CNN —A federal judge formally ordered Donald Trump to pay $83.3 million to E. Jean Carroll, endorsing the jury’s verdict from the defamation trial last month. This will be the second judgment Carroll has won against Trump. Last May, Trump appealed the verdict to the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals, which has not yet heard arguments. In the current case, a jury found Carroll should receive $83.3 million in damages to repair her reputation, to compensate her, and to punish Trump. The judge found that the prior verdict should carry over to statements at issue in the last trial since they were similar.

She will technically win the contest anyway, as state election law says that “only votes cast for the named candidates shall be counted.” But the confounding result denied her even a symbolic victory. Mr. Trump needled Ms. Haley for her performance on social media, calling the result a “bad night” for her. In a Trump campaign email, Steven Cheung, a spokesman, called it “brutal” and contended that the Haley campaign acknowledged it had “intentionally disrespected the people of Nevada” by refusing to campaign there. Ms. Haley cast her party as mired in the same disorder that surrounds the man who has remade it in his image. Nevertheless, onstage in Los Angeles, Ms. Haley told the audience she wasn’t going anywhere.

But this week, a Delaware state judge handed down a message that Musk and other powerful men in America seldom hear: Nope. The outcome of Musk’s pay package dispute is the latest instance of a towering, brash business leader getting put in his place by the one institution powerful enough to do so: US courts. Kathaleen McCormick struck down Elon Musk’s 2018 Tesla pay package after an investor challenged it as excessive. Kathleen Flynn/ReutersAmong the threads connecting Musk, Trump and McMahon is a history of evading negative consequences. “And if that’s the case, let that be a message to other people: The litigation system actually does work.”The pay package dispute wasn’t McCormick’s first rodeo with Musk.

She didn’t mind the church part, but she did mind that her coach wasn’t giving her any playing time. She was starting to think that she might as well drop out of college and start working her way toward her dream career as a real estate agent. That led her, last spring, to a conversation with a coach who was starting a softball team at a school on the Gulf Coast of Florida. The coach was a young woman, and Totten thought she sounded sane and real and caring. The school was small, but it was a public honors college for top students, which also appealed to her.

But Republicans — who have joined Mr. Trump in spending the past four years baselessly attacking mail-in voting as unsecure — objected to the change. So the Nevada Republican Party decided to organize caucuses instead. Mr. Trump and the rest of the candidates who have since dropped out chose the party-run caucuses. Mr. Trump will collect the state’s delegates, but that won’t say anything about the competition between them, because no voter will have the option to choose between them. Recently, while browsing in the Museum of Modern Art store in New York, I came across a tote bag with the inscription, “You are no longer the same after experiencing art.” It’s a nice sentiment, I thought, but is it true? Or to be more specific: Does consuming art, music, literature and the rest of what we call culture make you a better person? Ages ago, Aristotle thought it did, but these days a lot of people seem to doubt it. Since the early 2000s, fewer and fewer people say that they visit art museums and galleries, go to see plays or attend classical music concerts, opera or ballet. Thanks to Hurston she had a new way to see, a deeper way to connect to her own heritage.

The problem with this approach is that most Republican voters do not want an alternative to Trump; they overwhelmingly back him. At least that’s what the Nikki Haley campaign said after finishing second to former President Donald Trump in the New Hampshire primaries on Tuesday. Democratic nominee Bill Clinton and third-party candidate Ross Perot exploited that division in the Republican Party against Bush in the fall. The Republican Party is united behind Trump, and with optimal conditions for an opponent like Haley, Trump was still unstoppable. “Democrats deserve options, and it’s not clear at all that President Biden can beat Donald Trump.

Anya Firestone’s job as a luxury tour guide in Paris has brought her to many rarefied corners of the city. But only recently did she do something that countless locals and visitors have done over the last 130 years: Book a reservation at Maxim’s, the storied French restaurant that opened in 1893 and has counted Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Margrethe II of Denmark, Jean Cocteau, Jane Birkin and Man Ray among its patrons. “The place was packed,” Ms. Firestone, 35, said of the night she ate there in late November. She was not alone in that perception. “Many people, even most, did not realize it was open as a restaurant,” said Pierre Pelegry, a director at Maxim’s who has worked there for 27 years and was hired by Pierre Cardin, the French fashion designer, after he bought the restaurant in 1981.

How the three-year cruise fell apart

CNN —In April 2023, George Fox was gearing up for the adventure of a lifetime: a three-year cruise taking him around the world. The high hopes and eventual failure of the Life at Sea cruise reads a bit like a Greek tragedy. When Miray objected, he resigned, along with much of his team, and told passengers the cruise was off. When the cruise was canceled in November, Bayramoğlu told passengers that only 111 cabins were booked. On October 24, Miray’s PR spokesperson told CNN that the departure date had been moved to November 30.

Tel Aviv CNN —The Israeli military has desecrated at least 16 cemeteries in its ground offensive in Gaza, a CNN investigation has found, leaving gravestones ruined, soil upturned, and, in some cases, bodies unearthed. CNN’s analysis of satellite imagery and videos showed that Israeli bulldozers turned multiple cemeteries into staging grounds, leveling large swaths and erecting berms to fortify their positions. For those Ukrainian players competing at the Australian Open in Melbourne, it’s a gesture that has more meaning than ever. And in another, she’s wearing just socks and underwear with no top — again covering her breasts with her arms, but, like FKA twigs, also exposing the side of her leg, torso, arm and breast; unlike FKA twigs, she’s sitting rounded over, in a less stereotypically powerful, and more passive-appearing, position. In interviews, Iowans expressed an array of opinions on Trump’s legal problems, from anger over what they say they believe is a “witch hunt,” echoing the former president’s criticism, to a desire to move on and focus on issues plaguing the country.
