He spent years spreading the lie that Barack Obama, America’s first Black president, was ineligible to hold office. But as he seeks the presidency for a third time, Trump is aiming to win over an unlikely constituency: Black voters. Political Cartoons View All 253 ImagesFor Biden, the biggest risk isn’t a dramatic move among Black voters toward Trump. When he won the New Hampshire primary this week, Sen. Tim Scott, the chamber’s only Black Republican, stood prominently behind him. And in contrast to past Democratic efforts, the Biden campaign has opted for an early engagement strategy with core constituencies like Black voters.

The administration appears to be struggling with finding Arab American and Muslim leaders who are willing to even meet with White House officials, and no Muslim or Arab American groups have endorsed Biden’s reelection bid. And I think that’s a pretty good descriptor of Arab American voters right now.”The ceasefire calls are coming from a diversity of progressive groups, including those representing Jewish voters, voters of color and young people – key parts of Biden’s winning 2020 coalition. In the last presidential election cycle, Biden received the support of several prominent Muslim American elected officials and community leaders. At least 146,620 of the 200,000 Muslim American voters in Michigan cast a ballot in the 2020 election cycle, according to an analysis by Emgage. Some Arab American and Muslim voters say even if Biden’s campaign ramps up their outreach, it will be too late.

CNN —President Joe Biden will win the New Hampshire primary, CNN projects, calming the anxieties of Democrats concerned that lagging enthusiasm over his campaign and the absence of his name from the ballot could add up to an embarrassing defeat. Those worries led Biden loyalists to launch an unofficial write-in campaign for the president, encouraging rank-and-file Democrats to go to the polls to make a show of support for the incumbent president. While the Biden campaign will welcome the result as a positive sign of enthusiasm for the 81-year-old’s reelection bid, the victory is just that: symbolic. As those worries grew, Biden surrogates began to promote a write-in campaign aimed at Granite State Democrats and the “undeclared” independents who wanted a say in the Democratic primary. The Biden campaign will be closely watching the race between Trump and Haley.

CNN —Meet Retro, a cloned rhesus monkey born on July 16, 2020. Retro is only the second species of primate that scientists have been able to clone successfully. He was not involved in the latest research but has collaborated with some members of the research team on other primate studies. However, a rhesus monkey was cloned in 1999 using what researchers consider a simpler cloning method. Cloned monkeys can be genetically engineered in complex ways that wild-type monkeys cannot; this has many implications for disease modeling.

Ames, Iowa CNN —Teresa Garman has attended decades worth of Iowa caucuses, but views Monday’s meeting as the most consequential. In interviews, Iowans expressed an array of opinions on Trump’s legal problems, from anger over what they say they believe is a “witch hunt,” echoing the former president’s criticism, to a desire to move on and focus on issues plaguing the country. Among those who were not considering the former president, 57% said Trump was controversial and 48% said they were concerned about his legal issues. “If Trump is the nominee, it’s going to be about January 6, legal issues, criminal trials,” DeSantis said during a CNN debate Wednesday. “I think that Vivek is, in a roundabout way, even better for Trump than Trump being in there,” Sherman said.

US President Biden arrives to board Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on December 20, 2023, as he departs for Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Biden could be courting Latino voters in Nevada while simultaneously negotiating a border funding bill that includes stricter immigration policies that are opposed by Hispanic leaders. The Biden campaign has argued that as important as immigration is, public polling and its own research show the economy as the top concern of Latino voters. In 2020, Biden carried both Nevada and Michigan, but by less than 3 percentage points. Only Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Arizona and Georgia were closer among states Biden carried.

Iowa caucuses: Do they still matter?

On the Democratic side, Barack Obama won the Iowa caucuses in 2008 and went on to win the White House. And Trump, although he’s the favorite in pre-caucus polling this year, lost the Iowa caucuses in 2016 to Cruz. Weren’t there some problems with the Iowa caucuses? This is the first time since 1972 that the Iowa caucuses will not be the first event on Democrats’ presidential nomination calendar. President Joe Biden, who placed fourth in the 2020 Iowa caucuses, pushed Democrats to change up the calendar.

Ron DeSantis head into their respective Iowa campaign events on Saturday eyeing different objectives that reflect their drastically different standings in the GOP primary. “Everybody will feel the love tomorrow, but the main focus will be Biden,” the senior Trump campaign aide told CNN on Friday. Trump’s campaign on Friday launched a six-figure broadcast TV ad buy in Iowa, according to the senior Trump campaign aide, which includes an ad focused on Biden. The Biden campaign seized on Trump’s comments, deploying high-profile surrogates and running a new ad on Thursday focused on health care and prescription drug costs. Trump is expected to participate in a prime-time town hall moderated by Fox News host Sean Hannity in Davenport, Iowa, the night before, according to the senior Trump campaign aide.

Review and Outlook: Minnesota Congressman Dean Phillips fears President Biden could lose to Donald Trump, and he’s right. Images: Reuters/AFP/Getty Images Composite: Mark KellyThe behavior of the front-running Democratic and Republican presidential campaigns is perplexing. Neither Joe Biden’s surrogates nor Donald Trump seems to know the value of restraint. First there’s the rhetorical hell Democrats rained down on Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips after he announced he’s running in the New Hampshire presidential primary. Mr. Phillips believes that Mr. Biden is too old and that Democrats will lose the White House unless they nominate a younger leader.

CNN —President Joe Biden is just as low in the White House’s internal polls as in any of the public ones. But while Biden advisers are dismissive of Rep. Dean Phillips’ primary challenge launched this week, they are also annoyed about it. Still, they remain confident that Biden is Democrats’ best option in 2024. Boyle told CNN this week that between the war in Israel and Gaza and the chaos of House Republicans electing their new speaker, he had not had “one conversation with anyone” about Phillips. Asked if he was worried about Phillips being a factor even back home in their state’s primary, Walz laughed.

In early May, as Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida prepared to run for president, about a dozen right-wing social media influencers gathered at his pollster’s home for cocktails and a poolside buffet. The guests all had large followings or successful podcasts and were already fans of the governor. But Mr. DeSantis’s team wanted to turn them into a battalion of on-message surrogates who could tangle with Donald J. Trump and his supporters online. For some, however, the gathering had the opposite effect, according to three attendees who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they did not want to damage their relationships with the governor or other Republican leaders.

The White House announced Wednesday night that President Joe Biden will be traveling to the battleground state of Arizona next Thursday — one day after the next GOP presidential primary debate — to deliver remarks about the “work we must do together to strengthen our democracy.”And Thursday morning, the Biden campaign is announcing its more direct efforts to bracket the GOP debate, with California Gov. According to campaign advisers, the Biden campaign will try to tie the GOP presidential hopefuls to the dysfunction among House Republicans in Washington ahead of a potential government shutdown. And it will emphasize “Latino political power” with prominent Spanish-speaking surrogates and a new TV and digital ad tied to Hispanic Heritage Month. On the debate stage, Republicans “will have to answer whether they’re on the side of the MAGA shutdown or with the American people,” as a campaign advisor put it. But now, as Mr. Trump’s lead in the primary has grown and hardened, the party has dropped Mr. DeSantis from such hypothetical matchups. And the Biden campaign’s polling on Republican candidates is now directed squarely at Mr. Trump, according to officials familiar with the surveys. The sharpened focus on Mr. Trump isn’t happening only behind the scenes. On Sunday, after Mr. Trump sought to muddy the waters on his position on abortion, the Biden operation and its surrogates pushed back with uncommon intensity. On Monday, Mr. Biden told donors at a New York fund-raiser that Mr. Trump was out to “destroy” American democracy, in some of his most forceful language so far about the implications of a second Trump term.

The impeachment inquiry comes at a fragile political moment for the president. An impeachment inquiry would give Republicans broad new powers to request documents and testimony about the Bidens. For now, the White House views the situation from a communications standpoint rather than as a legal issue. “Kevin McCarthy, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and MAGA Republicans just launched a beyond ridiculous impeachment inquiry into President Biden,” the fundraising email reads. An element of the White House strategy is keeping him focused on his governing duties, including plans to deliver what the White House has billed as a “major economic address” in Maryland on Thursday.

At home I ate a snack and watched Netflix on my computer until my husband arrived. Then I walked up to him for a hug, fell into his arms, and cried. Part of me hadn’t left the nursery, and it broke me, to be close and yet so far from parenthood. At 33, I have learned to let that go, the faceless woman I’ve carried around in my mind for so long. Trump's new object of hatred is the surface state — the state itself. The attack on the surface state began, of course, on January 6, when a violent mob, assembled and encouraged by Trump, descended on the Capitol to overturn a presidential election. AdvertisementAdvertisementToday, Trump's attacks on the surface state are accelerating. Maybe Trump has forgotten that less than three years ago, he was head of the surface state.
