Oct 11 (Reuters) - Canadian toys and games-maker Spin Master (TOY.TO) said on Wednesday that it has agreed to buy U.S.-based toy-maker Melissa & Doug for $950 million in cash, taking the shares of the Rubik's Cube owner up nearly 8% in early trade. The move comes days after Spin Master signed a deal with the retailing and licensing division of Paramount Global (PARA.O) for a new animated series in the well-known Dora the Explorer franchise. Spin Master said it expects the Melissa deal, which includes $500 million in debt financing, to be immediately accretive to its earnings per share. Melissa & Doug makes toys for children in the preschool ages, and is known for its wooden jigsaw puzzles. Spin Master, which also owns the popular children's cartoon adventure series PAW Patrol, has a market capitalization of C$3.50 billion ($2.57 billion) as of stock's last close.

Deforestation and fires usually spike in the Amazon in August and September, when the weather turns drier. Production of the chocolate-making ingredient is expanding outside of the main growing area in West Africa as farmers in places such Brazil, Ecuador and Colombia see potential profit in the crop. The rally in prices to the highest level in nearly 50 years is boosting that trend, which could alleviate the current supply tightness in the global cocoa market. The country was once the second only to Ivory Coast in cocoa production, but a devastating fungus in the 1980's known as Witches' Broom sharply reduced production. "I believe that the new profile of cocoa production will be large-scale," said Moises Schmidt, one of the owners. CNN —Russian para-athletes will be permitted to compete under a neutral flag at next year’s Paris 2024 Games after the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) voted against a full suspension of Russia’s National Paralympic Committee (NPC) on Friday. “IPC members voted 90-56 in favour of a motion to partially suspend NPC Russia (with six members abstaining),” the IPC said in a statement. A full suspension would have meant no Russian para-athletes could compete at the Paris Games. NPC Russia is also not allowed to organise any sport event/competition involving other IPC members,” the statement added. CNN reached out to the Ukrainian and Russian Paralympic Committees for comment on the decision but did not immediately receive a response.

"We can think of Earth as a human body, and the planetary boundaries as blood pressure. Over 120/80 does not indicate a certain heart attack but it does raise the risk," Richardson said. "It is a complete failure ...and it's a large risk... We're still following a pathway that takes us unequivocally to disaster."
