Prepare for volatility in the semiconductor industry after an exuberant 2023 that saw prices surge and left many companies with lofty valuations. "Higher valuations in my experience lead to higher investor expectations and those higher investor expectations typically lead to higher volatility," said Michael Brenner of FBB Capital Partners . Computer chip stocks surged in 2023, largely due to enthusiasm surrounding the use of artificial intelligence and the need for advanced semiconductors. ASML sells lithography machines that are a key part of the chip manufacturing process. The NXT:2050i and NXT:2100i, which are caught up in the Dutch government's latest export curbs, are DUV lithography machines. The revocation of the shipping license comes after the U.S. government tightened export controls on advanced semiconductors and chipmaking tools to China in October, building on previous rules. ASML said it does not expect the revocation of its export license of U.S. export controls "to have a material impact on our financial outlook for 2023." The company has previously said it expects fourth-quarter net sales of between 6.7 billion euros and 7.1 billion euros ($7.34 billion and 7.78 billion).

ASML Chief Executive Peter Wennink will retire at the end of his term next April to be replaced by company veteran Christophe Fouquet, the Dutch semiconductor equipment manufacturer said on Thursday. Fouquet, who has been with ASML for 15 years, has previously overseen its extreme ultraviolet (EUV) product lines, which now account for about half of the company's sales. EUV technology, was developed and commercialised by ASML, and is used by only a handful of manufacturers to make advanced chips. "Christophe's career is a clear example of natural evolution throughout the company," Wennink said. The company also announced that Chief Technology Officer Martin van den Brink will retire on April 24.

Dutch voters have gone to the polls today in one of the most tightly contested general elections in recent years. Next stepsForming a coalition in the 150-seat Dutch parliament is typically lengthy and difficult, even where the victor is not a political pariah. There is still no guarantee Wilders will become the new prime minister, even with his Freedom Party (PVV)'s 37 seats. On fiscal policy, Wilders' party has a "clear populist" bent, said Ester Barendregt, chief economist at Rabobank. Certainly one wish of Geert Wilders is to pay less to Europe.

Reuters reported Applied Materials is under U.S. criminal investigation for potentially evading export restrictions on China's top chipmaker SMIC. Santa Clara, California-based Applied Materials, expects first-quarter revenue of $6.47 billion, plus or minus $400 million, higher than analysts' estimates of $6.37 billion, according to LSEG data. Companies focusing on generative AI tools this year has also led to an increase in spending for Applied Materials' equipment. Rival Lam Research (LRCX.O) last month forecast revenue below estimates due to weak memory chip demand, while KLA (KLAC.O) forecast revenue above expectations on growing adoption of AI tools.

REUTERS/Florence Lo/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Chinese companies are buying up U.S. chipmaking equipment to make advanced semiconductors, despite a raft of new export curbs aimed at thwarting advances in the country's semiconductor industry, a congressional report said on Tuesday. China watchers had theorized that SMIC could have made the chip with equipment obtained prior to the October 2022 rules, but it had other options for obtaining the equipment from oversees, the report shows. The United States managed to plug a key loophole in its efforts to stymie China's access to advanced chipmaking tools by convincing allies Japan and the Netherlands, with similarly robust chipmaking equipment industries, to announce their own restrictions on exports of the coveted technology. China's imports of semiconductor equipment from all countries totaled $13.8 billion (RMB 100 billion) over the first eight months of 2023, it added.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday said last week's rally may not be a temporary change to the market. "I'm not going to throw cold water on the reversal in the bond market that lowered long-term yields dramatically and repulsed the selling hoard at the five and change level on the thirty-year." Like many rallies, Cramer said last week's market gains were "hard-fought victories" for the bulls that were not expected to occur in an over-sold market where the "gloom was palpable." After last week's Federal Reserve meeting, where rates held steady, Cramer suggested it's possible there may not be any more rate hikes in the next few months. However, he admitted that the thesis is contingent on whether any major component in inflation, like real estate prices, accelerates.

Oct 24 (Reuters) - Semiconductor equipment manufacturer ASM International (ASMI.AS) beat its third quarter revenue guidance Tuesday, with a strong contribution from the Chinese market. The Dutch group reported 622.3 million euros ($659.14 million) in revenue during the quarter, against an initial target of between 580 and 620 million euros. ASMI's third quarter revenue is up from 609.8 million euros last year and above the 601.92 million euros expected by analysts, according to LSEG data. New orders came in at 627.4 million euros, below last year's 675.5 million euros but near the top-end of the group's guidance for the quarter. Fellow Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASML Holding NV (ASML.AS) last week reported lower-than-expected orders in the third quarter and warned of flat sales in 2024.

Washington's tightened grip on artificial intelligence chip sales to China could have long-term implications for Nvidia , 2023's famed AI darling. Through Wednesday's close, Nvidia, the dominant AI player, had lost 7% this week, while Advanced Micro Devices and Marvell Technology slumped more than 2%. What it means for Nvidia Nvidia said in an SEC filing this week that the latest government curbs could hinder its new product development timeline, and a handful of chip models. The major aim of the latest U.S. restrictions is to prevent China from harnessing advanced semiconductor chips to strengthen its military. To be sure, Nvidia isn't the only company slated to feel the pressure from the latest export curbs.

Domestic equipment manufacturers, such as toolmaker Naura (002371.SZ) and etching equipment maker AMEC, are winning a much higher proportion of tenders from Chinese foundries than in previous years, as chipmakers race to replace foreign-made equipment with domestically made alternatives, research showed. "There is definitely huge progress happening in the Chinese semiconductor equipment space, as reflected in the strong revenue growth metrics," he said. The Huatai Securities report revealed that for the first eight months of 2023, only one tender for lithography equipment was awarded to a Chinese company, out of many bids. "Local players still lack capability to supply a full set of equipment, such as EUV," said Nori Chiou, investment director at White Oak Capital, saying Chinese manufacturers are focused on covering mature node equipment. ASML warns of flat 2024 sales as chipmakers slow orders

The company reported net profit of 1.9 billion euros ($2.01 billion) for the three months ended Sept. 30, in line with analyst expectations. Net bookings were 2.6 billion euros, compared with third quarter sales of 6.7 billion euros. "Consensus expectations still call for 7% sales growth next year, which should come down today," Stifel analysts said in a note. Dassen said ASML still had an order backlog of 35 billion euros and a strong 2025 would follow an uncertain 2024, given its customers' expansion plans in Asia, the United States and Europe. Dassen said the company did not expect any financial impact from an updated U.S. policy announced Tuesday restricting sales of semiconductor equipment to China.
