Santoro’s death was one of many — all too many — which activists and healthcare workers sought to avoid by legalizing abortions and abortion care in the United States. Carmen Winant’s new photobook, “The Last Safe Abortion,” also seeks to memorialize the labor, advocacy and community-building of abortion care providers and women’s health care workers in the near-50-year period that the right to an abortion was legally protected across the US. “The Last Safe Abortion,” seeks to memorialize the labor, advocacy and community-building of abortion care providers and women’s health care workers in the near-50-year period that the right to an abortion was legally protected across the US. Carmen Winant/SPBH EditionsThough particularly salient at this time, Winant’s book isn’t a direct response to the Roe repeal, she told CNN. Notably, none show strife or confrontations with protestors, in contrast to the visual narratives that often surround abortion care.

Antelopes, hundreds of thousands of them, are crossing the savannas of South Sudan. But a report published today estimates that South Sudan is home to the largest known migration of land mammals on Earth. South Sudan, a country in central Africa, has a varied landscape, from rainforests to lush savannas and swamplands fed by the Nile River (pictured). The notable fact about the anti-Israel campus demonstrations is that they are predominantly an elite phenomenon. And what should those on the other side of the demonstrations — Jewish students and alumni most of all — do about it? Regarding the first question, some argue that the furor over the campus protests is much ado about not much. With notable exceptions, campus life at these schools is somewhat less roiled by protest than the media makes it seem. Outside groups, as more than one university president has told me, have played an outsize role in setting up encampments and radicalizing students.

Read previewThe hiring process seems to have become increasingly complex in recent years, with job seekers facing new tests, more interviews, and months of waiting to hear back from prospective employers. Job seekers have been taking to social media to complain about jumping through various hiring hoops just to secure an entry-level job. He said that in recent years, the hiring process has slowed down as the number of interview rounds has increased: "It reflects a lack of understanding by employers about what they're actually looking for." Advertisement"Many interviews and job assessments now take place online, which means candidates need to adapt to virtual interactions and later demonstrate their skills remotely," she said. When job interviews started to be done on Zoom and managers had fewer opportunities to evaluate candidates, more employers began using cognitive and psychometric assessments as part of their hiring process.

Sixteen Nobel Prize-winning economists signed a joint letter Tuesday warning of what they see as economic risks if former President Donald Trump were to serve a second term, including reheated inflation. "While each of us has different views on the particulars of various economic policies, we all agree that Joe Biden's economic agenda is vastly superior to Donald Trump's," the economists wrote. "There is rightly a worry that Donald Trump will reignite this inflation, with his fiscally irresponsible budgets," wrote the group of politically progressive academics. Joseph Stiglitz, who won the Nobel Prize in 2001, led the effort to publish Tuesday's letter. "Nonpartisan researchers, including at Evercore, Allianz, Oxford Economics, and the Peterson Institute, predict that if Donald Trump successfully enacts his agenda, it will increase inflation," the economists wrote.

How Much Could It Cost?,” by Danielle Ofri (Opinion guest essay, June 18):As a retired cardiologist, I have been railing against facility fees for years. These are significant fees (sometimes thousands of dollars) added to your doctor’s typical charges when they are employed by a hospital system, as many are these days. The rationale from the hospital or health care system, as Dr. Ofri stated, is nonsense; it is simply a way to make more money. It works like this: You see your private cardiologist in their office and have a stress test and get charged $500. The doctor usually has no idea this additional fee is being added, and the hospital system pockets the money.

Rival United Airlines — second to Delta in net profit margins — is circling. Delta plans to open Delta One lounges in Boston and Los Angeles later this year, and is studying airports where it could open others. Like other airlines, Delta accepted billions in federal aid to weather the pandemic. Luxury air travel and the United States didn't go together for many years — and might not still, if you ask well-heeled globetrotters. And at Delta and other airlines, many of the perks for luxury flyers come through lounges.

From the ages of 7 to 17, my parents sent me to sleep-away camp for weeks. Starting at two weeks and quickly building up to six, I spent my summers away from home in Shelby, Michigan, on the sand dunes of Camp Miniwanca. At first it was hardI will admit, as a young child, the first few summers at camp weren't easy. I never had to worry about being judged by my camp friends and was able to grow in many ways, slowly becoming more confident, more curious, and more spirited. Summer camp molded me into the girl I was and the woman I've become — independent, curious, and always searching for the next adventure.

CNN —Forecasters will soon be able to see real-time mapping of lightning activity on Earth and keep a closer eye on solar storms unleashed by the sun thanks to a new weather satellite. The weather satellite lifted off aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 5:26 p.m. What sets GOES-U apart from other satellites is that it’s carrying a new capability to keep an eye on space weather. The coronagraph will provide continuous observations of the solar corona, or the hot outer layer of the sun’s atmosphere, which is where space weather events originate, said Elsayed Talaat, director of NOAA’s Office of Space Weather Observations. The instrument’s capabilities will allow NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center to issue warnings and watches one to four days in advance and “mark a new chapter in space weather observatoions,” Talaat said.

Why Europe’s youth are flirting with the far-right

In this month’s European Parliament elections, far-right parties performed predictably well – but especially, and unexpectedly, among young people. Far-right parties enjoyed a similar uptick in support in the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Austria, and continued to do well in Italy. Gonzalo Fuentes/ReutersBut young voters appear less concerned by these roots, says Simon Schnetzer, author of a recent survey of Germany’s youth. But the burst in support for far-right parties could spell a darker trend. This success of far-right parties should be a warning to Europe’s mainstream.

The Rafah crossing – a key transitway for humanitarian aid to Gaza – has been closed since early May, and only a handful of other land crossings remain open. Read previewRussia and Ukraine have relied heavily on electronic warfare tactics throughout the conflict, leaning on cheap — but highly effective — technology to interfere with the targeting process of precision strike weapons like attack drones and guided munitions. With the battlefield full of such threats, especially the drones that threaten anything that moves, the need for electronic warfare systems is tremendous. "Different EW tools are needed to conduct strategic missions, but there is also a huge need for so-called 'close-range' EW," Fedorov said. Related storiesClose-range electronic-warfare systems would be particularly useful against enemy drones, specifically the small quadcopters that conduct reconnaissance and strike missions. His slang has also offered me an accidental and useful portrait of how he and his generation see the world. The primary value of slang has been to create linguistic shibboleths, a way to differentiate yourself quickly from other people. My son’s generation has a vastly superior approach to slang. They’ve devised a language that responds to the new and distinct reality they face. My son’s slang reflects that: It’s a distinct language created for a society that’s characterized, online and off, by collapsing institutions, erosions in trust and a loss of faith in a shared sense of meaning.
