While Arsenal dominated possession and passing, the Gunners were largely toothless throughout the contest, mustering zero shots on target and just seven total shots all game. Meanwhile, in the UK, a spokesperson for campaign group Delivery Job UK said more than 3,000 food delivery riders were expected to strike for five hours on Wednesday. Riders participating in the strike are primarily Portuguese-speaking and work across multiple platforms, including Uber Eats, Deliveroo and Just Eat. “Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love, but it should not overshadow our struggle,” it added. It was near the start of one of Brazil’s most famous Carnival celebrations, in the northern seaside city of Olinda, and the town plaza was jammed with thousands of revelers. They were all awaiting their idol. Just before 9 p.m., the doors to a dance hall swung open, a brass band pushed into the crowd and the star everyone had been waiting for stepped out: a 12-foot puppet of John Travolta. Confetti sprayed, the band began playing a catchy tune and the crowd sang along: “John Travolta is really cool. And in Olinda, the best carnival.” (It rhymes in Portuguese.)

CNN —For the first time since his death in 1882, Charles Darwin’s impressive library has been virtually reassembled to reveal the multitude of books, pamphlets and journals cited and read by the influential naturalist. The catalog includes 9,300 links to copies of the library contents that are available for free online, inviting the public to peruse what Darwin read. After receiving letters from researchers and the public asking about specific titles from Darwin’s library, van Wyhe and his colleagues began their project to recreate it virtually in 2007. “He was a very highly educated person who learned ancient Greek and Latin in school as well as French,” van Wyhe said. “Instead of basing one’s understanding on the authors Darwin read that are mentioned in biographies, etc., anyone can now scroll through his whole library.

Lost Images Reveal the History of Rio’s CarnivalRafael Cosme was at a Rio de Janeiro antique fair six years ago when he found a pile of film negatives on the ground. It is Rio’s annual collective exhalation — a four-day eruption of art and music, costumes and joy — that began again on Saturday. “I realized there are endless stories I could tell about this city,” Mr. Cosme said about his discovery of Rio’s lost photos. Around that time, Rio’s rich elites began parading around the city during Carnival in open cars, according to Maria Clementina Pereira Cunha, a historian who has written books about Rio’s Carnival. Today the parade remains the centerpiece of Rio’s Carnival, held in a dedicated stadium built in 1984.

Representative Andy Kim, a third-term Democratic congressman, won an early but significant victory on Saturday against New Jersey’s first lady, Tammy Murphy, as they compete in one of the country’s most closely watched Senate primaries. Ms. Murphy, 58, lives in Monmouth County, and Mr. Kim represents a large swath of the affluent, predominantly coastal region. Mr. Menendez has not ruled out running for re-election, but he did not compete for the Monmouth County nomination. Two other candidates, Patricia Campos-Medina, a union leader, and Larry Hamm, a Newark-based social justice activist, won nominal support Saturday. MSN 120, however, is not the same plane that Global said it acquired back in May 2023. By Sergio Goncalves and Miguel PereiraLISBON (Reuters) - Thousands of off-duty police officers in plain clothes on Wednesday protested in Lisbon for better wages, demanding the same increases in hazard pay that the outgoing government recently granted to the criminal investigation police (PJ). In late November, after Prime Minister Antonio Costa's resignation but while he still had full powers to make long-term decisions, the government approved hazard pay rises for the PJ that can reach almost 700 euros ($763) per month and are retroactive to January 2023. He added that members of the PSP and the GNR had "practically the same competences as those of the PJ". Police union association ASPP said on Tuesday that the average hazard pay in the PSP was currently between 380 and 420 euros per month, while in the PJ it has reached 1,000 euros. Early in José Saramago’s 2006 memoir, “Small Memories,” he tells readers that he briefly considered calling it “The Book of Temptations” instead. His reasons were characteristically elliptical and charming: something about Bosch, and sainthood, and the fat prostitute who “in a weary, indifferent voice” invited a 12-year-old Saramago up to her room. (He doesn’t report his answer, but given how candid the book is elsewhere, it’s safe to assume he declined.) In the end, though, he decided that the title “Small Memories” better suited the book’s contents: “nothing of great note,” in Saramago’s estimation; simply “the small memories of when I was small.”But for a great writer, of course, there are no small moments, and Saramago (1922-2010) was one of the best. Saramago’s memoir, which appeared in English translation the year before he died, is a winsome look back at his coming-of-age in the small village of Azinhaga and later in Lisbon.

Bobi’s advanced age was remarkable: Dogs of his breed normally live 12 to 14 years. And although there are many exceptions, smaller dogs in general live longer than midsize ones, who live longer than the largest. It noted that while Bobi had been registered on a Portuguese government database, his listed age was based entirely on the owner’s say-so. Questions were also raised because the dog appeared to be overweight in photos, not a good sign for extreme longevity. It said that while the timeline could vary, it sought to keep such investigations to three or fewer months.

LISBON (Reuters) - Almost 140,000 visitors from the United States brought the number of foreign tourists in Portugal to a record high last November, the National Statistics Institute (INE) said on Monday. Overall, 1.1 million foreigners travelled to Portugal in November, a record number for that month. Spaniards and Britons came second and third, with 131,000 and 124,000 travellers respectively, INE said in its monthly report. The number of U.S. tourists has grown significantly in recent years as they increasingly find the southern European country cheap, sunny and safe. Tourism, a key driver of Portugal's economy, accounted for almost 15% of gross domestic product before the pandemic.
