How to manage your boss
  + stars: | 2024-02-09 | by ( Henry Blodget | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +8 min
So you have to manage your boss. And, to do that — and to be sure that your boss is actually happy and not just "being nice" — you will likely have to manage your boss. (This is not necessarily because they don't want to be — but because being a great boss is hard.) All of this means: You don't want to leave managing your job and career to your boss, because your boss has other priorities and might not be great at it. Despite your efforts to understand and deliver what your boss wants, your boss may be so flaky that they just can't set and stick to realistic goals.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Coming off back-to-back losing seasons, Florida coach Billy Napier needed to make changes. Napier hired a “head coach of the defense,” an “expert in the special teams space” and a new strength and conditioning coordinator during the past two months. Napier and the Gators are counting on all the new faces making a huge difference this fall. Napier could give up play-calling duties for the first time in seven seasons as a head coach. His offense was inconsistent, his defense was historically woeful and his special teams units provided more head-scratching moments than game-changing momentum.

The feeling of being included like a grown-up, of partaking in something that I only equated with a fun time, took over. Alcohol was my companionAlcohol was my constant companion and my chemical courage throughout college and my early 20s. In turn, I developed an understanding that sobriety is so much more than just not drinking. Not drinking is the most important part — I can't function, in the most general sense, if I'm ass deep in a bottle. But sobriety has also given me a chance at a fulfilling life in so many other ways.

My wife and I met in our late 30s, and we had our two children when we were older. Now that I'm an older father, I worry I'm losing time with my kids. I've come to realize I will be a senior citizen by the time my kids graduate from high school and enter college, so I'm not wasting any minute. I have enjoyed it so much that I work entirely from home now and spend almost every waking minute with Ellie and Jack.

With the rise in the term's popularity has also come confusion about its past tense. WASHINGTON (AP) — A bill to create a bipartisan commission that would tackle the nation’s soaring debt and make policy recommendations to Congress won approval Thursday from a House committee. Many Democrats see the commission as an attempt to force cuts to Social Security and Medicare. The commission would have 16 members: 12 from Congress, evenly divided by party, and four outside experts who would not have voting power. Republicans blame federal spending for the annual deficits while many Democrats cite tax cuts enacted under Republican administrations. Three committee Democrats voted for it, including Rep. Scott Peters, D-Calif., who worked with Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Mich. in sponsoring the bill.

A super PAC supporting Ron DeSantis in the Republican presidential primary is laying off staff as it shifts its operation out of Iowa following the Florida governor's second-place finish in the cycle's first nominating contest. An official with the PAC, Never Back Down, told CNBC on Wednesday that it has transferred some of its Iowa political staff to other early primary states and will pay the rest of them through January. In a post on LinkedIn, Andrews said he was "now a free agent due to budget cuts beyond my control." The deals came with conditions about Trump’s net worth and, sometimes, liquidity, and they often required annual submissions of his financial statements. But, testifying for the defense, managing director David Williams said the bankers viewed clients' reports of their net worth as “subjective or subject to estimates” and took its own view of such financial statements. The attorney general's office, however, has maintained that such adjustments were never intended to account for the alleged fraud. He asserted in his own testimony this month that his lenders cared more about property locations and the parameters of the deals than they did about the financial statements. “Are you aware of any time Deutsche Bank didn’t adhere to its own guidelines in making loans to President Trump?” defense attorney Jesus M. Suarez asked.

This board has called many times for an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel, and we have called for mercy and reason in the current conflict. It is also noteworthy that the Palestinian Authority under Mr. Abbas has largely stayed clear of the Gaza eruption. Israel is the dominant power here, and in the current conflict, Israel will once again need to be first to move toward the establishment of a Palestinian state. Holding Israel’s leaders to account in no way lessens the responsibility that Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad bear for the present suffering in Gaza. CNN —The Florida law that limits drag shows in the state will remain blocked, the Supreme Court said Thursday, dealing a blow to a key initiative championed by Republican Gov. Florida had asked the high court to narrow a lower court’s injunction that stopped the law from being enforced statewide. The 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals declined Florida’s emergency application for a stay of the district court’s injunction, triggering the state’s ask to the Supreme Court for relief. Since the district court temporarily blocked enforcement of the law, the restaurant has returned to normal operations. The challenge to the law continues at lower courts, and Steve Vladeck, CNN Supreme Court analyst and professor at the University of Texas School of Law, cautioned against drawing broader implications from Thursday’s order.

On TikTok, about a third of the content we watched were ads — but it didn't always feel that way. Other users have complained on the site that they are receiving ads "all over their FYP" or ads "every 6 videos." We focused solely on TikTok videos and slideshows and excluded TikTok stories and TikTok livestreams — even streams that were explicitly there to sell products, like QVC. The key difference is that you scroll past a TikTok ad. Kristen Schiele, a USC Marshall School of Business professor, told Insider we could see an increased ad volume since advertisers push more ad content around the holiday season.

It’s also a clear sign that the gun safety movement needs to get to work reforming the Supreme Court. Regardless of how Rahimi is decided, the Supreme Court has already done enormous damage to our ability to keep Americans safe from gun violence. We need Supreme Court expansion to restore balance and sanity to the Court. Fortunately, Supreme Court expansion is clearly constitutional: Congress has done it multiple times throughout American history and we can do it again. Expanding the Supreme Court would be yet another way we can fight the war against senseless gun violence.

The charges against her represent a pivotal moment for India; If Ms. Roy is incarcerated, she will become the country’s highest-profile prisoner of conscience. Under Mr. Modi, the number of cases filed has jumped to 288 as of September 2022. But the real reason she is being targeted now — 13 years later — is surely because of her courageous criticism of the intolerance and violence unleashed under Mr. Modi. Jordan has the weekend to continue to make his case and attempt to flip holdouts, but he faces a steep uphill battle. But it soon became clear that Jordan also faces a stiff wall of resistance. That vote, which was cast by secret ballot, was 152 to 55, laying bare the major challenge Jordan faces in his bid for the gavel. His death has been memorialized as an egregious hate crime that helped fuel the LGBTQ+ rights movement over the ensuing years. In 2011, the military scrapped the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy that kept gay, lesbian and bisexual service members in the closet. Several activists interviewed this week by The Associated Press evoked Matthew Shepard as they discussed broader developments. The act expanded the federal hate crime law to include crimes based on a victim’s sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.
