REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo License this content on Reuters ConnectNEW YORK, Aug 1 (Reuters) - LensCrafters agreed to pay $39 million to settle a lawsuit by prescription eyeglass customers who accused the eyewear chain of misleading them about how well its Accufit technology could measure their eyes. Customers said the claims were false because LensCrafters' manufacturing processes did not support its claims, and that an update would not be clinically significant. They claimed to pay more for their glasses than if LensCrafters had not overpromised and underdelivered. The settlement covers all U.S. customers of LensCrafters who since Sept. 5, 2013, bought prescription glasses after being fitted with Accufit. LensCrafters said it operates 955 stores in 49 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, with no stores in Wyoming.

A stronger dollar makes crude more expensive for investors holding other currencies. PVM analyst Tamas Varga noted that for months, predictions have been made that global oil demand will grow in the second half of 2023 versus the first half, in tandem with supply cuts to reduce global oil inventories. The latest figures from the U.S.- the world's biggest fuel consumer - showed fuel demand rose the highest level since August 2019. A Reuters poll also estimated U.S. crude oil and gasoline stockpiles were expected to have declined last week. In a conference on Monday, BP (BP.L) chief Bernard Looney presaged oil demand growth continuing into next year and OPEC+ being increasingly disciplined.

While an ISM survey offered a tough assessment of U.S. manufacturing conditions, so-called hard data suggest the sector is shuffling along. Federal Reserve data in June showed factory production rebounded in the second quarter, ending two straight quarterly declines. Meanwhile, U.S. construction spending increased solidly last month and May's data was revised higher, boosted by outlays in both single and multifamily housing projects, the Commerce Department said. China's Caixin/S&P Global manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) missed analysts forecasts and showed the first decline in activity since April. Money markets now see a 60% probability that the Bank of England will hike rates by 25 basis points on Thursday.

Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) for the second quarter of 2023 were $2.17 billion, versus $2.36 billion a year before. That was partially offset by higher revenues from increased volumes on its natural gas liquids, natural gas and crude oil businesses, it said. Enterprise sees natural gas liquids pricing and ethane pricing as constructive in the second half of 2023. During the quarter, the company saw operational records for natural gas pipeline volumes and natural gas liquids fractionation volumes. It brought online new projects including the 400 million cubic feet per day expansion of its Haynesville Extension of the Acadian natural gas pipeline system, and its Poseidon cryogenic natural gas processing plant in the Midland Basin.

The Merck logo is seen at a gate to the Merck & Co campus in Rahway, New Jersey, U.S., July 12, 2018. Merck said Keytruda sales for the quarter jumped 19% to $6.3 billion, surpassing analysts' average estimate of $5.9 billion. Sales of Gardasil, which prevents cancers caused by HPV, surged 47% to $2.5 billion, also well above Wall Street estimates of $2.1 billion. There is room for further Gardasil growth as its use expands into treating males and moves into smaller cities, he added. Despite those challenges, Merck raised its full-year sales forecast to $58.6 to $59.6 billion, from its prior view of $57.7 billion to $58.9 billion.

ET (1417 GMT) on Tuesday, the Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index (.GSPTSE) was down 84.12 points, or 0.41%, at 20,542.52. Data showed Canada's manufacturing sector contracted for the third straight month in July as an uncertain economic outlook held back new orders, offsetting a pickup in production. Lower oil prices dragged the energy sector (.SPTTEN) down 0.7%. In the neighboring U.S., manufacturing appeared to stabilize at weaker levels in July, data showed, amid a gradual improvement in new orders.

Ford has added 1,200 workers to the Lightning assembly system and plans to run it on a three-shift work rotation. As one of several new moves to boost demand, Ford said individual retail customers can now order the least expensive F-150 Lightning Pro, a $49,995 version of the truck originally designed for commercial customers only. To support increased Lightning production, Ford will focus sales efforts on "attracting more traditional customers, or the early majority," Gjaja said. “Challenges still remain around customer awareness and acceptance” of electric vehicles among mainstream buyers, he said. Ford said last week its electric vehicle operations are on track to lose $4.5 billion this year, a 50% wider loss than previously projected.

"July's PMI results offered a rather mixed bag on the performance of the Canadian manufacturing sector," Paul Smith, economics director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said in a statement. The new orders index, at 49.2, was in contraction for the fifth straight month, although up from 48.5 in June. The port strikes and wildfires limited the improvement in vendor performance, S&P Global said.

Group F leaders France ignited their campaign with a 2-1 win over Brazil at the weekend after struggling to a goalless draw against Jamaica in their opener. They need only a point in Sydney to reach the knockouts for a fourth straight World Cup. France are locked on four points with Jamaica, who can advance with a win or draw against Brazil in Melbourne. Heavyweights Brazil last exited the World Cup in the group stage in 1995. "Tomorrow's a decider and we don't want to go home," said Brazil great Marta, playing at her sixth and final World Cup.

It was the ninth straight month that the PMI stayed below the 50 threshold, which indicates contraction in manufacturing, the longest such stretch since the 2007-2009 Great Recession. The ISM survey's forward-looking new orders sub-index increased to 47.3 in July. According to the ISM, the delivery performance of suppliers to manufacturing firms has been faster for 10 straight months. It has, however, not been a reliable predictor of manufacturing employment in the government's nonfarm payrolls count. Manufacturing employment likely rose by 5,000 jobs last month, according to a Reuters survey of economists.

REUTERS/Carlo Allegri/File Photo License this content on Reuters ConnectAug 1 (Reuters) - A U.S. congressional committee on China said asset management giant BlackRock (BLK.N) and index provider MSCI (MSCI.N) were facilitating investments into blacklisted Chinese companies. "With all investments in China and markets around the world, BlackRock complies with all applicable U.S. government laws. We will continue engaging with the Select Committee directly on the issues raised," BlackRock said. Advanced chip packaging is a crucial technology that squeezes the most horsepower from the latest chip designs, and is crucial to chip contract manufacturers vying for business. The data from LexisNexis, released last month, indicates that TSMC and Samsung have steadily invested in advanced packaging technology for years, as Intel did not keep pace with its own filings. Packaging technology enabled the industry to stitch together several chips called "chiplets" - either stacked or adjacent to one another - within the same container. Samsung has been investing in advanced packaging for years but the South Korean chip giant established a dedicated team to pursue advanced packaging in December 2022, Moonsoo Kang, the unit's chief, said in a statement. Intel disputed the idea that the size of TSMC's patent portfolio indicated that it had developed more advanced technology.

Biden's decision comes as Alabama's Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville is blocking hundreds of U.S. military appointments to protest the Pentagon's policy reimbursing costs for service members who travel to get an abortion. French nuclear fuels company Orano, which operates uranium mines in the West African country, said last week its activities were ongoing despite the coup. The spot price is little changed also because Orano sells uranium on long-term contracts and the summer months are slow in the spot market, said Jonathan Hinze, president of UxC. "All indications would be that this would be a catalyst for upward moves in the uranium price given the overall tight supply/demand balance in uranium at this time."
