The Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday that SpaceX is not yet clear for another test flight of its Starship Super Heavy launch vehicle. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk had claimed Tuesday, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) which he now owns, that "Starship is ready to launch, awaiting FAA license approval." However, his aerospace and defense company hasn't met the FAA's requirements to be able to fly again after an explosion in April 2023 during the first test flight of this vehicle. It also sparked an approximately 4-acre fire on state park land.

CNN —As Texas baked in record-breaking heat this summer and a growing drought pushed water levels down, a group of volunteers uncovered something sort of magnificent: new giant dinosaur tracks that are believed to be from around 110 million years ago. Paul Baker, the retail manager at Dinosaur Valley State Park, told CNN he has “never seen this many dinosaur tracks” before. It is a hotspot for dinosaur enthusiasts and tourists who typically flock the now-dry Paluxy River to fish, swim and kayak. Paul BakerThe Paluxy River usually draws tourists for fishing, swimming and kayaking, but has been bone dry in this summer's growing drought. Baker was raised in Dinosaur Valley State Park – his father was a park manager for 30 years – and now operates several businesses, including the park’s gift shop.

REUTERS/Amr Alfiky Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Sept 1 (Reuters) - Credit rating agency Moody's raised its 2023 U.S. economic growth forecast on Friday but cut its estimate next year for China, saying that while the risk of a recession had fallen in the United States, China's challenges were mounting. "We have raised our growth forecast for the United States' economy to 1.9% in 2023 from 1.1% in our May outlook, acknowledging the strong underlying economic momentum," Moody's said in a report. The firm, now the only big three agency to have a top notch triple A rating for the U.S. following Fitch's downgrade last month, kept its 2024 growth forecast at 1%, saying that high interest rates would act as a brake on the economy. Moody's kept its growth projection for this year at 5% but cut its 2024 forecast to 4.0% from 4.5% previously. "We believe that low consumer confidence is holding back household spending, and economic and policy uncertainty will continue to weigh on business decisions".

Before I could make the leap into van life, I'd spent six years dreaming about it. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do as a civilian — but I did still have my dream of van life. The environmental damage caused by a SpaceX rocket explosion in April shocked officials. Bloomberg reported that seven bobwhite quail eggs and a group of blue land crabs were incinerated. Concrete chunks left massive craters around the launch site and ignited a fire covering 3.5 acres. That fire incinerated seven bobwhite quail eggs and a "collection of blue land crabs," while also leaving several craters a foot deep across tidal flats, per Bloomberg. Wildlife officials also questioned why SpaceX did not use the same flame-suppression technology that's regarded as the best available, Bloomberg reported.

A THUNDERSTORM spoiled my plan to head straight for the beach after dropping my bags in my room at the Lodge at Gulf State Park. Instead, I grabbed a book and sat alongside other hotel guests on a porch facing the Gulf of Mexico. Soon I was paying more attention to the slow-moving, violet clouds than my reading. When rain blew on us, we scooted back our rocking chairs and enjoyed the show.

One Morning in Maine, 225 People Went to the Library

It was a beach day, by Maine standards — slightly overcast and moderately balmy, with a hint of balsam in the air. But on a peak-summer morning in July, 225 people steered clear of state parks and went to Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick instead. They were young and old, in strollers and on walkers and strutting the latest technical sandals. They wore pigtails, baby slings, ironic T-shirts, a head scarf, a lobster hat, a crown, a tiara and halos of white hair. As “Sal” McCloskey, now 78, settled into an armchair at the front of Morrell Reading Room, a hush fell over the undulating sea of children at her feet.

SpaceX is adding changes to Starship's launchpad and rocket ahead of its next launch. SpaceX is now gearing up for a second launch, which CEO Musk has predicted could happen by end of August. Here are two crucial changes the firm has made to its Starship launch system, and why it hopes it'll keep the rocket from failing. Because of this change to the launch, SpaceX had to add a "vented interstage and heat shield" to protect the booster. The CEO is now vying for a second launch window by the end of August, he said in June.

Had I been a hunter instead of a photographer, I wouldn’t have had time to fire off a shot. But nearly 100 brown bears (a bigger, coastal version of the grizzly bear) several hundred miles away were not so lucky. They were slaughtered by state game workers, shot from the air in and around Wood-Tikchik State Park in southwestern Alaska. At a board meeting where the decision was made, state wildlife biologists presented data that showed that the state’s predator control program involving wolves had been ineffective in bolstering the herd. But the board nonetheless voted to extend the wolf control program and add bears to the effort.

Reviving the Redwoods

The redwoods in this area are much larger in diameter and far more robust, the understory greener and more diverse. “In the untreated forest, trees are not vigorous and are susceptible to stressors — fire, wind and bugs,” said Jason Teraoka, the forester. “But here with more diameter growth and crown growth, it’s a much more vigorous forest and less susceptible to disturbance.”The thinned forest is part of a project called Redwoods Rising, which is aimed at creating old growth redwood forests for the future. Carried out by Redwood National and State Parks and Save the Redwoods League, a nonprofit, crews are using chain saws and logging equipment and planning prescribed fires, to mimic the traits of a young healthy redwood forest and undo the damage from decades of unbridled logging and indiscriminate reseeding. Treated forest stands, or communities of similar trees like this, researchers believe, will grow into the classic cathedral-like groves of redwoods over the next few centuries.

The Fairport Harbor West Lighthouse is located in Ohio and overlooks Lake Erie. The Fairport Harbor West Lighthouse in Ohio became available at auction and Consaul started bidding in 2009. Since buying the lighthouse, Consaul estimates she has spent over $300,000 renovating it. Other than the extensive work the lighthouse needed, Consaul says her biggest challenge so far is that the lighthouse is completely off the grid. Safety officials at one New York beach are ramping up the use of drones to try to prevent potentially dangerous interactions between humans and sharks. Lifeguards and New York State Park Police officers at Jones Beach — a state park that stretches 6.5 miles along the Southern coast of Long Island and sees six million visitors a year — are using the technology to monitor the waters off the shore. When they spot sharks or unusual sea life activity, they can warn swimmers to stay on the beach. The next day, lifeguards at Jones Beach closed the water three times after possible shark sightings, two of which were made with drones. A view of the site of the Catoctin Furnace, an iron forge where enslaved people of African descent once worked, in Cunningham Falls State Park in Maryland, U.S., in this undated photograph. The site now also is providing unique insight into African American history thanks to research involving DNA obtained from the remains of 27 individuals buried in a cemetery for enslaved people at Catoctin Furnace. For African American and United States history, revealing these stories and family legacies is important to understanding and acknowledging who we are, where we came from and how we are connected to each other today," Bruwelheide added. Enslaved people of African descent were forced to work in agricultural, industrial and domestic settings in parts of the United States. A Deadly Summer for Hikers in the Southwest
  + stars: | 2023-08-01 | by ( Jacey Fortin | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
For hikers in the American Southwest, this searing hot summer has been an exceptionally dangerous one. A woman never finished her trek along a remote trail last month in the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Altogether, national and state parks have reported at least seven possible heat-related deaths so far this summer, as a brutal heat wave has baked the Southwest. Data on hiking fatalities is spotty, and officials caution that causes for the recent deaths have not been confirmed. But the deaths would appear to be the most for the months of June and July in at least a decade.

CNN —A man’s body was found inside a plastic barrel at a beach in Malibu, California, after a lifeguard spotted the unusual item floating offshore, officials announced. The body was inside a 55-liter black drum, which was discovered at Malibu Lagoon State Beach, Lieutenant Hugo Reynaga with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Monday. Homicide investigators are examining the circumstances surround the death of the man, who was identified as a Black adult, the sheriff’s department said in a release. A state park maintenance worker first spotted the large drum floating in the lagoon around 3 p.m. Sunday, Reynaga said. Around 10 a.m. Monday, the lifeguard swam out to get the barrel from the lagoon and opened it on shore, finding a “non-responsive” person inside, the lieutenant said.

Watching weary day hikers start the long uphill hike from Phantom Ranch, a ranger station at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, Jeff Schwartz has learned to look for telltale warning signs. “They’ve got the salt stains all over their shirt, and clearly have a day pack on, and you’re like, ‘let’s prevent some search and rescue by talking with these folks,’” said Mr. Schwartz, a paramedic and backcountry park ranger who has worked at Grand Canyon National Park since 2012. After a dozen summers on the trail, he also knows what to offer: a comfortable seat in the shade of the ranger’s office, maybe something salty to eat. An unplanned overnight at the Ranch may be in order for those in truly dire straits. At least seven have died in recent weeks from apparent heat-related causes — including one at the Grand Canyon, one in Death Valley and two at a state park in Nevada — as extreme temperatures this year have met increased visitation at national and state parks.

The downside of car camping is the fact that these campgrounds are often packed to the rafters with other campers. While RV camping may seem like a recent phenomenon, it’s actually been around for more than 100 years. Among the websites that list RV campgrounds and post very useful user ratings are RVshare/Hipcamp, RV Life and Good Sam. Other than maybe car camping, it requires the least expense and equipment. The U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management has set aside areas for free camping in national forests, national grasslands and BLM-managed lands.

Who Gets to Wear G-Strings Now?
  + stars: | 2023-07-16 | by ( Mya Guarnieri | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The court ruled on G-strings in the case of Barnes v. Glen Theatre Inc. in 1991 and in City of Erie v. Pap’s A.M. in 2000. In both cases, exotic dancers who wanted to completely strip down argued that laws requiring them to wear G-strings infringed on their First Amendment rights. In recent years, a number of North Carolina municipalities have loosened restrictions and enforcement of nudity laws to accommodate an increase in scantily clad beachgoers. Thong bikinis are legal in most parts of the United States, but laws vary by city and county. In Florida, for example, thong swimwear is prohibited in state parks, including some portions of the state’s beaches.
