even so, we appear very far from a peak for GLP-1 drugs, like Ozempic and Wegovy, which are powered by a molecule called semaglutide, and Mounjaro, which uses its cousin tirzepatide. It seems possible to imagine a future in which almost everyone is taking some variety of GLP-1 drug, and with a pretty good reason to do so. Patients on Ozempic and Wegovy can lose 15 to 20 percent or more of their weight in a little over a year, and if they stay on the drugs, the weight tends to stay off. Semaglutide has been shown to eliminate or reduce the need for insulin among those with recent-onset Type 1 diabetes.

One man was charged with drunken driving after crashing his truck and spilling 11,000 salmon onto a highway in Oregon. This week, the man in Belgium was acquitted of a drunken driving offense — he wasn’t a boozer, the court found; his body was essentially making its own beer. It’s the latest turn in the spotlight for the strange disorder, which periodically appears in a flurry of headlines after a particularly odd or egregious case. Most incidents involve accusations of drunken driving, when people who have the disorder, known as A.B.S., get behind the wheel of a car believing they are sober. Reactions to such defenses often range from admiring to dismissive, but medical doctors and science have long backed up that the strange condition does exist.

Brussels, Belgium CNN —A Belgian man was acquitted of drunk driving on Monday because he suffers from auto-brewery syndrome (ABS), a rare condition whereby the body produces alcohol, his lawyer said. Anse Ghesquiere told Reuters that in “another unfortunate coincidence” her client works at a brewery, but three doctors who independently examined him confirmed he suffered from ABS. The Bruges police court, which acquitted the man, did not immediately reply to an email from Reuters. Lisa Florin, clinical biologist with Belgian hospital AZ Sint-Lucas, explained that people with the condition produce the same type of alcohol as the one in alcoholic drinks but that they generally feel less of its effects. She added that people are not born with ABS but can get it when they already suffer from another intestine-related condition.

Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical has several growth opportunities ahead that could lead its share price to boom over the next year, according to RBC Capital Markets. Analyst Luca Issi initiated research coverage of the pharmaceutical company, which develops treatments for rare and ultra-rare diseases, with an outperform rating and $77 price target. Ultragenyx is forecasting between $500 million and $530 million in revenue for 2024, driven by rare bone disease drug Crysvita, long-chain fatty acid oxidation disorder drug Dojolvi, as well as therapies Mepsevii and Evkeeza. The analyst is also looking ahead to Ultragenyx's treatments for Angelman syndrome, Glycogen storage disease type 1, or GSD1a, plus Wilson's disease as potential opportunities to drive up the stock. Wilson's disease is a rare genetic disorder that prevents the body from eliminating copper, which then leads it to accumulate in the liver, brain and other organs.

It is well-documented how imposter syndrome can hinder you in the workplace. The cognitive bias which describes the condition of not feeling successful internally when you appear to be thriving externally can cause anxiety, self-doubt, and depression. But there is another mental trap that can play just as significant of a role in your career, says Amanda Montell, author of "The Age of Magical Overthinking:" the overconfidence bias. "Out of all our cognitive biases, none has consequences more dramatic or dangerous than overconfidence bias," Montell says. "A bit of 'fake it till you make it' will probably serve you well.

Irritable bowel syndrome is one of the most common and perplexing conditions gastroenterologists treat. It affects an estimated 6 percent of people in the United States, with more women diagnosed than men, and causes symptoms so debilitating they can be hard to ignore, including abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and constipation. Scientists don’t know exactly what causes I.B.S., and there is no cure, so the condition is often difficult to manage. But a new study, published today in the journal The Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology, offers clues for how best to find relief. The telltale symptoms of I.B.S.

After Huey Lewis learned that a syndrome of the inner ear called Ménière’s disease had caused him significant hearing loss and left him unable to play or hear music, he faced the difficult task of having to tell his friends and peers. But their conversation proved to be an unexpected source of the pragmatic philosophy that Lewis built his career on. Around 7 p.m. — about two hours after we arrived — doctors explained our mother had an aortic dissection, a tear in the body's largest artery. She was rushed into emergency surgery, which lasted until 4 a.m.That night, Julio and I were just worried about whether our mother would make it. Watching our mom go through emergency surgery was terrible. We decided, with our doctor's blessing, to do the surgery on the same day. Trump's legal team is battling prosecutors over a gag order issued this week in his hush-money case. The article focused on how clients of Loren Merchan's company, Authentic Campaigns, used Trump's legal battles to fundraise. While not illegal, some critics argue Loren Merchan's role in promoting progressive politics creates an appearance of a conflict of interest for Judge Merchan. Trump's legal team last year filed a motion urging Judge Merchan to recuse himself due to his daughter's work, per The Times. Trump faced a $10,000 fine in October for violating the gag order in his New York civil fraud trial.

Last September, I drove to a protected wetland near my home in Oakland, Calif., walked to the end of a pier and started looking at birds. On that pier, for the first time, I had gone somewhere solely to watch birds. In some birding circles, people say that anyone who looks at birds is a birder — a kind, inclusive sentiment that also overlooks the forces that create and shape subcultures. I keep abreast of eBird’s rare bird alerts and have spent many days — some glorious, others frustrating — looking for said rare birds. I went out with experienced birders to learn how they move through a landscape and what cues they attend to.
