German budget crisis will haunt economy for years
  + stars: | 2023-11-24 | by ( Pierre Briancon | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
LONDON, Nov 24 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The German government is working hard to demonstrate the foolishness of the country’s iron-clad ban on large budget deficits. The budget crisis will cripple the economy for years to come, for three reasons. The debt brake, which limits structural budget deficits to 0.35% of GDP, has only been suspended for this year’s budget. Public net investment has been negative for 20 years, Marcel Fratzscher, head of the German Institute for Economic Research, has pointed out. The country is not on the cusp of a debt crisis.

Dutch shock points to tremors in Europe’s core

Dutch far-right politician and leader of the PVV party, Geert Wilders speaks to the press following the exit poll and early results in the Dutch parliamentary elections, in The Hague, Netherlands November 22, 2023. The results add to the sense that Europe’s core is starting to rot. Even if Wilders drops his most radical ideas, mainstream conservatives, who won 24 seats, may have reservations about supporting his cause. The Dutch results, combined with German political turmoil, likely put paid to hopes of a deal on Europe’s fiscal rules by year-end. Europe’s core, the bloc’s lynchpin during the euro zone crisis, is now a shaky foundation.

Now for the first time this century, sales volumes at the big consumer goods manufacturers are falling. In the first nine months of the year, Kraft Heinz said the quantity of its sold items declined by nearly 6 percentage points year-on-year. That’s likely to allow Nestlé, Kraft Heinz and Unilever to see flat or modest increases in 2023 sales, LSEG data shows. Earlier this year, outgoing Kraft Heinz Chief Executive Miguel Patricio said the company lost market share to a branded competitor that spent more. Unilever, Nestlé and Kraft Heinz have all pointed to a slowing of price growth in the coming year.

The sale price was nearly 50% higher than last year’s high-stakes 2.5 billion euro capital increase, which cost taxpayers 1.6 billion euros. MILAN, Nov 16 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Stuttering consumer confidence is complicating CEO Jonathan Akeroyd’s attempts to revive Burberry (BRBY.L). Like-for-like retail sales in the quarter to end-September grew a dismal 1% at the UK maker of fancy trench coats, below analyst expectations of 4%. But brands attempting a revamp, like Burberry or Kering’s (PRTP.PA) star label Gucci, are likely to suffer more than rivals. Akeroyd sounded confident that new designer Daniel Lee’s first collection, which was launched in shops in September, will energise shoppers. It will also increase by 52% for floating offshore wind projects, from 116 pounds per MWh to 176 pounds per MWh. In AR6, offshore wind will also be given a separate funding pot in recognition of the high number of projects ready to participate. Sunak rolls the dice with Cameron resurrection
  + stars: | 2023-11-13 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, Nov 13 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Rishi Sunak's latest pivot is riskier than it might look. The British prime minister has appointed former leader David Cameron as foreign secretary, part of a reshuffle in which he sacked firebrand Home Secretary Suella Braverman. The move suggests Sunak may be looking to appeal to centrist voters ahead of next year’s national ballot, but that may also make his party more fragile. Cameron, who left parliament in 2016 after proposing a referendum on Brexit he then lost, isn’t an obvious choice for Sunak. Centrist voters may not forgive him for allowing an EU referendum and jumping ship shortly afterwards.

The disconnect may or may not cost Trump votes in 2024, but it’s hurting Republicans up and down the ballot. “Democrats will win in 2024 by making the election a choice, not just a referendum on Biden’s performance in office.

Profitable Klarna poses IPO valuation conundrum
  + stars: | 2023-11-09 | by ( Karen Kwok | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
Last year, Siemiatkowski raised money at a $6.7 billion equity value, or 85% below its 2021 price tag of $45.6 billion. The implied Klarna valuation, before netting out the company’s cash or debt, would be roughly $14 billion. It’s hard to see Klarna getting close to those multiples, if it’s valued like a bank, since the Swedish company is nowhere near as profitable. For Siemiatkowski, then, the key to gaining an IPO valuation uplift will be to convince investors that Klarna is a lender but not a bank. Klarna raised $800 million at a $6.7 billion valuation in July 2022.

Nor does it inspire the “five takeaways” treatment that juicy new memoirs by Britney Spears and Jada Pinkett Smith have. MY NAME IS BARBRA, by Barbra StreisandHello, enormous. Of course Barbra Streisand’s memoir, 10 years in the making if you don’t count the chapter she scribbled in longhand in the 1990s and then lost, was going to approach “Power Broker” proportions. For one thing, she is — fits of insecurity notwithstanding — a bona fide power broker: tearing down barriers to and between Broadway, Hollywood, the recording industry and Washington, D.C., like Robert Moses on a demolition bender. For another, as Streisand writes in “My Name Is Barbra,” a 970-page victory lap past all who ever doubted, diminished or dissed her, with lingering high fives for the many supporters, she does tend to agonize over the editing process.
