The rollout of Nvidia's next-generation of AI chips, Blackwell, is going to be delayed according to media and industry analyst reports. Smaller cloud firms that have built their businesses on Nvidia chips could be affected by the delay too. Each new generation of AI chips promises step changes in computing capacity, speed and efficiency, allowing for faster computations and larger models. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Nvidia's manufacturing partner, is using a relatively new process to manufacture the Blackwell chips. Some Blackwell chips have begun shipping to customers and production will still increase in the second half of the year.

Leaders at Meta and Alphabet have conceded that they might be funneling too much money into AI out of fear of falling behind in the arms race. AdvertisementGartner's research shows that generative AI requires executives to have a higher tolerance for indirect gains on their investments in the future over immediate returns. AdvertisementBut Big Tech executives believe that generative AI will bring about some of the biggest technological changes the world has seen in the past century — so it's worth the risk. It took only a week for the Park fire north of Sacramento to grow into the fifth-largest in California history, signaling the potential for a destructive wildfire season across much of the Western United States. Almost 50 other large or notable fires were burning throughout the region on Wednesday, according to a New York Times tracker. Although this year doesn’t yet compare to 2020, the most destructive wildfire season of the last two decades, the sheer number of fires currently burning in Western states — both big and small — has threatened to overwhelm firefighting resources at a rate that worries experts so early in the season. “Normally we’re ramping up in July to get to that peak in August, early September,” said Alex Robertson, director of fire and aviation management for the U.S. Forest Service. But this year, he said, “we’re going into August already at our full tilt.”At least one person was killed this week by a wildfire burning near Denver, and a historic mining town was leveled near Bakersfield, Calif. More than half a million acres of the Western United States have burned in the past week, according to the Times wildfire tracker.

Ukraine’s campaign to replenish its war-weary troops is ramping up and should help fill personnel gaps on the front line in the coming weeks, according to Ukrainian officials, soldiers and military analysts. The mobilization push has so far not significantly bolstered Ukraine’s forces on the battlefield, those people say. And some recruits who have arrived are not physically fit for combat, members of Ukrainian units have noted. But several brigades deployed on the battlefield have reported an increase in the number of conscripts they have received in recent weeks. They said they were hoping that the influx of soldiers would help Ukraine to stabilize the front line this summer.

According to Prasad and other experts, Harris' approach to China would likely be similar to that of Biden. Trump's biggest diversion from Biden-era trade policy would likely be tariffs levied on China. The Trump administration reached a "phase one trade deal" with China in 2019, but few terms were honored and subsequent phases never materialized. Within hours of Biden dropping out of the race and endorsing his vice president on Sunday, Trump’s campaign managers had released a blistering statement tying Harris to the administration’s policies. Instead, Trump’s team had orchestrated an exacting campaign around defeating Biden. But it was soon widely acknowledged within Trump’s camp that Biden bowing out would also throw their own campaign into uncertainty. Trump’s campaign also began privately ramping up and testing new lines of attack on Harris — someone they had largely ignored since she was sworn in as vice president. While polling has shown Harris is the best known among possible Democratic candidates to replace Biden, Trump’s advisers and allies maintain that most Americans don’t know much about her, creating an opening to define her to the public.
