Washington, DC CNN —The Federal Reserve is in no rush to cut interest rates, according to Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s written testimony submitted to congressional lawmakers, released Wednesday. Recent economic data showed that price pressures persisted in January, leading investors to recalibrate their expectations for rate cuts this year. Still, the timing and pace of rate cuts remains up in the air. Too soon to cut rates? In a recent interview with CNBC, Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin said “we’ll see” if the Fed cuts rates in 2024.

Opinion | A Poll Reflecting Worries About Biden’s Age

But The New York Times runs a front-page article about how unpopular President Biden is and voters’ worries about his age. The real story this election cycle is the fact that the putative Republican nominee has serious, observable signs of mental decline. Meredith DytchChicagoTo the Editor:Joe Biden may or may not be too old to lead the country, but either way the only alternative is Donald Trump. Mr. Biden, the oldest president in history, has done a good job in a difficult time, with a paralyzed Congress and the wreckage left by his predecessor. By contrast, Mr. Trump did a terrible job, filled his cabinet with corrupt incompetents and focused on enriching himself, to the great detriment of the American people.

Mr. Trump is planning an extreme expansion of his anti-immigration policies if he wins the election in 2025, including what he calls the “largest domestic deportation operation” in U.S. history. Lamy, a German pen manufacturer, made a recent splash when it quietly rereleased Dark Lilac, a much-celebrated color of ink. A lush purple with a golden sheen, Dark Lilac, despite its popularity, had been produced only once before — as a limited edition in 2016. Its reappearance a couple of weeks ago was so unexpected that the fountain pen community, which makes up a small but passionate corner of the office supplies market, was agog. “There is drama in the fountain pen community,” Aidan Bernal, a 23-year-old fountain pen enthusiast, said at the start of a recent TikTok in which he did his best to explain the saga — one that has involved conflicting company statements, amateur sleuthing and an elusive shade of purple. Long overshadowed by its ballpoint, gel and felt-tip rivals, the regal fountain pen, which has an internal reservoir for refillable ink, has enjoyed a modest resurgence in recent years.

Now, some economists think the Fed won’t cut interest rates at all this year. “The Fed will not cut rates this year and rates are going to stay higher for longer,” he added. Richmond Federal Reserve President Tom Barkin echoed the idea that the central bank may not cut interest rates this year. In some ways, the expectations of interest rate cuts by the Fed undermined their efforts to actually cut the rates. Still, about half of investors are expecting an interest rate cut at the Fed’s June meeting, according to the CME FedWatch tool.

Read previewOnce again, executives at OnlyFans want to make it clear: the platform isn't a porn site. Calling OnlyFans a place for "adult content" is a more accurate description of the platform than a porn site, Blair said. The site hosts a variety of content outside porn that caters to people aged 18 and older and adheres to its terms of service. Amrapali Gan, the former CEO of OnlyFans who stepped down from the helm in July 2023, said in an interview that there have been plenty of misconceptions about the site being explicitly made for porn. Blair told FT the company is "doing well financially."

New York CNN —US markets broke a five-week winning streak last Friday after disappointing inflation data reignited economic and interest rate-related fears on Wall Street. Then last week, two key inflation indicators for January — the Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index — rose above Wall Street expectations. Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin said the new data showed that the Fed needs more confidence before cutting rates. I think in this case, the market isn’t necessarily telling you much about the economy’s fundamentals, the market is telling you what other market participants think. And I think that those economic fundamentals get you to the part that says, you know, it’s not not the economy.

Glenn Youngkin’s policies on the treatment of transgender students and rule that school districts are not required to follow them. But opponents argue that the policies violate the law by codifying discrimination against transgender students. The lawsuits were filed on behalf of two transgender students: one, a high school student in York County, the other, a middle school student in Hanover County. Ralph Northam’s administration were praised by advocates for transgender students, but many school boards did not adopt them. Some school boards with conservative majorities have adopted the policies, while some liberal-leaning school boards, especially in northern Virginia, have resisted.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A GOP legislative effort to prevent Virginia children from using the popular video-sharing app TikTok — an idea backed by Republican Gov. Leftwich also said he brought the bill out of mental health and data privacy concerns for young people. “But I will not be supporting this bill because I think it’s unfair to single out TikTok,” she said. “We’ve long said bans, like the one proposed in this legislation, are not only the wrong approach, but also raise significant First Amendment concerns," Brown said.

The problem underscores a widely held consensus that Virginia’s mental health care system is in urgent need of reform, due to what Gov. Improving mental health care became a priority in the U.S. like never before as the pandemic brought new levels of isolation, fear and grief, in addition to pre-existing crises such as rising drug overdose deaths and the struggles burdening teen girls. Survey data from the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found that in 2022, about half of adults with any mental illness did not receive treatment. Elsewhere in the U.S., states' policy concerns and approaches to improving mental health care have varied. Mental health was listed as a budget priority in most states in an analysis by the National Association of State Budget Officers.
