Gen Z is struggling to find love amid various dating challenges, and it's largely because dating apps have made them too picky, according to one relationship therapist. Gen Z generally refers to the generation born between 1997 and 2012. "When we're on dating apps, the way that we can filter people is not conducive to actually finding someone who's a really good match." "Dating apps have forced us to prioritize things that don't actually matter in relationships," Guenther explained. The illusion of choice on dating apps means Gen Z is rejecting people over inconsequential details.

Tracking a Single Day at the National Domestic Violence Hotline They call from work, to avoid being overheard, or from home before someone returns. The legal battles have underscored the pervasiveness of domestic violence and the strains on existing support for survivors. To capture a snapshot of the experiences of domestic violence survivors, The New York Times observed some of the calls and messages the hotline received in one day. Congress approved creation of a national hotline dedicated to domestic violence in 1994, including it in the landmark Violence Against Women Act. Josie Slawik, who began working to support domestic violence survivors after she arrived at an El Paso shelter, was there when the hotline took its first call in 1996.

Under Armour on Friday said it has agreed to pay $434 million to settle a 2017 class action lawsuit accusing the sports apparel maker of defrauding shareholders about its revenue growth in order to meet Wall Street forecasts. The shareholder lawsuit accused the apparel maker and CEO Kevin Plank of intentionally misleading them about the company’s financial health. In 2021, the Baltimore-based company had agreed to pay $9 million to settle Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) charges that it misled investors about its revenue growth. Under Armour said it intends to pay the settlement amount of $434 million through cash on hand as well as by drawing on its $1.1 billion revolving credit facility. The company expects its total accrual in legal proceeding contingencies related to the lawsuit to reach $434 million during the first quarter of fiscal year 2025, from $100 million at the end of fiscal 2024.

She started researching and found numerous articles preaching the advantages of freezing eggs before age 35 for higher viability in the future. For the first time, egg freezing was an option for younger women worried about their reproductive future. But that also comes with a cost — and Carney doesn't plan to do another round. Other studies have found that there isn't much added benefit to freezing eggs earlier than 30. Fertility clinics have an obvious business case for trying to convince as many people as possible that egg freezing is something they should do.

6 types of depression identified in Stanford study
  + stars: | 2024-06-20 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +11 min
Some 30% to 40% of people with depression do not experience symptom improvement after trying one treatment, according to the study. And about 30% of people diagnosed with depression go on to experience treatment-resistant depression when the disorder doesn’t improve after multiple treatment attempts. Mapping depression in the brainThe authors used data from 801 adult participants who were previously diagnosed with depression or anxiety, and 137 healthy control group participants. The grant supports a five-year project involving 4,500 participants, which is centered on the development of a better diagnosis and treatment tool for depression biotypes. This method isn’t intended to replace or be the primary choice for assessments of individual cases of depression, Williams said.

Now people are taking full-blown holidays while on the job as part of a trend that's been called "quiet vacationing." It's a stark reminder of how broken American work culture is, just in time for summer. Pretending to work when you're not or acting like you're putting in more hours than you do is not a new phenomenon. If you're quiet vacationing and your boss doesn't know, good for you, I guess. Israel-Hamas war: Why Hezbollah is threatening Cyprus
  + stars: | 2024-06-20 | by ( Nadeen Ebrahim | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
While experts say war between Israel and Hezbollah remains unlikely, the very mention of Cyprus adds a new dimension to the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza. Stavros Ioannides/PIO/ReutersWhat has Cyprus’ role been in the Gaza war? Cyprus has been keen to dispel any suggestions that it is implicated in the Gaza war, noting its humanitarian efforts that helped bring some aid into Gaza. It would mean that an EU country is, for the first time, directly involved in an expanded Gaza war. “The US also does not want to find itself in another Middle East quagmire, especially with presidential elections looming.”

An island in the Eastern Mediterranean located on a geopolitical fault line between the Middle East and southern Europe, Cyprus is geographically much closer to the conflicts in the Middle East than it is to European power centers. The island has previously been caught in the crossfire of regional conflicts, a reminder of its proximity to the volatile Middle East. It would mean that an EU country is, for the first time, directly involved in an expanded Gaza war. “It is normal for both Israel and Hezbollah to have military plans in place for handling a potential escalation. “The US also does not want to find itself in another Middle East quagmire, especially with presidential elections looming.”

Nearly all Amazon deliveries in North America no longer include plastic air pillows, the e-commerce giant said on TK [date] Thursday . Amazon said the change will avoid some 15 billion air pillows — the company's largest reduction in plastic packaging to date. Plastic air pillows are made with a film that's commonly found littering marine areas. It's enough to circle the Earth more than 200 times in the form of air pillows, Oceana said. Amazon's plastic packaging data reflects orders shipped through its own fulfillment centers — which some independent sellers opt for — and through its grocery business.

New York CNN —The OpenAI co-founder who left the high-flying artificial intelligence startup last month has announced his next venture: a company dedicated to building safe, powerful artificial intelligence that could become a rival to his old employer. Ilya Sutskever announced plans for the new company, aptly named Safe Superintelligence Inc., in a post on X Wednesday. Sutskever then worked on Google’s AI research team, before helping to found what would become the maker of ChatGPT. It’s also not clear exactly what the new company thinks of as “safety” in the context of highly powerful artificial intelligence technology. “By safe, we mean safe like nuclear safety as opposed to safe as in ‘trust and safety,’” Sutskever told Bloomberg in an interview published Tuesday.

In the contest of global narratives, China has sought to cast itself as a peaceful nation opposed to dividing the world into rival camps. In contrast, it has accused the United States of building alliances that will drive the world toward a new Cold War. Yet Russia and North Korea’s mutual defense treaty, which calls for the two countries to provide immediate military assistance to each other in the event of war, is exactly the kind of bloc-building that China has charged the United States with. China’s closest strategic partner and its only treaty ally — Russia and North Korea — are now the ones heightening the risk of Cold War-style confrontation in northeast Asia. The pact also creates more headaches for Beijing by appearing to deepen the semblance of a trilateral axis between China, Russia and North Korea, which China has sought to avoid.
