Joelinton scored Newcastle's second goal. Alex Dodd/CameraSport/Getty ImagesEvery attack seemed to yield a corner, an opportunity, a shot on goal and Newcastle continued to press while Tottenham’s defense continued to buckle. And then, barely two minutes after kickoff, there was another for Isak who made it five goals for the Tyneside club in 21 minutes. “It’s very embarrassing,” Lloris told Sky Sports afterwards. We didn’t show a good face and we could not match the performance of the Newcastle players.”
Not since the Montreal Canadiens beat the Los Angeles Kings in 1993 has the Stanley Cup been paraded through a Canadian city, an ego-deflating run of failure that has scarred a generation of fans. After winning the Stanley Cup in 1967, Maple Leafs defenceman Larry Hillman allegedly jinxed the team, saying they would not win it again until the club settled a contract dispute and paid him the $2,400 plus interest he believed he was owed. The Maple Leafs' big misfortune is playing in the same division as the Boston Bruins, who this season set NHL records for wins (65) and points (135), and the Tampa Bay Lightning, Stanley Cup finalists for the last three years. These two teams are once again hurdles that must be cleared on the way to a Stanley Cup. When the playoffs open on Monday, the Oilers will be the first of the Canadian teams to hit the ice, hosting the Los Angeles Kings in Game One of their best-of-seven series.

American skier Mikaela Shiffrin set the outright World Cup record for most career victories with 87 by winning a slalom Saturday. Saturday's result marked the American's sixth slalom win of the season and the record-extending 53rd career win in the discipline. The victory gave Shiffrin the outright record 12 years to the day after her first race on the World Cup, as a 15-year-old at a GS in Spindleruv Mlyn, Czech Republic. Shiffrin is set to compete in three more races this season at next week's World Cup Finals. At the Swedish lakeside resort, she earned her first World Cup win in 2012 and took slalom gold at the 2019 world championships to become the first skier to win the world title in one discipline four times in a row.

"Tonight I made my own legacy, I made my own legacy," Fury said, finally stepping out of the shadow of his illustrious boxing family. "All the way through these two and a half years, I had a dream, a vision, and no-one believed me. A short left hand downed Fury in the eighth and final round to shift the momentum in Paul's favour to set up a grandstand finish in which both men chased a knockout punch that never materialised. "All respect to Tommy, he won, don't judge me by my wins, judge me by my losses. I'll come back, I thought I deserve that rematch, it was a great fight, a close fight," Paul said in the ring as his boxing record slipped to six wins and one loss.
Feb 25 (Reuters) - Sweden's Armand Duplantis broke his own pole vault world record on Saturday, clearing 6.22 metres to add one centimetre to his previous mark at the World Athletics Indoor Tour Silver meeting in Clermont-Ferrand, France. He had barely touched the mat before a spray of sparklers went off and meet director Renaud Lavillenie, the Olympic champion in 2012, ran to embrace him. Duplantis had the competition won already when he cleared 6.01 metres on the first try, as Australian Kurtis Marschall finished second with a 5.91 metres leap while the Netherlands' Menno Vloon took third. Duplantis set the previous record on his way to winning gold at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, in July. 'Heartbreaking', Woodbridge bemoans Wimbledon doubles decision

MELBOURNE, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Nine-times Wimbledon men's doubles champion Todd Woodbridge said on Thursday it was "heartbreaking" to hear the All England Club had made the decision to cut the event to best-of-three sets rather than five from this year. "Five sets lets the best team win generally in that situation." Woodbridge won six Wimbledon men's doubles titles with compatriot Mark Woodforde in the duo known as the "Woodies" before teaming up with Swede Bjorkman for another three. American Mike Bryan, who with sibling Bob formed the most successful professional doubles team of all time, also bemoaned the decision. The 2022 Wimbledon men's doubles final took more than four hours to complete with Australian duo Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell beating Croatians Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic over five sets.
Greatness is in the eye of beholder, says Shiffrin

A day after capturing her 83rd career win in Kronplatz to surpass American compatriot Lindsey Vonn's record for the most women's World Cup victories, Shiffrin turned her sights on Stenmark's mark of 86. With three more wins Shiffrin would statistically become the most successful Alpine skier ever, but for the 27-year-old, the title of greatest will remain open to debate. "If you know anything about ski racing at all and even if they don't they know about Ingemar Stenmark. "I don't think that is something that I can surpass, I don't know if I ever will." The slalom is Shiffrin's signature event with 51 wins, the most for any Alpine skier in any discipline.
"Everybody is doing their job and my only job is to try to make some good turns and ski fast. Shiffrin burst onto the international racing scene as an 18-year-old in 2014 when she became the youngest slalom champion in Olympic history. "When people said you're going to break record, you're a 'phenom,' all these words that people used. After breaking fellow American Lindsey Vonn's record with a giant slalom win at the Italian resort of Kronplatz, Shiffrin is now just three wins away from matching the all-time record set by men's slalom great Ingemar Stenmark. Asked about potentially breaking Stenmark's record, she immediately turned to praise the Swede, whose 86 World Cup victories came in the 1970s and 1980s.

STOCKHOLM, Dec 6 (Reuters) - A Swedish court on Tuesday found a man guilty of murdering a woman and of planning to kill a senior politician at a festival in July, and ordered that he be taken into psychiatric care. The murder took place close to where Centre Party leader Annie Loof had been due to hold a news conference. The Gotland district court said the killer, Theodor Engstrom, had mapped Loof's agenda and was planning to murder her. The 33-year-old has said his intention was to hit back at the Swedish population," Judge Per Sundberg told a news conference. Engstrom pleaded guilty to murdering the psychiatrist Ing-Marie Wieselgren, but rejected charges related to Loof.

Never suffered so much on and off the pitch.”Back in 2016, Ibrahimović told CNN, "Being among many -- that's easy. “I think in my case I have this drive, I want to become better every day,” Ibrahimović told Anderson. “Money brings possibilities,” Ibrahimović told Anderson.
Videos show the moment two American veterans touched down on U.S. soil and were reunited with their families after being held hostage for three months by Russian forces. The two men were among ten foreign fighters captured by Russian forces in June after they traveled to Ukraine to aid in the war. They were held by Russian proxies in the contested Donbas region that remains at the center of the war. Dianna Shaw and Bunny Drueke, the aunt and mom of Drueke, said they were "thrilled" that he was finally free. The 10 foreign fighters included Drueke and Huynh, five British fighters, and one Moroccan, Swede and Croatian, according to the Saudi Ministry of Media.
Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich and Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman met in late August. Their meeting helped broker a Ukraine-Russia prisoner swap announced Thursday, Bloomberg reported. In a major prisoner swap announced Thursday, Ukraine handed over 55 captives, including pro-Russian tycoon Viktor Medvedchuk. The Saudi, Ukrainian, and Russian governments did not immediately respond to separate requests for comment from Insider on the prisoner swap Friday. The Sun newspaper reported Thursday that Abramovich was on a private jet used to transport the freed foreign prisoners from Russia to Saudi capital Riyadh.
Ten foreign fighters, including two Americans who joined the war effort in Ukraine before they were captured and held by Russian forces, were released Wednesday as part of an exchange of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the Saudi government had successfully negotiated the release of the foreign fighters and transferred them to Saudi Arabia, where they were "facilitating procedures for their safe return home." The 10 foreign fighters are five British fighters, two Americans, and one Moroccan, Swede and Croatian, according to the Saudi Ministry of Media. U.K. Prime Minister Liz Truss said in a tweet that she was elated to hear that the British nationals had been released. They are believed to be the first Americans to be captured during the war between Ukraine and Russia.
