Markets could remain under pressure through the end of the year, and high dividend stocks are one option to help investors through the uncertainty, according to Morgan Stanley. Investors are also assessing pressures on the market driven by the surprise attack on Israel by Palestinian militant group Hamas over the weekend. To play another potential breakdown in the market, Morgan Stanley highlighted several dividend stocks that combine yield (how much a company pays out in dividends each year), dividend growth (how much that dividend grows over a period of time) and stability, and that look attractive on a three- to five-year basis. Morgan Stanley projects yields of 9.6% for Energy Transfer in 2024 and 9.9% for MPLX, a master limited partnership created out of Marathon Petroleum that operates crude oil and refined product pipelines. The bank's preference in tobacco is Philip Morris , whose 2024 dividend yield could be 5.5%, according to Morgan Stanley.

There's still value to be found among renewable energy stocks despite a rout, according to Bank of America. Leading renewable stock NextEra Energy Partners trimmed its growth forecast earlier this week, sparking a sell-off in the cleantech sector that has lasted for several days. Its stock tumbled about 27% so far this week, while its parent NextEra Energy is down 15% during the same period. BofA analyst Julien Dumoulin-Smith said the event has caused a "collapse in confidence" in NextEra and stoked fears that higher rates will dampen demand for renewable energy projects. ConEd stock has slipped about 12% from the start of the year, while shares of Array are down nearly 2%.

Striking United Auto Workers (UAW) union workers picket outside the Ford Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan, U.S., September 23, 2023. Striking auto workers say they would like to see more support from elected officials as they push to get companies to share more of the profits. Republicans believe Biden's push to electrify America's vehicle fleet, by pumping billions of dollars of tax rebates into EV manufacturing, is unpopular with auto workers. In Michigan, Trump will criticize Biden's economic policies and incentives promoting EVs and say he would do a better job of protecting blue-collar workers if elected to a second term, Miller added. Biden's Michigan visit represents the most support a sitting president has shown striking workers since Theodore Roosevelt invited striking coal workers to the White House in 1902, historians said.

What the Fed’s September Rate Decision Means for You
  + stars: | 2023-09-20 | by ( Steve Garmhausen | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +5 min
By Steve GarmhausenThe Federal Reserve elected on Wednesday to keep interest rates steady, and that’s good news for savers: It means they’ll continue to enjoy the best rates in more than two decades. There’s more good news: The market, which just a few weeks ago expected rate cuts to start early in 2024, now doesn’t expect cuts until midyear. “There are several options to get at least 5% on your liquid cash, and that should stay around until the Fed cuts rates,” says DepositAccounts.com founder Ken Tumin. Meanwhile, inflation remains well above the Fed’s preferred rate of 2%, providing another reason for it to keep rates high. The fed-funds rate is the interest rate at which banks lend reserve balances to each other overnight.

How to get an even higher CD rate than you see advertised

Higher yields on certificates of deposit are out there, but you'll have to venture beyond your favorite bank to get them. "There could be as much as a 50-basis point difference going to a brokered CD," he said. Brokered vs. bank offerings With a bank CD, the investor goes directly to the institution to buy the instrument. For instance, brokered CDs purchased via Vanguard begin at 1 to 3 months and go out beyond 10 years. The value of the CD will fluctuate with interest rates, with the price declining as yields run higher.

"As cash yields remain elevated and inflation has cooled significantly from last year's levels, cash yields moved into positive territory on a real, inflation-adjusted basis after a few years of negative real yields," said Veronica Willis, global investment strategist at the firm. The pros weigh in on whether it's a good idea to stay in cash for the remainder of the year. Cash to 'outperform' stocks In a Sept. 7 note, Barclays said it believes cash will, in the fourth quarter, outperform stocks for a second straight quarter. So, for a second straight quarter, we prefer the company of cash over stocks and bonds," Barclays wrote, describing major asset classes as "still unattractive." "If short-term interest rates fall, short-term investments or cash investors will need to reinvest at a lower rate, reducing future returns.

The firm upgraded the stock to outperform from "peer perform," noting it has an "attractive" risk-reward ratio. Analyst Justin Lake raised his price target to $80, implying 16.4% upside from Monday's close of $68.75, which was the firm's previous price target. The analyst said he sees potential for CVS to more conservatively set expectations for earnings growth in 2025 and beyond in the high single-digit range. The stock has gained 5.5% so far this month, however, and rose 4.4% during Monday's trading session. Combined, Lake said these efforts should effectively allow CVS to "reinvest for future growth."

The Fed's rate-hiking campaign gave investors an opportunity they haven't seen in years: Risk-free returns are finally interesting. Six-month Treasurys are yielding 5.5%, while a bevy of money market funds are offering 7-day yields exceeding 5%, according to Crane Data . However, at some point, rates will come down — and investors hiding in short-term, high-yielding assets could find themselves with no place to go. That means investors could be left with few places to go for attractive yields in a lower rate environment as their shorter-term assets mature — known as reinvestment risk. The benefit of laddering when rates are high is that the longer-dated bonds will have already locked in the higher yields.

He pointed to strong private brand sales for apparel as well as for home goods like cookware and small appliances such as blenders and toasters. The JCPenney CEO wouldn’t directly answer whether the department store plans to return to the public markets through an initial public offering. “We think there are a lot of advantages right now to being a private company,” Rosen said, noting that JCPenney’s owners are reinvesting in the company and are taking a “long-term perspective” on that investment.

TipRanks compiled buy-rated stocks with high dividend yields, including Ford and Mercedes-Benz. One way to profit in the stock market is by betting on a company's ability to grow its share price over time. One way to find these names is by reviewing Wall Street analyst ratings on stocks and comparing them to their dividend yields. Also, because dividend yields are calculated as the annual dividend per share divided by share price, a stock's dividend yield may be high because its price is in decline. The dividend yields are sourced from Nasdaq, while the ratings are compiled by TipRanks, a financial data firm that aggregates and analyzes stock-market data.

With 10-year Treasury yields at their highest since shortly before the financial crisis, it's a good time to add duration to your fixed income portfolio, according to Charles Schwab fixed income strategist Cooper Howard. The balanced portfolio — reported by many to have died in 2022 — is experiencing a revival. The iShares Core Growth Allocation ETF (AOR) that mimics the strategy lost 15.6% in 2022, including reinvested dividends. Investors sitting tight were rewarded, however, as 2023's run-up in stocks helped lift the 60/40 model. "And thanks to higher interest rates, investors are getting much higher compensation for taking interest rate risk compared to 2021-2022." REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File PhotoAug 1 (Reuters) - American International Group (AIG.N) exceeded second-quarter profit expectations on Tuesday, driven by growth at its life and retirement unit and lower-than-expected catastrophe losses in what was a very expensive quarter for the industry. AIG, one of the world's biggest commercial insurers, said net premiums written in its general insurance arm for the quarter ended June grew 10% to $7.5 billion. AIG's life and retirement unit saw a 42% jump in premiums and deposits, partly helped by record sales in fixed index annuities. AIG's general insurance accident year combined ratio was 88%, compared with 88.5%, a year earlier. The metric excludes catastrophe losses and a ratio below 100 signifies that the insurer earns more from premiums than it pays out in claims.

Heineken’s profit hit by drop in beer sales in Asia

Hong Kong CNN —People in Asia aren’t guzzling as much beer as they used to. Best known for its eponymous beer label, Heineken is home to more than 300 brands, including Tiger beer, Amstel Lager and Strongbow cider. Heineken branded beer did continue to see growth in the first half, both overall and within Asia Pacific. The brewer also blamed a drop in premium beer sales on a decline in Russia, a market the company has said it’s trying to exit. Heineken now expects “stable to mid-single-digit” growth in operating profit for the full year, compared with the “mid- to high-single-digit” growth it outlined in April.

The Federal Reserve is widely expected to boost interest rates by another quarter percentage point Wednesday afternoon – and that's terrific news for fixed income investors hoping to grab a little more yield. Since March 2022, the central bank has raised rates 10 times – with July's expected hike marking the 11 th increase – to cool inflation. Consider that during the week of March 11, 2022, the rate on the 2-year Treasury note was 1.75%, according to Refinitiv. Investors who wish to squeeze a little more interest income from their cash holdings have opted for Treasury bills, with the 6-month bill yielding 5.5%. By buying multiple notes of different maturities, investors can "ladder" these Treasurys and reinvest the proceeds from maturing bonds into longer-dated issues.
