Dollar General bets on old boss’s old magic
  + stars: | 2023-10-13 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
NEW YORK, Oct 13 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Dollar General (DG.N) is reaching back to happier days. In that time, shares plummeted 60%, compared to rival Dollar Tree’s (DLTR.O) gentler decline of roughly a fifth. Meanwhile, Dollar General has repeatedly missed analyst expectations as net profit margin fell from nearly 7% to estimates of 3% for this quarter, according to LSEG. Under his previous stint from 2015 until 2022, shares returned an annualized 19%, beating Dollar Tree, Walmart (WMT.N) and Big Lots (BIG.N). Dollar General faces plenty of challenges shared by all retailers, from rising wages to shifting consumer spending.

Private credit players like HPS Investment Partners and Blue Owl Capital (OWL.N) have a workaround, but it could prompt a painful hangover. Cashed-up private credit funds offered sums previously unseen outside of traditional bank financing on riskier deals. Private credit assets swelled 460% to over $1.4 trillion between 2010 and the end of 2022, Preqin says. Reuters GraphicsThe attraction of “mezz” and similar exotic lending isn’t just that it helps private credit source new deals. In 2021, that dynamic meant private loans briefly became cheaper than liquid, tradable loans – flying in the face of financial orthodoxy.

DUBAI, Oct 9 (Reuters) - The United Arab Emirates is refashioning state-owned Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) in the image of an international oil major by stepping up its global expansion and finding new revenue streams to maximise earnings for the Gulf state. The state-owned company also told Reuters it was investing in energy trading, without giving further details. ADNOC has two trading arms, both set up in 2020: ADNOC Trading, which is focused on crude oil, and ADNOC Global Trading, a joint venture with Italy's Eni (ENI.MI) and OMV which is more focused on refined products. Other recent hires include Bart Cornelissen, who left Deloitte to become ADNOC's senior vice president for group strategy and portfolio last month, according to LinkedIn. Recent senior hires for ADNOC's trading arms include alumni of Gunvor, Litasco, Shell and TotalEnergies, the employment network showed.

Reuters GraphicsInvestors have been exiting traditional energy funds, too, but the rate has slowed - net outflows reached $438 million in the last quarter compared with $3.32 billion in the previous three months. Oil rigs are seen at Vaca Muerta shale oil and gas drilling, in the Patagonian province of Neuquen, Argentina January 21, 2019. U.S. job growth rose by 336,000 in September according to Labor Department statistics, far exceeding economists' forecasts of a 170,000 rise. The sentiment of the statistics is mixed for oil prices. A strong U.S. dollar is typically negative for oil demand, making the commodity relatively more expensive for holders of other currencies. "Fear for the health of the global economy and thus oil demand going forward is at the heart of the sell-off," SEB analyst Bjarne Schieldrop said.

SPAC shell games will keep hiding the ball

The electric-vehicle industry, for one, was a serial SPAC user whose exuberance sputtered badly. Dressing them up as acquisitions of private firms by listed shell companies enables the participants to play by looser rules. "The company expects to experience ongoing, but lessening, operational impacts in the second quarter as it makes progress in returning to normalized operations," it said in a statement. A Clorox spokesperson said the company had informed law enforcement about the attack but had no further comment. The company expects a loss per share of between 35 cents and 75 cents in the quarter ended on Sept. 30, and for net sales to fall by 23% to 28% from a year earlier. "The impact from the cybersecurity attack more than offset the benefits of pricing, cost savings and supply chain optimization," Clorox said.

Sept 29 (Reuters) - Shares of Structure Therapeutics (GPCR.O) soared 60% on Friday after the drug developer's oral obesity treatment succeeded in a small early-stage study. Structure has said it is focused on developing oral obesity drugs that are simpler to manufacture than the current injectables. Structure "delivered better-than-expected efficacy and tolerability" for its oral drug, said Leerink Partners Research analyst David Risinger, adding that the early data was exceptional. High interest rates that caused financing costs for panel installations to surge and enduring supply chain disruptions have stifled residential and corporate solar system orders through much of 2023, hammering sector sentiment. SunPower Corporation (SPWR.O), which for nearly 40 years has been one of the largest U.S. residential solar system installers, has been the downside leader in terms of key solar share prices, dropping by nearly two-thirds year-to-date. The company also expects its leasing business - where it leases instead of sells solar panels to households, and charges homeowners a monthly fee - to show continued growth following a 108% expansion in the second quarter. HOME GROWN PRODUCTIONFirms that specialize in the manufacture of key solar components have also seen steep stock price declines this year. In 2022, inventory "shrink" as a percentage of total retail sales accounted for $112.1 billion in losses, up from $93.9 billion in 2021, according to the NRF report on Tuesday. Retailers are either being forced to close a specific store location, reduce operating hours or alter in-store product selection to deal with the spike in retail crime, the report added. Dollar Tree (DLTR.O) has said it plans to remove goods like men's underwear, an item most prone to retail theft, from its stores. Retailers are ramping up prevention methods with 34% of respondents increasing internal payroll to support risks related to retail crime and 46% increasing the use of third-party security personnel among other methods, according to NRF. The NRF survey was conducted online among senior loss prevention and security executives in the retail industry with insights from 177 retail brands.

A veto by the governor can still be overturned if the legislature chooses to vote in favor of the bill with a two-thirds majority in each house. Developing autonomous technology has proved harder and more expensive than expected, leading to job cuts and even companies shutting shop. But labor unions led by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters have been calling for Governor Newsom to sign the bill, saying autonomous trucks - some of which weigh over 80,000 pounds - were unsafe and would lead to job losses. The FBI is investigating the MGM and Caesars breaches, and the companies did not comment on who may be behind them. In some cases - Mandia did not say which ones - hackers tied to Scattered Spider placed bogus emergency calls to summon heavily armed police units to the homes of executives of targeted companies. ALPHV, which according to Mandiant is a "ransomware-as-a-service", would provide services such as a helpdesk, webpage and branding, and in turn get a cut of whatever Scattered Spider would make from the hack. While many ransomware attacks go unpublicised, the MGM hack was a vivid example of the real-world impact of such incidents.
