Tighter bank lending means more opportunities for private lenders to lend and make outsize returns on their loans. Financial industry titans Jamie Dimon and Marc Rowan have been trading opposing views on the burgeoning sector for the last year. Last year, Rowan responded to Dimon's comments that higher capital requirements for banks had private lenders like Apollo "dancing in the streets." AdvertisementRowan on Thursday responded by saying that the private-credit industry helps reduce systemic risk caused by the traditional banking industry. Washington CNN —Former President Donald Trump has uttered multiple false or misleading claims about his Manhattan criminal trial this week as the trial has neared a conclusion. An “advice of counsel” defense typically requires the defendant to waive attorney-client privilege. This Court can not endorse such a tactic.” Therefore, Merchan ruled, Trump could not invoke or even suggest a “presence of counsel” defense in the trial. Prosecutors provided three theories of what unlawful means Trump used. After Merchan refused last week to change his mind, Trump’s defense decided not to call Smith as a witness.

CNN —Children’s sketches of violent scenes of gladiators and hunters battling animals have been uncovered at the archaeological park of Pompeii, the park’s superintendent has said. The drawings, thought to be made by children between the ages of five and seven sometime before Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, were found on the walls of a back room in the “Island of chaste lovers” residential sector of the archaeological park. The drawings depict a fight scene with two gladiators, spears in hand, facing what is likely to have been intended to be wild boars. So far, they have determined that the drawings likely came from “direct vision” of an event rather than from pictorial models.

Samsung Electronics' union threatens first ever walkout next week

A Samsung Electronics union in South Korea will begin escalating strike action next week by staging the first ever walkout over demands for higher wages, union officials said on Wednesday. The National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU), which has about 28,000 members, or more than a fifth of the company's total workforce, said it will stop work for one day on June 7 as part of broader protest measures. Samsung Electronics said in a statement on Wednesday: "We will sincerely engage in discussions with the union." Responding to Wednesday's proposed strike, a coalition of five unions at Samsung affiliates including another Samsung Electronics union questioned the intention behind the strike plan, indicating they would not join the move. Shares of Samsung Electronics closed down 3.1% on Wednesday, compared with the benchmark KOSPI's 1.7% fall.

China is developing new systems to hunt the US nuclear-powered submarines that could threaten a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, according to a new report. Also significant is that Chinese airborne sub hunters are tasked with protecting Chinese ballistic missile submarines as they sail to their patrol and launch locations. Current Chinese sonobuoys require "a complicated and labor-intensive series of manual button presses to configure sonobuoy parameters such as radio working frequency, working depth, working time, and pulse form to fit maritime conditions before deployment." "PLAN ASW units are training under more realistic conditions, and breaking down administrative barriers which prevented them from generating more training opportunities in different operational environments." AdvertisementFor example, since 2015, training materials have stressed the need for ASW aircraft and ships to work closely together, which is standard practice in the US and Western navies.

But this is the global system we do have and, within it, some billionaires are behaving much more generously and ethically than others. Melinda French Gates is one of the good ones. French Gates has long been an advocate for family planning and women’s rights abroad, and now she’s dedicating $1 billion through 2026 to those issues. Female billionaires, in other words, are far more likely than male ones to give away substantial portions of their wealth. So yes, we can applaud the good billionaires who give their wealth away, even if we think that they are representative of a bigger inequality problem.

Investors looking for new ways to capitalize on artificial intelligence should look at Fluence Energy , according to UBS. "FLNC is an under-appreciated beneficiary of increasing AI data center driven electricity demand as a leading supplier of utility-scale battery systems," analyst Jon Windham said. The firm reiterated its buy rating on the energy storage stock alongside a $32 per share price target. Fluence Energy is the second-biggest battery supplier at the utility level in the U.S. behind Tesla, UBS noted. "The more data centers consume electricity, the larger the arbitrage opportunity becomes, driving more demand for energy storage systems," the analyst said.

That femur led to a stegosaurus fossil, among the largest and most complete ever found, which has subsequently been nicknamed “Apex.” In July the Sotheby’s auction house will sell Apex at auction at an estimated value of $4 million to $6 million, making the skeleton the latest flashpoint in a long-running debate about the private fossil trade. Dinosaur fossils have fetched escalating prices at auction houses since 1997, when Sotheby’s sold “Sue” the Tyrannosaurus rex to the Field Museum in Chicago for $8.36 million. In 2020, “Stan,” another largely complete T. rex skeleton, sold at Christie’s for $31.8 million. Such pricing has raised serious concerns among academic paleontologists, said Stuart Sumida, vice president of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. Many of them have watched fossils that may unlock scientific mysteries get steered into the hands of wealthy private collectors rather than toward research institutions in recent decades.
