Jeenah Moon | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThis week, the Department of Health and Human Services asked the Drug Enforcement Agency to consider easing restrictions on marijuana upon a review of its classification under the Controlled Substances Act. It could be a significant catalyst for an industry hemmed in by federal regulations even as legalization picks up on the state level. Marijuana is legal in 39 states medically and 23 states recreationally. If marijuana moves down to a Schedule III substance, this will effectively ease a number of restrictions holding the sector back. While many states have legal markets within their borders, transporting Schedule I substances across state lines in illegal, resulting in a glut of marijuana in some states.

AMC Entertainment shares plummeted more than 20% on Tuesday, slipping to a new 52-week low of $2.46 per share, as investors brace for a stock conversion later this week. On Friday, the movie theater chain's preferred equity units, dubbed APE shares, are set to be transformed into common stock just one year after they began trading on the New York Stock Exchange. These preferred equity units are a workaround, of sorts, and free AMC up to sell additional units of stock after investors who feared dilution rejected the company's efforts to issue additional stock last year. AMC also is planning a 10-to-1 reverse stock split of its common stock on Thursday. Shares of the company have nearly halved since it was announced on Aug. 14 that the APE shares would be converted.

"That's a normal correction, when bull markets get overheated like this," said Dan Wantrobski, technical strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott. When a stock, for example, falls below its 200-day moving average, it is seen as a potential sign of more downside pressure. Earlier this month, the index fell below the commonly watched 50-day moving average. The logo for Occidental Petroleum is displayed on a screen on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York, U.S., April 30, 2019. The DAC technology is in early stages of commercialization and will require multibillion-dollar investments to prove it can work economically and generate profits. President Joe Biden's administration views DAC technology as a tool to help meet a goal of neutralizing emissions by 2050, if it can be commercialized and applied at industrial scale. While carbon capture is applied to emissions produced at industrial facilities, DAC actively removes CO2 from the air. Some of that money will fund Occidental's 30 proposed DAC plants in Kleberg Country, Texas.
