Andrade and MacNeil take Pan Am Games spotlight
  + stars: | 2023-10-25 | by ( Steve Keating | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
With marquee names in short supply, Olympic champions MacNeil and Andrade commanded the Pan Am stage, the Canadian tying American Gabi Albiero for first in women's 50 metre freestyle while Andrade soared to the top of the podium in the vault. Simone Biles aside, Andrade might just be the most intriguing athlete competing in her sport in Santiago. Biles may be recognised as the greatest gymnast of all-time but Andrade is the queen of the vault, holding the Olympic, world championship and now Pan Am Games crowns on the apparatus. MacNeil's fourth win in Santiago tied the record for most gold by a Canadian swimmer at a Pan Am Games while her six total medals (four gold, a silver and bronze) also equalled a single Games national mark. Chile enjoyed their best day of the Panamerican Games scooping up three gold to push their total to five while Argentina's struggles continued.

The Americans finished with a bang, picking up five medals including gold in the women's 1,500m freestyle and the men's 4x100m medley relay. "We cast a huge net the year before the Olympic trials and Olympic Games trying to make sure we give a lot of people opportunity to get international experience which only sets us up to be better in 2024. The Pan Am pool was not without a few big fish. Olympic butterfly champion Maggie MacNeil was the swimmer in the spotlight, claiming five gold medals (100 butterfly, 100 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 4x100 freestyle relay, 4x100 medley relay), the most by a Canadian athlete at a single Pan Am Games. Her total medal haul of seven (five gold, a silver and bronze) is also a single Games high for a Canadian swimmer.

Brazil's Flavia Saraiva took silver on 54.565, with Jordan Chiles making it two Americans on the podium taking bronze. "Honestly any event whether it is international or our own home meets it prepares us for bigger events, especially knowing 2024 is coming up. "The biggest one we are all going for is Paris, so we'll see what happens." While all-time great Biles sat out the Pan Ams, Andrade the all-round silver medallists at the Tokyo Olympics, was expected to lead the Brazilian fight against the Americans for the all-around title. SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — The opening ceremony of Chile's first Pan American Games on Friday was not only a celebration of athletes, Indigenous peoples and poetry, but laid bare the politically divided country's scars from the military dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet from 1973 until 1990. In the most awaited moment of the two-hour event, the Pan American flame came through “the tunnel of memory” and into the National Stadium in Santiago that was a center of torture and executions after the coup d'etat five decades ago. SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Television crews at the Pan American Games had equipment stolen this week from the compound of Estadio Nacional, the site of Friday's opening ceremony, heightening concerns about crime at the tournament hosting over 6,800 athletes. A contractor, and not local police, was in charge of security at the Estadio Nacional compound when the incident took place. The Pan American Games, the largest multisport event in the Americas, are held one year before the Olympics. Police presence at Estadio Nacional was greater Thursday than at the beginning of the week. Organizers of the Pan American Games had previously told The Associated Press they had increased their attention in check points at the gates of every sporting venue.

REUTERS/Shamil Zhumatov/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 22 (Reuters) - The Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) will face more sanctions for failing to address non-compliance issues, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said on Friday. Following executive committee meetings in Shanghai, WADA said it also found the Pan American Sport Organisation (Panam Sports) and the South Africa and Bermuda Anti-Doping Agencies in non-compliance with the WADA code. Both South Africa and Bermuda's non-compliance is due to a failure to appropriately implement the WADA Code into their legal systems. South Africa could be under a particularly tight deadline when it comes to the Rugby World Cup.

"I would guess that the Chinese government views Ambassador Emanuel's remarks as authoritative and deliberate signaling. I doubt that's the case," said Bonnie Glaser, a China expert at the German Marshall Fund of the United States. Jim Abbott: The night of that no-hitter

Abbott was about to pull off a no-hitter, one of the rarest feats in Major League Baseball. Berry suspended for second time for anti-doping violation

Aug 2 (Reuters) - American hammer thrower Gwendolyn Berry, a two-time Olympian and a Pan Am Games gold medallist, has been given a 16-month suspension after testing positive for a banned substance, the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) said on Wednesday. It is the second doping ban within a 10-year period for Berry, who was a member of the 2016 and 2020 U.S. Olympic teams. Berry’s violation resulted from her use of a topical medication containing the diuretic and masking agent spironolactone for which she had a prescription. However, Berry failed to obtain a Therapeutic Use Exemption for the medication. Berry's 16-month ban was backdated to April 28, the date her provisional suspension was imposed, ruling her out of this month's world athletics championships in Budapest.

With only a small fraction of the S & P 500 left to report quarterly earnings, investors are now turning their focus to another major hurdle for the markets and economy: the debt ceiling crisis. Earlier this week, we looked back to debt limit crisis of 2011 for potential lessons. The protracted fight ultimately ended in an agreement in early August of that year, but it was a choppy summertime ride for investors. Within the portfolio, Wynn Resorts will report Tuesday, after the closing bell, and Disney will report on Wednesday, after the closing bell. Estee Lauder (EL) and Emerson Electric (EMR) reported earnings before the opening bell.
Pan Am was an icon of early travel that no longer exists, and even Hooters had its own airline. Meanwhile, the Concorde was an engineering marvel that wowed passengers, but it no longer flies. Did you know that the restaurant chain Hooters once had its own airline, where the wait staff got a chance to work at 32,000 feet? Getting a new airline off the ground can be the easy part, but many struggle to stay above the competition. America's premier airline boasted the first ever scheduled international flight and became an icon of early air travel.
Former Attorney General Bill Barr will help to lead a new group formed by a business lobbying organization that aims to be an alternative to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the massive advocacy group that has fallen out of favor with some Republicans. Barr will be chair of an advisory board for a project called the Center for Legal Action, he told CNBC in an interview. The group is part of the American Free Enterprise Chamber of Commerce, the business lobbying group that launched last year as a possible rival to the chamber. The business lobbying behemoth moved away from predominantly supporting Republicans in recent years after former president Donald Trump embraced trade protectionism, bashed certain companies for their social stances and tried to overturn the 2020 election. The new group aims aims to challenge — at times in court — regulations put in place by the Biden administration.
"It's the airplane that redefined the industry and redefined air travel," said Guy Norris, co-author of "Boeing 747: Design and Development Since 1969." British billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson, who was inspired to start an airline with a single Boeing 747 after getting stuck on a delayed flight, earlier on Tuesday called it a "wonderful beast" as he bid farewell. When Boeing confirmed in July 2020 that it would end 747 production, it was already only producing at a rate of half an aircraft a month. Smith said all 747 program workers were transferred to other jobs or voluntarily retired. Boeing will remain tied to the 747 through the aftermarket business and the Air Force One replacement program, which Boeing won in 2018.
Richard Branson described the 747 as a "wonderful beast" as Boeing stopped production of the jets. Branson told Reuters the 747's daily fuel costs across the Atlantic became too expensive. Thousands of people gathered on Tuesday to celebrate Boeing delivering its final 747. "So farewell to a wonderful beast," Branson told Reuters. Insider attended the UK's first orbital space launch carried out by Virgin Orbit at Spaceport Cornwall.
[1/10] A Boeing E-4B "Doomsday Plane" military aircraft takes off at Joint Base Andrews, in Maryland, U.S., May 11, 2022. But it was in the seemingly endless rows at the back of the new jumbo that the 747 transformed travel. "This was THE airplane that introduced flying for the middle class in the U.S.," said Air France-KLM CEO Ben Smith. "Prior to the 747 your average family couldn't fly from the U.S. to Europe affordably," Smith told Reuters. Now, two previously delivered 747s are being fitted to replace U.S. presidential jets known globally as Air Force One.
The day after the bombing, then-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher visited Lockerbie to meet with residents impacted by the tragedy. "The damage to this town is worse in daylight than we could possibly have seen at night," Thatcher said at the time. "The destruction of the houses near the road and the crater and the amount of metal and debris all around, and the many houses that must have been affected is far worse than I thought, and one had no idea until one came here." Ashton also questioned how Mas’ud came to be in custody in the U.S. — something that remains unclear. Late last month, local Libyan media reported that Mas’ud had been kidnapped by armed men from his residence in Tripoli, the capital. He was convicted of 270 counts of murder, was given a life sentence and was the only person convicted for their involvement in Lockerbie. The release was met with scenes of jubilation in Libya, where al-Megrahi was greeted by thousands of well-wishers in the capital, Tripoli. He is among the victims’ family members who question the evidence used to convict al-Megrahi in 2001.
