And it is about to get even bigger. The fast food giant said it plans to open 1,900 new restaurants in 2023. Almost half of those locations will be in China. But the chain has faced headwinds along the way including lockdowns due to Covid-19 and competition from rivals like KFC.

McDonald's is one of the world's largest restaurant chains, drawing 60 million customers daily at more than 40,000 locations worldwide. The fast food giant plans to open 1,900 new restaurants this year, almost half of them in China, McDonald's CFO Ian Borden told analysts on an earnings call in January. McDonald's got its start in China in the early '90s. Today, the chain has more than 4,500 restaurants in mainland China and Hong Kong with considerable room for growth. Even still, China is McDonald's second-largest market by store count, behind the U.S.

Struggling to find workers and eager to relieve staff from boring, repetitive tasks, fast-food restaurant chains are adding robots to their kitchens. Using artificial intelligence, computer vision technology and a mechanical arm, Miso Robotics' Flippy 2 has been deployed to Chipotle, White Castle and Wing Zone. White Castle said it plans to add 100 Flippy robots to work the fry station at its restaurants nationwide. Automation could save U.S. fast-food restaurants more than $12 billion in annual wages, the group said. CNBC got a behind-the-scenes look at restaurant robot maker Miso Robotics to find out.

An estimated 48 million Americans have some form of hearing difficulty, according to the Hearing Loss Association of America. A typical pair of hearing aids in the U.S. goes for between $2,000 and $8,000, including fitting fees and follow-up services. But a recent ruling by the Food and Drug Administration allowing for the sale of over-the-counter hearing aids could improve access for millions. Stavros Basseas, co-founder and chief technology officer of manufacturer Sound World Solutions, said, "The hope is that in this country the new category will have a tremendous effect in lowering the price, not only for the over-the-counter hearing aids, which will be low, but for also the traditional hearing aids." So why are hearing aids so costly, and what impact will over-the-counter devices have on people with impaired hearing?
