Climate disclosures would be made in annual filings companies make to the SEC, such as a Form 10-K, and in registration statements filed before an initial public offering. "I think climate disclosures have largely become table stakes for the investment community," said Lindsey Stewart, director of investment stewardship research at Morningstar. Current climate disclosures are 'uncommon'Ships on the Panama Canal on August 21, 2023. Shipping experts fear such events could become the new normal as rainfall shortfalls highlight climate risks. The SEC proposal outlined three tiers of emissions disclosures: Scopes 1, 2 and 3.

A recap: Villeneuve's "Dune" series (currently two films, potentially a third) is an adaptation of Frank Herbert's seminal novel. Worry about Austin Butler's shiny head. Alas, they’ve come a little too close to that with “The Regime,” a political satire that’s weird but not very good, other than savoring Winslet’s over-the-top antics as an autocratic leader. When the story begins, Vernham is already engaging in odd behavior that leaves her ministers (who assemble in “Dr. Matthias Shoenaerts and Kate Winslet in "Regime." Opinion | A Protest Against Biden Over the Gaza War
  + stars: | 2024-03-01 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Donald Trump has never indicated the slightest interest in or concern for the plight of the Palestinian people. His interests lie more in making deals to accrue personal power or make money. But my real concern is for freedom, for environmental stewardship, for American global leadership, for standing up to tyrants, for supporting experts who actually know how to govern. The price of ceding our nation’s leadership to Mr. Trump and the regressive religious and social forces that fuel his popularity is just too high. Keep fighting, keep protesting, but please don’t bring down the diverse, free society that enables us all to fight for what we believe.

CNN —In the early heyday of miniseries, “Shōgun” was the show of the year in 1980, and it might be again 44 years later. That chaos also creates the possibility of one regent emerging to consolidate power, and perhaps even gain the title of shōgun. Of course, in today’s heavily fragmented streaming environment “Shōgun” won’t be the massive ratings hit that it was back when there were three broadcast networks (and not much else), but those who wade into this dense history will be amply rewarded. “All men can be broken,” Toranaga muses at one point, with a quiet sense of menace and determination. If only all limited series could be half as good as “Shōgun.”“Shōgun” premieres February 27 on Hulu and at 10 p..m. ET the same day on FX.

Investor sentiment toward intermediate-term Treasury bonds may be changing. "So, they're looking to reposition the fixed-income portion of their portfolio to take advantage of where interest rates are likely to go next." It's a shift from last year when short-term bonds and money market funds saw large inflows. "Taking on some duration risk makes sense, but I wouldn't go too far out on the curve," he said. "The risk-return dynamics [of] getting too far out on the long end don't make a ton of sense to me."

Everything from banana peels and used coffee grounds to yard waste and soiled paper products like pizza boxes counts as organic waste. In Southern California, the nation’s largest facility to convert food waste into biogas has filed for bankruptcy because it’s not getting enough of the organic material. About three-quarters of communities are currently collecting organic waste from homes, said Rachel Machi Wagoner, CalRecycle’s director. CalRecycle hasn't tallied data yet on how much organic waste was diverted from landfills in 2023. Jurisdictions reported diverting 11.2 million tons (10.1 million metric tons) of organics at the end of 2022, up from 9.9 million tons (8.9 million metric tons) the prior year, Wagoner said.

Those surveys show Prabowo with 51.8% and 51.9% support, with Anies and Ganjar a whopping 27 and 31 points adrift respectively. To win outright, a candidate needs over 50% of votes and to secure 20% of the ballot in half of the country's provinces. "Jokowi as the decisive factor has been proven by the rising popularity of Prabowo," said Arya Fernandes of Indonesia's Center for Strategic and International Studies. "But whether or not Prabowo can win in one round, there are some other factors outside of Jokowi," he said, noting turnout would be crucial for Prabowo. Shachtman added that while he was stepping down as editor, he would be a contributing writer for the magazine. Shachtman also emphasized that under his stewardship, Rolling Stone would not be afraid to take aim at some of music’s biggest names. And while the economy usually comes out on top as the issue for most voters, there are doubts over whether even a good economy is enough for Joe Biden to win a second term. Certainly, the improving economy – and most importantly an inflation rate that is trending back to the Federal Reserve’s desired 2% annual target – should be an asset for Biden. “Obviously perceptions of Biden and Trump are largely baked in and have been for a long time” says Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion. “We’re playing at the margins at best.”For Democrats, running on a good economy will present its own challenges. Is the Senate Becoming the House?
  + stars: | 2024-02-09 | by ( Carl Hulse | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In 2008, as the nation faced a catastrophic financial crisis, the House did what it sometimes does — veered off the rails. It was the steadier Senate that had to step in and take over, find a way to approve the legislation and show the House how it was done. When the unruly House, with its treacherous two-year election cycle, melts down, the Senate is expected to step up, providing the adult supervision needed in the legislative world. The august Senate — at least on the Republican side — is becoming more like its chaotic counterpart across the Rotunda every day. The Senate Republican Conference, as it is known, is more publicly divided and feuding than at any time in recent memory, a rare development for a group led by Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the minority leader, who has always taken great pains to conceal internal disputes.

Even in a campaign in which Mr. Trump’s dominance has sapped the race of much of its drama, his win in Nevada felt particularly preordained. Embarrassingly for Ms. Haley, she was heavily outvoted in that election by a “None of These Candidates” option on the ballot. She was essentially unopposed, but even without Mr. Trump on the ballot, Republican voters rejected her. Ms. Haley still won the contest, but its results were effectively immaterial. Mr. McDonald also repeatedly pushed false claims of voter fraud that remain at the heart of Mr. Trump’s lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him.

Biden easily won the South Carolina Democratic primary and has given no indications he'd reverse course on 2024. The court's liberal majority agreed to hear the case, with the three conservative justices dissenting. Late last year, Wall Street investors had bet that a rate cut in March was a near-certainty. Collectively, the policymakers likely feel little urgency to start cutting rates, a point that Chair Jerome Powell may stress in a news conference Wednesday. The unemployment rate, at 3.7%, isn't far above a half-century low. Yet some cracks have begun to appear in the job market and, if they worsen, could spur the Fed to cut rates more quickly. Though the European Central Bank could cut rates as soon as April, many economists think that might not happen until June.

Ukraine Says It Uncovers Mass Fraud in Weapons Procurement
  + stars: | 2024-01-27 | by ( Jan. | At P.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +2 min
(Reuters) - Ukraine's SBU security service said on Saturday it had uncovered a corruption scheme in the purchase of arms by the country's military totalling the equivalent of about $40 million. The announcement of mass procurement fraud, confirmed by Ukraine's Defence Ministry, will have a huge resonance in a country beleaguered by Russia's nearly two-year-old invasion. The fight to root out endemic corruption remains a major issue as Ukraine presses its bid to secure membership in the European Union. "According to the investigation, former and current high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Defence and heads of affiliated companies are involved in the embezzlement." Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov was dismissed last September over various corruption cases despite enjoying a solid reputation in representing Ukraine in its discussions with Western allies.

Friday’s government report showed that prices rose just 0.2% from November to December, a pace broadly consistent with pre-pandemic levels and barely above the Fed's 2% annual target. Excluding volatile food and energy costs, prices also rose just 0.2% from month to month. And compared with a year earlier, so-called “core” prices climbed 2.9% in December — the smallest such increase since March 2021. Economists consider core prices a better gauge of the likely path of inflation. Solid consumer spending propelled the growth, capping a year that had begun with widespread expectations of a recession.

CNN —Jon Stewart is heading back to “The Daily Show.”The comedian, who during his 16-year run as host of the Comedy Central program established it as an entertainment and cultural force, will return to host the show each week on Mondays starting February 12, Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios announced Wednesday. After exiting “The Daily Show” in 2015, Stewart signed a deal with Apple to host a show for the technology company’s nascent streaming service. Convincing Stewart to return to “The Daily Show” is a major coup for Comedy Central. While Trevor Noah received critical acclaim for hosting program after Stewart exited, it never quite had the same cultural impact it did under Stewart’s stewardship. Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios, which is responsible for much of the streamer’s content library, said episodes with Stewart will be available on the platform the day after they air on Comedy Central.

New York CNN —The Los Angeles Times is in disarray.
