The dancer Mia Zalukar lay collapsed on the stage of NYU Skirball, seemingly exhausted after a long solo — but she wasn’t doing it quite right. This is one of many such exchanges in “Kill B.,” a 2019 work by Isakovic and Zalukar that had its United States premiere on Friday evening as part of the Queer New York International Arts Festival. The third wild film I saw at the Eccles on Friday was “Sasquatch Sunset,” a wordless comedy that follows a quartet of grunting Bigfoots as they trek through the forest for a year. When John Woo was a child, living in the dangerous slums of Hong Kong, he had two sanctuaries: the church and the movie theater. Both provided respite from a world of poverty and intense violence. He’d use a flashlight to illuminate the glass and, shifting the light, project moving images onto the wall. That 1989 film, starring his frequent collaborator Chow Yun-fat, proved a major work that established both Woo’s style and our notion of modern action cinema. And yet, even as his so-called “bullet ballet” films went on to influence an array of popular culture makers, including the Wu-Tang Clan and Quentin Tarantino, Woo said he never particularly cared for action films.

Of the many strengths of “Southern/Modern,” a daring and revisionist show about the American South at the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens, the one that follows you out to your car is the alternate history of modern art it proposes. Southern art — or food or literature, for that matter — has long suffered a reputation of isolation. You would have to be born there,” says the tortured Quentin in William Faulkner’s “Absalom, Absalom!” Ninety years later, Southern exceptionalism is over (mostly), and the area’s artists and curators and chefs now go to great, overcorrective lengths to be global, to be modern. But the artists of Faulkner’s day — they were still responding to an ancient, haunted South. These 100 or so paintings and prints suggest an invigorating direction that was there all along: a pungent pairing of social history with artistic experiment during the first half of the 20th century.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A high-profile entertainment marketing consultant was targeted by a woman who had been stalking one of his friends before she fatally shot him after her forcing her way inside his Los Angeles home, prosecutors said Thursday. This week's slaying of Michael Latt sent shockwaves through Hollywood as the suspect faces charges of murder and burglary. Latt, 33, had worked on projects with filmmakers including Ryan Coogler and Ava DuVernay, as well as rap artist Common. Prosecutors allege that Jameelah Elena Michl, 36, knocked on his home's door and forced herself inside once it was open. Latt had also worked at the Sundance Institute, which issued a statement on behalf of his family.

A British company that wants to become the go-to data platform for renewable energy just raised $15 million in a Series A funding round. London-based Modo Energy, which was founded in 2019, has developed a software-as-a-service data platform to help renewable energy owners, operators, and investors navigate the market and ultimately make more money. The startup operates a "freemium" software-as-a-service business model with three tiers, including free access to a paid version for university students. Modo Energy is also working with co-located solar and storage facilities, so that batteries are charged with solar before the energy is sold onto the grid. As part of its long-term business plan, the Franco-Italian group has said it aimed to generate 2 billion euros ($2.2 billion) in revenue by 2030 from its "circular economy" unit, by recycling and extending the life of parts and materials. Located in the Mirafiori complex, in Turin, the new circular economy hub focuses on life extension for parts and vehicles, component reconditioning as well as recycling materials to return to the manufacturing loop. The site, for which Stellantis has invested 40 million euros, currently employs 170 highly-trained employees, projected to rise to around 550 people by 2025.
