MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced he has picked Miguel Angel Maciel to be his next energy minister, less than a year before the end of his six-year government, he wrote in a Monday post on social media. Maciel will replace Rocio Nahle, who served as energy chief and chair of the board of state-owned oil company Pemex since the beginning of Lopez Obrador's term in late 2018. Maciel has previously served as deputy energy minister, and Lopez Obrador stressed in his post on X that the petroleum engineer by training is trusted "due to his honesty and proven convictions in favor of national sovereignty." Nahle formally left her job as minister before the president's most important energy infrastructure project, the Olmeca oil refinery in his home state Tabasco, has come online. Lopez Obrador tasked Nahle with overseeing the project, which is running behind schedule and over budget.

Florida beat out New York to become the country's second-most-valuable housing market, Zillow said. Of the top six markets that gained the most value since the onset of COVID-19, four are in Florida. The market boom is driven by an influx in new residents putting more demand on the housing stock. Florida welcomed 655,000 new residents since the start of the pandemic, according to Census estimates reported by Insider in March. "But in the absence of that sorely-needed action, the Office of Gun Violence Prevention along with the rest of my Administration will continue to do everything it can to combat the epidemic of gun violence that is tearing our families, our communities, and our country apart,” he said. Democrats largely favor stricter gun laws as a way to reduce deaths from gun violence at schools and in cities across the country. Establishing a new office of gun violence prevention has long been on the wish list of anti-violence advocacy groups that were happy with Biden's record pushing for reforms but wanted the White House do more. White House adviser Stefanie Feldman, Biden's staff secretary, will serve as the director of the office, and gun safety advocates Greg Jackson and Rob Wilcox will join the White House as deputies. “We are so pleased that the Biden administration has officially created an Office of Gun Violence Prevention," said Kris Brown, president of Brady, an advocacy group.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has asked Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the first-ever federal office of gun violence prevention, which will seek to find ways around congressional inaction to stem rising violence. Harris, a former prosecutor and state attorney general, has years of experience on the issue and was the natural fit to lead the effort, White House officials said. “Throughout her career, the vice president has worked tirelessly to protect people from gun violence,” said Kristine Lucius, a domestic policy aide to Harris. Overall, stricter gun laws are desired by a majority of Americans, regardless of what the current gun laws are in their state. Among its first directives will be to ensure a federal gun safety law passed last year is being fully implemented.

Those charges center around a voting system breach in Coffee County, Georgia, a rural, Republican district that voted overwhelmingly for Trump in 2020. Willis’ indictment describes the breach, and Powell’s alleged involvement, as central to the broader conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia. Powell has also been identified by CNN as one of Trump’s un-indicted co-conspirators listed in Smith’s federal election indictment. New details about Smith’s ongoing investigation indicate federal prosecutors are scrutinizing a series of voting breaches following the 2020 election that state investigators have been probing for more than a year.
