CNN —The deep landslides beneath the multimillion-dollar homes in Rancho Palos Verdes moved at an almost glacial pace, until they didn’t. This affluent coastal city in Southern California, around 30 miles south of Los Angeles, has long enticed people with its Pacific Ocean views and lush greenery. This February, an atmospheric river dumped record amounts of rain across southern California, triggering hundreds of mudslides and leaving at least nine people dead. In July, a landslide triggered by heavy monsoon rains in India’s southern state of Kerala killed at least 150 people. In Southern California, “people wanted to pretend they lived in the tropics,” he said, “and planted a lot of landscaping that required lots of watering.”Deforestation is another factor.

That may not sound like much, but Breitenmoser explains that given that lynx populations were critically endangered at the time, the impact was significant. Ortiz says that in a five-year timeframe, almost €4.5 million ($5 million) will be spent on improving habitats and nearly €2.9 million ($3.2 million) on boosting connectivity, including virtual fences. Innovation aside, for Ortiz the future of the Iberian lynx depends on co-operation.

Tesla said it will launch its "Full Self Driving" driver assistance product in Europe and China early next year. Tesla is yet to receive regulatory permission to launch its FSD product in Europe and China, but Musk in July said that he expects to get this clearance by the end of 2024. So-called Full Self Driving, or FSD, has been a key pillar of Musk's strategy to make Tesla a more AI-centric company and push toward self-driving technology. Despite the label on its product, FSD is not actually capable of making its vehicles fully autonomous. FSD is an upgrade to Tesla's Autopilot driver assistant, which is already available in Europe and China.

Rancho Palos Verdes, a coastal community in the Los Angeles area, could be described as a geological ticking time bomb. The affluent city sits atop steep cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean that, for hundreds of years, have been slowly shifting and giving way. Whereas the ground slid downward 8 inches annually in years past, it has lurched 13 inches per week in some places between July and August. The Palos Verdes Peninsula is composed of weak rocks and beds of clay that prevent water from draining properly belowground. So during periods of heavy rain or high tectonic activity, the bluffs can slip, turning constant, slow-moving landslides into catastrophes.

US Steel and Nippon Steel both indicated in statements that they’re open to legal fights to get the deal approved, no matter what actions is announced by Biden. Shares of US Steel (X) closed down 17.5% on the news at $29.37, well below the $55 a share that Nippon Steel agreed to pay for the stock back in December when the deal was announced. US Steel said the future of this and other union-represented plants at the company are at risk unless it gets approval to be purchased by Nippon Steel. US Steel says it has more than 3,000 employees in the state in its remaining steel mills along the Monongahela River just outside of Pittsburgh. The union says it doesn’t believe in the promises made by Nippon Steel so far and that it remains opposed to the purchase.

Reuters —Cruise will offer its autonomous vehicles on Uber’s platform starting next year, the companies said on Thursday, as the General Motors-backed robotaxi firm attempts a comeback. The multi-year partnership will allow Uber riders to choose a trip using a Cruise autonomous vehicle, they said. Uber’s partnership with Cruise comes as Tesla CEO Elon Musk is set to unveil its delayed plans for a robotaxi product in October amid slowing demand for electric vehicles. Commercializing autonomous vehicles has been tougher than expected and taken longer than promised due to complex technology, soaring investments, tight regulatory scrutiny and federal investigations. San Antonio, Texas, experienced 54 extremely hot days, 16 more than its 2013-to-2023 average, while Nashville, Tennessee has logged 23, also 16 days above average. “The overall trend is clear: major American cities have experienced a significant rise in the number of extremely hot days,” said Tucker Landesman, a senior researcher with the International Institute for Environment and Development. Serbia’s president Sunday accused demonstrators who opposed a lithium mining project in the Balkan country of being part of a Western-backed “hybrid” warfare against his government and vowed to take strong legal action against those protesters who have blocked railway and road traffic in the capital a day earlier. Some of the protesters later blocked tracks at two railway stations in the city, and briefly stopped traffic on a major highway. Saturday’s demonstration came after weeks of protests in dozens of cities throughout Serbia against a government plan to allow lithium mining in a lush farming valley in the west of the country. CNN —Russian authorities were on Monday evacuating civilians from more areas along the Ukrainian border, a week into Kyiv’s surprise cross-border incursion into Russian territory. Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of the Belgorod region in southern Russia, said people living in the Krasnoyaruzhsky district were being relocated to safer places. Russian authorities imposed a sweeping counter-terror operation in the three border regions, but stopped short of declaring the incursion an act of war. The counterterrorist regime officially gives Russian authorities wider powers, including the ability to monitor telephone conversations and restrict communications and limiting the movement of people.
