If you were an American artist or writer in the 1920s, Paris was where you wanted to be. She had lived in New York once, just eight years before, but in her absence the city had been scaled up: new skyscrapers were rising, the population was exploding, and every block, it seemed, was abuzz with commerce and construction. (The market crash of October 1929 was still many months away). Suddenly, Paris was passé. The exhibition’s focus is a disbound scrapbook with seven to nine photographs per page, all taken over the course of that year, as Abbott paced the streets (and piers, bridges and train platforms) with a hand-held camera and a compulsion to capture New York’s unruly, cutthroat modernity.

Fame and fortune weren't exactly in the cards for actor and WWE superstar John Cena early on. Finding a job in the field, however, proved harder than he'd thought, Cena told comedian Kevin Hart on Peacock talk show "Hart to Heart." After "every avenue of fitness failed," and a last-ditch effort to become a highway patrol officer fell through, Cena was met with homelessness, sleeping in the back of his 1991 Lincoln Continental and living off free pizza from a local shop. "They had a deal where, if you could eat their whole pizza, you got it for free," Cena said, chuckling. It's a job Cena didn't even know was possible.

A Tesla charging station stands in a parking lot on January 17, 2023 in Springfield, Virginia. But other EV charging companies have, so far, faced a far greater reliability challenge than Tesla’s. It’s an integrated system and has been from the very beginning,” said Jim Burness, chief executive of National Car Charging, a wholesaler of equipment to the EV charging industry. In both cases, drivers will be able to access Tesla chargers without having to use Tesla apps. That could lead to more lines at Tesla chargers, irritating Tesla owners.

The crashes occurred around 11 a.m. local time, south of Springfield, Ill., according to Illinois State Police Maj. Ryan Starrick.
CNN —At least six people were killed after a dust storm caused dozens of vehicles to crash along a major highway in Central Illinois on Monday, officials said. The crashes along I-55 led to the interstate closing in Sangamon and Montgomery counties after police say dust from newly plowed fields took over the highway. Illinois State Police Maj. Ryan Starrick said there were at least six dead and more than 30 people were hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening. He said the interstate in southern Sangamon and northern Montgomery counties would remain closed as officials investigate and clear vehicles. The National Weather Service in Lincoln, Illinois, issued a “blowing dust warning” at 1:25 p.m. CT.“Severely limited visibilities are expected.
Six people were killed and more than 30 people were injured in crashes caused by “excessive winds” that blew dust from nearby farms onto Interstate 55 in a rural section of central Illinois, on Monday morning, leading to “zero visibility” conditions, the Illinois State Police said. The crashes, which took place just before 11 a.m. in Farmersville, Ill., south of Springfield, involved about 20 commercial vehicles and 40 to 60 cars, including two tractor-trailers that caught fire, the police said in a statement. The people injured were between 2 and 80 years old, and their injuries ranged from minor to life-threatening, the authorities said, noting that it had been difficult to extract people from their vehicles, some of which were engulfed in flames. “This is a difficult scene, something that is very hard to train for something that we really haven’t experienced locally,” Kevin Schott, the director of Montgomery County’s emergency management agency, said at a news conference on Monday.

Chris Hammons unloads a bag of items she purchased at a Bed Bath & Beyond store in Dallas, Texas September 23, 2009. In its bankruptcy filing, Bed Bath & Beyond said it had $5.2 billion in debt and assets of just $4.4 billion. Discount chains such as HomeGoods and TJ Maxx have also undercut Bed Bath & Beyond’s prices. Without the differentiators of the lowest prices or widest selection, Bed Bath & Beyond’s sales stagnated from 2012 to 2019. And Bed Bath & Beyond is the latest retail chain to file for bankruptcy this year.

Devoting this much land to parking makes housing more expensive and hurts the environment. Removing some of our parking could boost our quality of life, according to a former Google exec. All this parking is a burden on our environment, government budgets, affordable housing, and, ultimately, quality of life, Poskey said. He pointed to onerous parking requirements as a reason for the country's lack of affordable housing. Areas of Plano, Texas; Springfield, Massachusetts; and New Orleans with a mix of commercial buildings and stores accounted for 3% of those cities' land but 40% of their jobs, the Brookings Institution found.
Missouri State Sen. Mike Moon defended child marriage on Tuesday, citing a couple he knows. Moon said the couple married at age 12 and that they were still together. "You said actually that should be the law because it's the parents' right and the kid's right to decide what's best for them. "Do you know any kids who have been married at age 12?" In 2018 the Missouri legislature passed a bill raising the state's minimum marriage age from 15 to 16, with teens under 18 requiring parental consent.

The J. Edgar Hoover Building, headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in Washington, D.C. , whose replacement location is to be chosen soon. WASHINGTON—After more than a decade of delay and escalating political volleys across the Potomac River in recent months, the agency that manages the federal government’s real estate is close to picking the location of a new Federal Bureau of Investigation headquarters campus in the capital’s suburbs. The decision to replace the deteriorating J. Edgar Hoover Building in downtown Washington has set off a heated competition between elected officials representing Virginia and Maryland, the two states vying to secure the future site to house at least 7,500 bureau employees and the bureau’s leadership, along with the economic development that will come with it. Maryland’s two potential sites are in Greenbelt and Landover, while Virginia’s is in Springfield.
A society committed to housing and feeding its people will ensure plenty of land is dedicated to homes and farms. According to the builder WGI, the average parking stall in the US costs $27,900 to build, more than the cost of many new compact cars. The money and resources dedicated to parking could be used for other purposes, but breaking our country's reliance on parking has been difficult. Parking accounted for about 27% of per-unit costs, regardless of whether the resident owned a car or not. Better transportation, better land use, better citiesEfforts are underway to finally rid America of its unhealthy devotion to parking.
