Israeli authorities have asked the 30,000 inhabitants of Sderot, an Israeli city near the Gaza Strip, to evacuate by Monday, according to the city’s Facebook page. The rare step taken comes as the Israeli army is gearing up for a land invasion in Gaza, following the Oct. 7 surprise attack by Hamas militants in nearby rural communities in Israel. The municipality told residents they could relocate in designated hotels in Eilat, a town by the Red Sea, as well as Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

And as forces continue to mass near the border, Israeli officials continue to signal that this is just the beginning. It's been nearly a decade since Israel last invaded Gaza, giving Hamas ample time to prepare. In Gaza, Israeli forces may be vulnerable to traps, surprise guerrilla warfare tactics, and well-armed militants who have the advantage of defending the complex terrain. Israel, nonetheless, retains strong international support from the US in its fight with Hamas, which the US regards as a terrorist organization.

The city of Sderot, a mile from Gaza, was hit on Saturday by a brutal terrorist attack by Palestinian gunmen. An analysis of available footage shows an estimated 20 civilians were killed across multiple locations, though the toll could climb. Officials said that about a dozen soldiers, firefighters and police had also been killed. The footage shows the indiscriminate ways gunmen killed civilians and how Israeli police and military responded. Two more were killed in a van and a car around the corner and 100 yards from there.

By Maayan LubellKFAR AZA, Israel (Reuters) - Bodies of Israeli residents and Hamas militants lay out in the grounds of the Kfar Aza kibbutz among burned out houses, strewn furniture and torched cars, as Israeli soldiers went from house to house to take away the dead. Israeli Defence Forces took the foreign press through the site on Tuesday, which was the one of the hardest hit areas when Hamas militants attacked Israel from the Gaza Strip. The stench of bodies was heavy in the air as reporters walked the paths of the kibbutz. The militants went on a rampage, killing hundreds of Israelis and taking dozens hostage in places like Kfar Aza, near Sderot. At least 770 Gazans have since been killed in Israeli strikes, according to Gaza officials, while whole districts in Gaza have been flattened.
