Louis Vuitton: The Olympics embody our ‘DNA’

And at next month’s upcoming Games, Louis Vuitton are hoping they too will become a hallmark of the same grand occasion. The Olympic and Paralympic medals will be housed in a Louis Vuitton trunk. Annie Leibovitz/Courtesy Louis VuittonLVMH – the luxury conglomerate that owns Louis Vuitton – spent €150 million ($163 million) on its sponsorship deal with the Olympics, Vogue reported citing sources, though calculating the precise returns on this investment is “difficult,” said Beccari. “We are very close to sport,” Beccari said, recalling the slogan “Victory travels in Louis Vuitton,” the fashion house used when one of its trunks housed the FIFA World Cup in 2010. From Louis VuittonWhile Louis Vuitton posted record profits last year and LVMH outperformed other luxury brands, the current economic environment with rising inflation leaving consumers with less disposable income poses challenges ahead, though Beccari downplayed such difficulties.

CNN —Canadian serial killer Robert Pickton - who was convicted of killing six women and confessed to killing dozens more - died after being attacked earlier this month by another inmate, prison authorities said. Pickton is one of the most notorious serial killers in Canadian history, bringing his victims to his pig farm and feeding their remains to his animals. Pickton had been operating a pig farm in the nearby city of Port Coquitlam, where police found the remains of 33 women. However, Pickton confessed to murdering 49 women when talking to an undercover police officer in a jail cell. The case became the largest serial killer investigation in Canada’s history and Pickton’s pig farm became the largest crime scene in Canadian history, with investigators taking 200,000 DNA samples.

Investor Steve Eisman of "The Big Short" fame expects Apple to capture epic gains from the artificial intelligence boom. "I think Apple is actually the hidden AI play," he told CNBC's " Fast Money " on Tuesday, less than 24 hours before chip giant Nvidia reports its fiscal first-quarter results. "When there will be apps that the consumer can use, they're going to want to use it on their phone," Eisman said. "I have a new iPhone, and I know for sure that when all those apps come on my phone, I'll need a new phone, and I'll need a new iPad and I'll need a new laptop." He suggests investors will have to be patient because the AI-driven apps need time to be developed.

Vistra Corp. has doubled over that period, while Constellation Energy is up nearly 62% and NextEra Energy has surged 34%. "This is not your old utility, where you just get a dividend and you're happy," Shahriar Pourreza, managing director of energy, power and utilities at Guggenheim Partners, told CNBC. The sector was oversold coming into 2024, with the market going too far in pricing in the impact of interest rates, Pourreza said. Power companies with deregulated assets are able to respond to market conditions more quickly than traditional utilities, he said. The tech sector is looking for clean energy to power data centers as they are simultaneously trying to limit their carbon footprints.

Opinion: Why Julian Assange’s fate matters
  + stars: | 2024-05-19 | by ( Opinion Alan Rusbridger | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
A determined American journalist, let’s call her Gillian, is sleuthing away at a story about India’s nuclear weapons program. Though Gillian is based in London, when she finally gets to publish her story, the Indian government is bent on revenge. Is Washington going to stand idly by and meekly accept the possibility of an American journalist languishing in an Indian jail? The clue is in the inverted commas around “journalist.” To my mind, Julian Assange is in some ways recognizably a journalist. However, to many journalists Assange is not a proper “journalist,” and they can’t really see what his fate has to do with theirs.

It was the upstart athletic brand that was making real inroads against Nike, the dominant name in the industry. People saw it as a company that actually could break through and take market share from Nike among the hardcore athletes,” Swartz said. String of controversiesThe period from 2016 onward is when “things really started to fall apart” at Under Armour, Swartz said. A bulk of Under Armour products are sold through sporting goods retailers and department stores, including Macy’s and Kohl’s, and online. The basketball superstar Curry, arguably the best shooter in history, famously signed with Under Armour instead of Nike in 2013.

CNBC's Jim Cramer hasn't lost hope in Under Armour 's turnaround, despite Thursday's poor quarterly results and a grim outlook. Quarterly revenue for Baltimore-based Under Armour declined 5% year over year to $1.3 billion, in line with Wall Street expectations. On those sales, the company delivered $7 million in net income or earnings per share of 2 cents. UA YTD mountain Under Armour stock performance year-to-date. Even though affluent shoppers helped drive the retailer's latest beat on quarterly results, former Walmart U.S. CEO Bill Simon warns they'll be hard to keep. His warning comes with Walmart stock hitting all-time highs going back to August 1972, when it began trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Last October on "Fast Money," Simon warned bargains were losing their magic because consumers were starting to buckle for the first time in a decade. "As long as there's inflation and those tail winds that come from particularly from food inflation, more traffic will come to the Walmart store," said Simon. "When inflation abates and service becomes more important than price, some of those tail winds will become headwinds," Simon said.
